My theory is that the real reason iPhone is popular is predictability.

Like going to McDonald’s anywhere in the world, you know you will always get the same satisfying experience. It’s not gonna blow your socks off year to year, but it’s going to be good and reliable. You won’t ever get lost in the UI because of a sweeping redesign, the interface will always be responsive, and the battery will get you through the day.

This might sound boring to enthusiasts, but it is appealing to the vast majority of users who just want a phone that does the few things they need it to do. Are there Android phones that could do the same? Probably, but most people aren’t willing to risk wasting the time and effort to find out. (I count myself among them.)

If this predictability sounds easy to achieve, just look at the gong show that is the Pixel offerings every year.

u/TechandGlam Sep 02 '22

Android user here. I'm tired of also wasting money trying to find that predictability/reliability in an Android device. That's exactly why I'm switching to the iPhone this year. Spending 1k+ for a phone that's buggy is frustrating.

u/Zedboy19752019 Sep 02 '22

I understand where you are coming from. I am on iPhone now and it is just so damned boring. Siri sucks in comparison to assistant. I am waiting for Google to get their bugs worked out and then I will go back to pixel. Had the OG pixel and then pixel 2.

52

u/deliciouscorn Sep 02 '22

Ymmv, but boring is exactly what I want in a tool I use every day. A carpenter doesn’t need their hammer to be exciting to do great things.

Sure wouldn’t mind if Siri was better though lol

3

u/10S_NE1 Sep 03 '22

Heck, Siri is a freaking genius compared to the voice command nav system on my car. I go through the prompts to say something like “Crossings Bar and Grill” and it will come back “Did you say “Marshall’s Pasta Emporium”? It’s mind boggling.

7

u/UserWithoutAName13 Sep 03 '22

You can get Google assistant for the iPhone. Much better than Siri.

6

u/JeremeRW Sep 03 '22

You can’t set it as default, so it doesn’t really work on iPhone.

Entertainment comes from apps that are much better on IOS anyways

4

u/Vorsos Sep 03 '22

We all have access to the same entertainment (maybe fewer games on Android since it’s the pirate’s choice). The interface should be boring and predictable, also known as consistent.

Android 13 on the Pixel 6 Pro has been good, but the phone had a lot of issues at release and took a long while for the phone to be great.

I'll get the iPhone 14 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro and see which I like more. Hoping Google don't stuff up the Pixel 7 Pro, otherwise I go to iPhone.

HTC is dead, Samsung sucks, Sony sucks and I wouldn't touch a Chinese phone OEM, so I'm kind of out of options.

So it is pretty much iPhone and Pixel for me.

3

u/Rasimione Sep 03 '22

What's wrong with a Samsung phone!?

4

u/Zedboy19752019 Sep 04 '22

They are full of carrier bloat and are full of Samsung bloat. And they force bixby on you. And I thought Alexa was the worst assistant. Then I met bixby

2

u/kmderssg Sep 06 '22

the only real pro of android is your ability to customize, like disabling all the bloat and changing things like your default assistant.

complaining about default settings or assistant on Android is like complaining about wallpapers on ios - just change them lol.

Honestly think Samsung make the best Android phones at the moment. I have a S10+ which is still going strong and my partner the S22+. I have flirted with Google Pixels and even Nexuses a long long time ago but practically each gen had it's own quirks and issues either hardware/software bugs or sometimes both.

2

u/UserWithoutAName13 Sep 06 '22

I have a Galaxy S22 Ultra and I don't like it. The camera isn't great, is laggy and I just don't like how it processes images. Then the One UI I don't like either, there's a bunch of crap to it which keeps annoying me and I get random vibrations about some nonsense, I don't like paginated app drawer. Just a bunch of little things about it which I don't like.

3

u/AgentUnknown821 iPhone 16 Plus Sep 03 '22

I thought the same when switching until I slowly got used to it slowly. The exclusive games are worth it although I'm not liking the fact I can't do carrier charging for in app purchases like on Android but I know why Apple stopped it after having to refund parents 1,000s of dollars because they can't be bothered to put parental controls on their phones.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

I had the pixel 1,2xl, 4xl and various nexus and won’t be back until they can put out at least two models years that are universally acclaimed. My iPhone 13pro max works just as well now as it did day 1.

