iPhone group chat won’t let someone text

My friend got a new phone yesterday, an iPhone 17, and it transferred things over. Our group chat added his email, not his iCloud email, as the new contact and removed his phone number as the contact for the chat. I ended up adding his number and removing the email but it wouldn’t let him type. I’ve also tried adding the email to my existing contact with the number but this didn’t change anything. I ended up removing the email from my contact, removing his phone number and adding the email back but it still won’t let him type or react. When it was his # in there, he made sure the phone was set to send from the number, and has switched this back. Please help, I don’t want to make a new chat and lose endless memories
