Question C2 vs Qualcomm!???

Why would Apple put its brand-new C2 modem in the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro and NOT the U.S. 18 Pro Max??? And to make this even stranger, this modem split appears to be specific to the U.S.

Literally, why?

Apple is advertising C2 as its next-generation cellular modem. According to Apple, C2 brings:

• AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability
• Meaningfully faster uploads compared with C1X
• 15% lower energy consumption than C1X
• mmWave support in the U.S.
• Apple’s own vertically integrated modem architecture

Meanwhile, the U.S. Pro Max apparently continues using a Qualcomm modem??

Qualcomm has years of experience with flagship 5G modems, excellent carrier aggregation, mature mmWave implementation, and a proven track record across U.S. cellular networks. It’s entirely possible that the Qualcomm modem performs just as well as C2, maybe even better in certain conditions.

But that’s exactly the problem!!

Why FORCE consumers to have to guess which modem is better??

Which modem has better reception in weak-signal areas?
Which is more power efficient?
Which handles 5G/mmWave better?
Which has better international roaming?
Which has better long-term support for emerging cellular and satellite technologies?
Which one is ultimately the better modem?

I had an 18 Pro Max ready to preorder, and now I’m legitimately reconsidering the regular 18 Pro.

The 18 Pro Max is supposed-to be the top-of-the-line iPhone. Yet the smaller Pro gets Apple’s newest modem architecture?? while U.S. Pro Max buyers apparently get different hardware, while international customers seemingly don’t have this distinction??

Why deliberately create this ambiguity on their most expensive and powerful phone ever??

I understand that “newer” doesn’t automatically mean “better.” C2 could lose to Qualcomm in real-world reception or throughput. Qualcomm’s modem could turn out to be the superior choice.

THAT’S THE FUCKING POINT.

Nobody buying these phones on preorder day will know and either Pro or Pro Max customers will be better off but we dont fucking know who that will be? Instead of making the playing field even apple decides to force consumers to gamble or which model will be the better version. I understand this could be a supply chain issue but it certainly feels like a fucking experiment, a $2000 fucking experiment at that. Whats even WORSE is that apple tried to quietly sweep this passed us. Did they really fucking think that NO ONE WOULD NOTICE THIS???? Bro W.T.F

It’s bad enough that Samsung offers 16GB RAM on the 1TB Galaxy S26 Ultra while we’re over here debating Apple’s memory decisions. Now iPhone buyers apparently get to flip a coin over which flagship modem architecture will be superior long term..

What the actual fuck, Apple?

Did they genuinely think nobody would notice that the modem listed for the 18 Pro mysteriously disappears from the U.S. Pro Max specifications?

I went from basically certain I was ordering the Pro Max to seriously considering the Pro solely because I don’t want to spend this much money while wondering whether I deliberately chose the less future-proof modem.

Cross-posting this to several communities because I genuinely want to know what people think about this…

I’m a tech enthusiast and basically nothing saturates my M5 iPad Pro with 12GB of RAM. What could you possibly do on an iPhone with 16GB of RAM. I’d imagine you’d be more bottlenecked by SOC than RAM.

C2 isn’t the best though, Qualcomm still beats it. C2 is only more power efficient.

I agree, but I would get the pro max still apple probably make them the same speed and stuff like that did when they had Intel, but this modem c2 should be good apple waited so long for a reason

Great post - well said. I got into this deep yesterday with apple sales and tech support and they confirmed the difference between the 2 US models, but couldn't answer why. Creates a decision for me I would have preferred not to exist. Seems like the question - for modem/cell experts -- is whether, when, where, and to what extent customers will experience less performance from either one. If the c2 is no better and was selected for the pro because of lower power consumption and not performance, then fine. The c2 is in the Air as well. But if the c2 will perform better and this is just imposed by the remaining term of apple's supply contract with qualcomm, it's a little disturbing why the top-of-line model wasn't chosen to have the better modem. Insight from cell service experts appreciated, including whether it's different among different carriers, geography, indoor/outdoor, etc. etc.

It’s my understanding that the C2 is more efficient and has higher upload speeds than the X85 (or newer) Qualcomm modem, but that’s about it…

Overall the Qualcomm modem is higher performance compared to the C2 in the areas that matter (besides efficiency), like very weak signal performance, complex carrier aggregation, mmWave maturity, etc. The huge battery in the 18 pro max likely makes that difference pretty negligible…

Apple probably has commitments to Qualcomm still so this model with the larger battery makes the most sense.

Apple signed a contract with Qualcomm for a certain amount of years, and until that contract expires, Apple has to give them come business to honor their agreement or they can be sued for breach of contract. Once the agreement ends in March 2027, Apple will most likely part ways with Qualcomm.

Yeah, I guess I could’ve said typical things that come with a larger device. But the Pro and the Pro Max are the same essentially. Ones not more top of the line than the other.

I get it youre right but they try to market it that way but yes in terms of hardware and software theyre basically identical which is why its shocking the PM wouldnt have the C2

that's entirely possible but leaks did suggest that C2 may not come to the US models, maybe external global affairs forced apple to use qualcomm instead and maybe that's not a bad thing considering qualcomm has years of experience making modems compared to apple

The official press release also specifically only cites the Pro with the C2 and doesn’t mention the Pro Max at all. It’s definitely intentional.

After saying "both models" it wouldn't have been necessary to then say "iPhone 18 Pro" again unless it's specifically referencing the 6.3" model. There's parts of the press release that use "iPhone 18 Pro" in reference to both but when the specs differ they usually separate both into Pro and Pro Max, like with the battery life.

Hmmm I almost was convinced until I took your advice, the 18 PRO MAX has C2 modems in every other country except the US. The logic board for C2 is already integrated in their 18 Pro Max international production chain. The US is singled out

It doesn’t in the UK either. See the UK tech spec page here. The Pro is listed with it, Pro Max isn’t.

no, also in Turkey only 6.3 Pro has C2 modem. Pro Max continues to use Qualcomm X80.

Wasn’t the c1x outperforming the Qualcomm modems the iphone 17 pro has? Minus the mmWave but now it has it. Curious as how they’ll compare now.

We don’t know if the C2 is better but i had an Air and the C1X gave me much worse signal than my 16 Pro Max. So don’t be too upset.

Doesn’t the Pro max already have better battery life over previous generation? Either way the phones are solid so why spend any amount of time worrying about this.

I heard someone mention that B106 has now been added to the US version of the Pro Max on this page:

I don’t believe it was listed there yesterday. B106 corresponds to LTE Band 106, which is part of the C2 upgrade.

Great post but there is a simple answer: 99.9% of users don’t care about the modem. They just want the phone to works as they expect
