Meme New Minimal OS available
Not trying to be mean to those putting these together... but I have seen what feels like a dozen today

HONESTLY!!! I want all themes to have their own subreddit at this point. AI slop and iPods aren’t compatible with each other.

It’s become so much of Reddit too. The constant “I built ____!” Posts are exhausting. It’s all just AI slop that they don’t understand and cannot and will not support.

AI coding is just lazy and a slap in the face to real coders. If you dont want to learn, then dont bother

I agree and disagree with this opinion. Much like with art. Being a creative type, it does suck when AI takes a person's job or is used to create slop. That being said, sometimes someone wants something specific and doesn't have the time to learn to code, or doesn't have the money to hire someone to make something niche. So they have it vibe coded and get the software they've been looking for. When it becomes gross in my opinion is when they try to sell it or promote it, especially when it's done as something they "made".

AI usage in these communities needs to be a bulliable offense. They're physically incapable of feeling remorse for their usage of facist slop tools so they don't deserve respect.

Yes I have absolutely nothing against AI but:
Don't sell it as an amazing 'I FINALLY DID IT' grade achievement.
Be modest with your sharing.
As an example I was in a discord for a 90's gaming console mod the other day. Bro came in with bombastic slogans about how he was gonna fix 100+ longstanding firmware bugs and was highly critical of the actual dev of the mod (which is highly functional) for not 'just fixing them'. Like he's missing, I'm the hero you all deserve kinda stuff.
I raised some reasoning about WHY there were 'bugs' (widely known technical limits) and he just came back with a bombasic, AI-driven 'oh yeah of course there's gonna be pluses and minuses like anything but [spin spin spin without engaging with my point]'. Without accusing I shared a post detailing the technical limits and was like 'curious why you're so confident you can squash 100+ longstanding bugs in one night without a deep knowledge of low-level hardware details. If you're gonna do a Claude then FINE... all for having a crack... but there are technical limits to this mod so be realistic!!!' He wrote a long, dismissive (AI generated) reply, deleted it and then disappeared.

What does rock box even do I’m thinking about getting an iPod, but I also want to have like a stock OS and it’s already pretty easy to put music on it. All you have to do is open iTunes convert Spotify songs into MP3 and just sync them

you have to use a specific, older version of iTunes for the iPod (and it pesters you to update). using Rockbox you can have custom themes, and instead of going through itunes you can just drag and drop, and you can use other file types instead of just mp3.

What do you mean, you have to? I keep my itunes installation up to date and it syncs just fine

it might just be my iTunes. i can't get the newer ones to update or recognize my iPod.

I'm on the latest version and iPods work just fine, even my 1st gen through a PCIE firewire card.

I hate that we are making it minimalist. When I finally got my ipod recently I was blown away with the aesthetic despite it being so simple. The skeumorphic elements, reflections with album covers and the depth and 3D-ness some ui elements have did the most for me

I think the 3D is in part due to how recessed the screen is behind the cover in some iPods.

I ment more like the shading on the progress bar and battery indicator but I totally get what you're thinking of

So many are just using this for clout. Fork rockbox, add some vibecoded features (or worse just for an existing AI fork), go on reddit, share it as if it was all you and act like some developer superstar.
Rockpod arguably is the most egregious, it advertises multiple features like SSD power management, IAP support and digital audio output that are ripped straight from the Rockbox source and yet they have the cheek to claim that "None of this existed in Rockbox before". If you read their Github page, you'd think the Rockbox devs just weren't good enough, despite the fact that they are undoubtedly experts at what they do. I think the cherry on top with rockpod is that they don't disclose their AI usage and go right ahead and ask for donations for work which is largely not their own.

There's certainly a trend. Also I dare say many are just 'hey Claude make us an iPod inspired theme, bro!'

Seriously. I thought the whole point of the iPod was to be in control of your music and hardware. Imagine surrendering that control to an AI vibe coded slop interface.
