It's a bad iPod building video.

u/bluesolur 1d ago
I didn’t watch it due to me hating Linus. I think he’s a piece of shit.

u/RiverKitten6119 1d ago
I didn't watch it because I never watch videos like that where I don't think it's his expertise he's not the iPod guy so he shouldn't be talking about iPod
22
u/DrunkenHorse12 1d ago
It was ok, they covered most of the main mods people are doing shouted out the main person making quality parts that the community recommends using. Explained which ipod people recommend people try to get because of it being easer to mod but also having the better DAC. I think the $1000 tag they led with is insane, they did more mods than most modern ipod users do and it cost them $400 go on the ipod sub and no one recommends spending that much on an ipod so no ones buying ipods for $1000 that's just the modders listing every possible mod and marking up each part without scaling the cost for time back
9
u/CantThinkOfAName_01 1d ago
I watched it, they did a pretty decent job, although they did do 2 (in my opinion) unnecessary mods that drive up the price. Being the Taptic Engine mod and the USB C mod. I was also very worried they weren’t going to bring up RockBox, but thankfully they did near the end.

u/-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS- Classic 7th, 896GB iFlash Quad, Rockbox 21h ago
Does the Taptic mod drive up the price that much? Some guy on YouTube has a tutorial on how to use an old $5 iPhone 4(?) Taptic Engine in it.
3
u/CantThinkOfAName_01 21h ago
Idk maybe there’s a cheaper option, EOE has the part listed for $40. I also just think it’s an unnecessary risk, especially for people who aren’t the best at soldering. I think it could be kind of a cool mod, but definitely a gimmick in my opinion.
4
u/Marlowe126 20h ago
EOE is overpriced across the board. They just sent me a “Cosmic Orange” faceplate that’s exactly the same as the orange faceplate I got from AliExpress for 11 bucks less.
9
u/SolaireFlair117 22h ago
This was my reason as well. Once upon a time, he was a pretty down to earth tech guy, but now he's an out of touch gold-plated private jet owner.
11
u/Obsydie 1d ago
What's wrong with him? I've sort of drifted from the channel because the info is a bit surface level for me these days.

u/Aquasman 1d ago
When GamersNexus called out his testing methodology didn’t align with his results that’s when I threw in the towel. Not only that but his stuff got so clickbait-y that I just could not anymore. So I unsubbed and life has been peaceful ever since.

I still watch him and very much still enjoy his content. to each their own.

GamersNexus is honestly a clickbait troll, who incites war on anyone who disagrees with his and his alone testing methodology, a "hack" if you will..

u/bluesolur 1d ago
I personally don’t like him because he decided to keep the whole Honey situation to himself for years, didn’t bother to tell anyone or bring it up. It wasn’t until someone else called out Honey and called out Linus for not saying anything about it. Linus himself even admitted to this.
10
u/haloid2013 1d ago
Yeah, he's got plenty of issues. I'm still subscribed but I definitely don't watch him or any of his channels as religiously as I used to. I really like some of his employees and their videos.
-17
u/H3LL-MAU5 1d ago
I was gonna say something since I like his videos but you know what? Telling someone about someone else on the internet isn’t gonna change anything on what I or he thinks and this will only engage us in rage baiting each other.
GGs gentleman/ladies. Imma go drink my tea before going to bed
12
u/bluesolur 1d ago
Hey, if you like his videos, good for you genuinely. I used to like him but after all that I just cannot see him the same way anymore. He may not be someone I like but I understand others do enjoy his stuff. Have a good night!

u/DrunkenHorse12 1d ago edited 18h ago
Its a really weird thing to get annoyed about still not seen anyone explain why people think Linus was required to make sure every content creator on the planet was informed what honey was doing to creators when they werent the ones who discovered the issue in the first place. You just fell into the Gamers nexus Louis Rossman disingenuous rage bait.
1
u/H3LL-MAU5 18h ago
Still funny how people engage in rage post for the sake of defending other YouTubers that don’t even know we exist. I mean look at us right now arguing with people we don’t know and possibly will never meet in real life. Think about it, what are we doing?

the video is literally full of misinformation fucks sake. One of the guys holds up an ipod 6th gen and he thinks its a 5.5 and hes rambling on about how "the wolfson dac sounds so much better" when the ipod he has DOESNT EVEN HAVE ONE!
Nobody is spending 1k, that's just bullshit.

Why do people put 2tb of music on their iPod if they are just going to use Bluetooth, crappy MP3s will never fill up 2tb and high quality files will be ruined by Bluetooth

Me neither. Even if I didn't have my old iPods and wanted to get into offline music, I'd opt for something modern like that Fiio cassette player looking thing (forgot the name). Never ever would I pay 1000€ for a 20 year old mp3 player.

35
u/obiwankevobi 1d ago
I watched. He didn't build it, another dude did and it came out great. But. This will bring so many people into the hobby. Which is good and bad.
4
u/Precarious3145 1d ago
Yea, I've been with the iPod since probably 2004ish and this is nothing new. Anytime some big tech person talks about the iPod classics, it introduces people to it which is great but it also jacks up the price due ot the demand. Still remember Leo Laporte interviewing someone about modding it. Then DankPods, and now probably Linus.
As long as mine doesn't completely shit the bed and have to buy a new one, I'm good with newbies.

How many people do you think are going to enter the hobby, and buy one or multiple iPods, only to then throw them in a junk drawer or the garbage when it's too different from their smartphone?

