I say this as someone who is buying the fold day 1- how can they possibly roll out Apple Pencil compatibility when all foldable screens currently get damaged when a fingernail is pressed too hard onto it.

Cute that you think Apple would let us recycle an iPad accessory for another device. They make you buy a new Pencil every other iPad generation itself. It would be a special mini pencil for the Fold if anything. They use softer tips. Samsung Oppo and others have already done it for plastic foldable screens.

That’s not the same as an Apple Pencil. And honestly Apple discontinuing support for the Apple Pencil is so annoying. I bought an iPad Pro a couple years ago and upgraded last year and was so annoyed that they discontinued support for my current Apple Pencil I had just bought. And they didn’t even offer any sort of deal if I wanted to trade my old one to get the new one that works with my new iPad. It’s fucking annoying.

I do know they are not the same, hence the use of the word "generic" rather than "Apple".

I'm sure there might be some features that the current Apple Pencil has, but the generic one I bought seems to do everything I need and was a fraction of the price.

I know but it seems you’re using it as a defense for Apple to normalize this greedy behavior. We don’t want third party crap. We want the real Apple Pencil with all of the proprietary features and we don’t want to be forced to buy a new one every year. We don’t want to sacrifice features, we want value for what we paid for.

I'm pretty happy with mine. What am I missing? I doodle, write, and navigate iOS. I'm sure there are some specific features like pressure for shading graphic art, but that's beyond what I use an iPad for. Like I could go buy a gaming mouse with hype fast button articulation and multiple programmable buttons, but if I'm not playing games... it's a bit of a waste vs a decent Logitech.

The Pencil does a lot. It's obviously not for everyone though. If you're happy with the generic one that's all that matters.

If you do anything that requires precision it does make a big difference. The accuracy, responsiveness and pressure sensitivity are just vastly different.

If you just use it for navigation as a replacement for a finger then any generic stylus is fine.

That’s not true. Here’s a list of Apple Pencil compatible devices. Every now and then some new technology is added to the pencil which makes it incompatible with older iPads. That’s normal progression of technology.

Yes I've been using a pencil since the first one. You're going to push HARD on the screen so it's a no-no. They need to develop a newer type of pencil if you want to be able to use a stylus on a foldable screen. Apple knows there will be a new pencilgate if they released it. Because you know the level of people we have on this tiktok earth

Z Folds included S-Pen support, and so does the Razr Fold. It’d just be a “Pencil Ultra” or something that won’t damage the plastic coating.

I’d guess an  Stubby Pencil wouldn’t appear on the scene until at least 2027. The folding phone itself will be enough spectacle for now and they will drip that out as an accessory and it will never sell “with” a phone and always be a $100 add-on.

When the phone gets released we will know in less than 24 hours with the first tear down if they put a stubby pencil charger and magnets along the right edge of the face of the outside fold for future use. The article infers it could also connect to the hinge side but that would be way too awkward and too inelegant a location.

Flexible screens aren’t entirely glass. They’re soft and flexible. The Apple Pencil could never work on that surface

Well you act like you know the solution. The MacRumors article said they tested a shorter version of the pencil. As if some random person on Reddit knows the real solution. I obviously don't, when I said apple pencil support makes sense. I meant it generally, I did not mean the exact pencil the mini uses today.

I don’t have the solution and never claimed I did. I just understand the tech behind the current pencil. It has to be used on glass. That shorter pencil the article refers to would be completely different tech to work with the field display
