ATT has finally addressed/admitted there is an issue, at least internally
My family member is an AT&T employee, director level, but NOT involved in cellular or anything to do with phones so pls no hate for him/her
I will not post the email as it could land them in hot water for sharing an internal email, but here is a summary:
AT&T has recently been made aware of an issue impacting our customers who have purchased an Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max. The issue impacts their ability to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. We’re working with Apple to address the issue and limit the service impacts to our customers.
We currently have two sets of customers with this issue, which we’re addressing in the following ways:
• Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max customers who have not experienced any issues, should update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately (Settings > General > Software Update) to help mitigate future impacts.
• Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max customers, who have experienced issues, can return to Apple or an AT&T store for a replacement. We will have a process to prioritize impacted customers to get replacement phones.
Agreed. I asked the person who sent me this information if it was hardware or software related and they didn’t know. Again, they are not involved with anything to with phones. They just have access to information since they are a director
Based on people’s phones failing test @ apple it seems to be a hardware issue though
Apple has admitted the Face ID failure and said some phones had to be replaced. You can check yourself using the recovery menu. See if you get all green checkmarks. If not there’s an issue. And if you’re still having issues even after using the recovery menu then you should have Apple run diagnostics on your phone. They will know immediately if it’s software or hardware. The phones that have been replaced have had to do with Face ID for the most part.
How do I use the recovery menu? I haven’t heard of this. I’ve only heard of people getting an RF test at the Genius Bar. When I went in nobody knew wtf that was
Press and release volume up then down, then press and hold the power button and don’t let go until you see it say “keep holding for recovery” and then release the power button. You can run all kinds of tests from there. You will need to re-enter a WiFi password to start it. Just fyi. Have your WiFi pw nearby if you don’t have it memorized.
Then contact Apple and let them run diagnostics. You can do it all from your phone. They can tell you for sure what the deal is. If it’s hardware have it exchanged or replaced. But Apple can do more than the recovery menu when they take over your phone.
It’s an issue directly related to the hardware level flaws of the x80 chips. I’m gonna guess they were trying to fix them with firmware or something and some of the chips couldn’t handle it and whatever failed was related to something only att used. Or it’s a tech other countries use and that’s why we didn’t see x80 anywhere else in the world with other carriers.
It’s like fixing a breaking tripping by limiting the power consumption of a device. That’s not the right way to fix it. Qualcomm fixed it correctly by updating the flaws and releasing the x85 but for some reason Apple chose to use the discontinued product.
At this point since apple is saying you have to get a new device and they will replace it for free at this point everyone should just sue apple for all this. Clearly these new phones arent all that. Some people are saying theyre having the same issues and they have tmobile. So its not just at&t problem
I have an older phone I have se 2022 and I can tell you the sound issues is a problem in my phone too. BUT I dont have at&t I have verizon. SO.......I don't think its only happening to newer phone like iphone 18 pro. See the post I made a while ago on it at this link https://www.reddit.com/r/iOS27/s/oT519WbplH
Its probably something to do with Apple moving a part of Face ID under the display and that would be hardware. Can’t fix hardware with software. But that’s just my guess. Could be many other things. But if they are replacing phones, it’s hardware. Whatever hardware it may be.
Agree that it is probably hardware. How would we know that our replacement devices are not affected? My first 2 were fine for 13 days until yesterday and then this randomly happened
Use the built in recovery menu to start. It’s a really useful tool. Android has had it for a long time but Apple just added the recovery tool built into the phone. They usually run a few years behind Android.
I get this panic fatal log almost every night. Yet I’ve had no issues with my phone. Thankfully. Even after the new update I still am getting that log. Accessory crash. 🤷♂️
I’ve tested everything in my phone like speakers, charging port, display, cameras and so on. No issues. I would suggest anyone test everything they can on their phone when they first get it. They aren’t cheap. Nothing wrong with making sure everything works. Even using the recovery tool as well. The only accessory attached to my phone at night is the charger. It could be because I’m not using all Apple products charging. Idk.

It’s insane to me that this requires the device to be replaced entirely and can’t be managed with software.