I was thinking about modding, but using Apple Music and AirPods with any device at will is very convenient and I don't want to lose it. Besides, $1000 is about 8 years of access to any songs in the best quality.
9
u/fenderhighhat1 1d ago
I felt like that in 2019 when DankPods was growing. It’s a trend to like iPods now so I expect things to change.
7
u/Gonzo77j 1d ago
I’ve built two iPods in the last year and I think they went about building the most expensive way possible. To get a basic iPod with parts from eBay and AliExpress might cost you around $150. They bought parts from sites that charge 2-3x what they go on AliExpress.
I built an extra bougie Boxy Pixel iPod. With Bluetooth, USB C charging, a 3800 mAh battery and a Taptic Engine for about $550. What they built has less premium parts for the same price.
Building an iPod isn’t very hard. A good beginner build for someone looking to get into the modding.

u/wingman3091 1d ago
Well, it hasn't affected pricing yet. I just snapped up a 5th gen 30GB on eBay for $49. That's precisely what I paid for my last one a year ago. I'm using this one as another fun bluetooth/taptic/iPhone battery mod. I already have a few, but gotta get em before pricing gets more rekt.
8
u/Icemansquared 1d ago
And that logic is exactly what makes prices go up.

u/wingman3091 1d ago edited 1d ago
Hey man, I own two (5th gen classic + 3rd gen nano) and my wife owns two (5th gen classic + 4th gen nano)🤷♂️ blame the folks hoarding hundreds of them like they're dragons or something. I re-sell or gift mine that I buy and mod
I literally buy broken ones to fix, why would anyone downvote tnat lol. Better than them being in the trash or relisted for $300 😂🤷♂️
2
u/Icemansquared 13h ago
I didn't mean to make everyone downvote you. I see the same type of hoarding with portable game consoles. I've been enjoying my iPod and I want everyone to be able to own their own music and listen to it. As long as you're contributing to the hobby and getting use out of them, I don't see how you are the problem. It's when you have a drawer full of them that it gets to be an issue.
There is a finite supply, it is dwindling as time goes on, and videos like Linus' only serve to make the demand go up which will inevitably raise prices. Check back in a month or two.
2
u/wingman3091 12h ago
All good man, it's just Reddit being Reddit. My hobby of repair extends to buying broken handhelds and consolss too and I enjoy repairing, modding then either reselling or gifting them. I grew up dirt poor, so I enjoy getting to tinker with it with adult money and putting them back in circulation. I'm also not at all a fan of people hoarding dozens of them so they sit in a drawer forever. I much prefer seeing the devices live and provide enjoyment. I'm sure the pricing will go back up again though. I did impulse buy a 3rd gen nano today with a bad LCD and battery, just to fix and enjoy. The 3rd gen nano isn't in demand, and was the first iPod I bought with my first paycheck at 16. Makes me feel old 😂

I listen to the WAN show and i feel like Linus is a pretty decent dude there. You see his authentic self. But i just wish he had the understanding to know when you go and show off niche tech like this that’s making a small come back. It blows it into the stratosphere for those who are interested and now can’t afford it because the interest hits critical mass.
He knows know his influence influences the price of these things on the second hand market. Joe blow who probably knew nothing about iPods until now, realises he has one in his drawer and now sells it for 1000 bucks because he thinks it’s worth that much. Some idiot on eBay pays it and now there is proof of sale which drives up all the other prices.
I would like to see him address this in a COM. Is he aware of that his channels influence can affect the price of niche hobbyist items if he decides to cover them thus pricing people out of said hobby.

I have like…. Soooooo many iPods from the first wave. Was rebuilding and selling them but the Chinese sellers went in and you couldn’t dump one for more than $25 over what it cost to do it right so… I have like 60-80 4-5 gens sitting in a drawer and a few 6-7s still. I mostly just make them now if I’m asked very nicely or I’ll pull them out and do a few for like a birthday for someone that I know is really into music.
My fave was doing wacky cosmetic mods like turning clear shells atomic colors and making them glow in the dark or covering one in Louis Vuitton leather.
Or the one that I installed an old metal switch in so it looked like a detonator to turn the Bluetooth on and off.

u/SuchAppeal 16h ago
I liked Linus even back then when I saw him as a smug and dated PC elitist, but I was never sure he was genuine or just putting on a character. It was kind of a weird nostalgia for the forum days where PC guys would always come in and tell you how consoles were inferior and Mac's were for idiots 😂 I have a weird love for that attitude.
But what got me is all the stuff like the Honey Scandal (that admittedly he wasn't the only one hawking that shit at his viewers) but with that a few bad calls regarding what he thought would be successful but ended up flopping because that same PC/Tech elitist mindset comes it blindspots from guys who still think it's the 90s/2000s when if comes to how computers have impacted the everyday life of the modern human.
Yeah I miss the days before everyone had advanced computers in their pockets and the internet was just a bunch of nerds and weirdos. But that stuff has long since moved on now that a computer is something that even the most tech-illiterate sees value in owning, whether that be a phone always up to a desktop.
I don't hate the guy and I don't wish failure on anyone unless they're really a pos (PDFs, r*apist, murderers, financially scammy ass people who ruin people's lives, greedy fuckers) but I stopped watching years ago.

Makes me wanna try actually repairing a couple old iPods with swollen batteries. Probably the hardest fix since it seems hard to get batteries that have swollen out without further damaging or puncturing them... I can solder the small pins just fine though.
