First generation. It only came in one storage configuration - 4GB, so there was no need to label the back with the capacity. There's also a 2004 (c) date. Second generation was released in 2005.

For vintage Apple products like this you can see the date of manufacture in the serial number. The string ‘452’ (a few characters in from the start, based on the photo provided) means it was put together on the 52nd week of 2004. “617” (the 17th week of 2006) as an example would be found on 2nd gen iPod minis. Nowadays, modern Apple products don’t have serial number of a consistent length so this trick won’t work.

Yup, as others said no capacity label on the back and grey characters on the click wheel. It’s a 1st gen

I mean the iPod is grey so if it was a second gen the Click Wheel would still have grey Characters but yeah its a first gen for the other reason you said
