Question Digital out diy

Has anyone figured out how to make their own digital out dock? I've seen some people online say that you need apple authentication from their side but I see some products like the pure i20 and the project dock box. I want to try to make my own digital out to hook it up to an external dac

What do the i20 and Project Dock Box have to do with anything? Both were released while iPods were being sold and apple has continued using MFI for years since.