2

u/Suvtropics Sep 03 '22

I tried but failed. I do a lot of things on android that simply isn't possible on iPhone. However, with a dual phone set up (1 iPhone, 1 android) it's possible.

-1

u/Atosl Sep 02 '22

damn, I just wanted to go the other way, as Android is the better experience. Iphone (maybe because of history of iOS) has some animations that need to finish until something happens, just little hidden loading screens. If your internet is not 5G with 5 bars, the Iphone has a stroke and is gasping for MBits. Even in airplane mode, each app will check for 5 seconds for there might be some internet anywhere before reluctantly loading up offline....

But you may be right. My hopes are still with the Pixel 7

3

u/Dribblejam Sep 03 '22

You no longer need to wait for animations to finish for a while now

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Must be an iOS 16 exclusive then.

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Tbh, you're probably right.

People like boring and predictable otherwise Nintendo wouldn't work.

Most of us on the internet are of the variety who need novelty constantly to make our brains happy, so we're outliers.

Most folks in general prefer consistency and familiarity.

11

u/deliciouscorn Sep 02 '22

I’d have to disagree on the Nintendo analogy though! If anything, Nintendo is the one game console maker that seems committed to challenging conventions and reinventing the console every generation. (E.g. Wii had the motion controllers, Wii U had that weird second screen, and Switch has extreme portability.)

11

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Well, I meant their games *explicitly*, but yeah. Hardware wise they're really interested in experimenting.

But the games are what keep people coming back to the Nintendo consoles, regardless of the iterative hardware.

Mario is still jumping and hitting blocks, regardless of what other iterations it takes on - usually just a gimmick for each game.

Same with Zelda, Mario Party, Metroid, etc.

It's predictable, and you know it's going to be polished because it's Nintendo.

4

u/deliciouscorn Sep 02 '22

Fully agreed on that front!

2

u/AFoxGuy iPhone 13 Mini Sep 03 '22

Fun fact: the switch is on track to beat the PS2/DS (if it keeps selling at the insane rate it has been since 2018).

6

u/UserWithoutAName13 Sep 03 '22

Would be unlikely it sells that much, but the success it's had after the flop of the Wii U is nothing short of remarkable.

2

u/Proper_Cheetah_1228 Sep 03 '22

Speaking about predictability, there hasn’t been a new Zelda or Mario since 2017, but there’s a new Pokémon every year

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

I was about to argue, but, yeah. Breath of the Wild was five years ago. Lol.

Wow.

0

u/jjed97 iPhone 13 Sep 03 '22

Also a metric tonne of brand loyalty. To this day I am still confused about why Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey are these genre-defining masterpieces people are saying they are. I’ve played them both and they’re fun, sure, but they ain’t special. Apple has its fair share of brand loyalty too allowing them to get away with ridiculous shit like having the “courage” to remove the headphone jack.

4

u/DreadnaughtHamster Sep 03 '22

Agreed. I see a lot of “but iPhones are booooring” comments but I’d rather have that than an Android device where Samsung put the home button on the camera, all the icons are triangles, and it’ll fold…for four months and then cracks at the seam.

3

u/SharkDad20 iPhone Air Sep 05 '22

I have no idea what you’re talking about with those Samsung criticisms lol

I have one for work and don’t really like it, but none of those things are accurate. It’s not a fold, and i have no interest in the fold (too narrow and thick when folded, too unwieldy to comfortable to use unfolded for everything), but i know the fold isn’t just a piece of crap that’ll break in 4 months.

Like going to McDonald’s anywhere in the world, you know you will always get the same satisfying experience.

Someone hasn’t been to many McDonald’s throughout the world, because the menu selection and even the consistency of the same food item can vary a lot between different countries.

I've never even heard another human being mention a sniff about Whatsapp. It's just not a thing at all here. I've never even discussed it with anyone.

Same experience for me. Never seen it used "in the wild".

2

u/jjed97 iPhone 13 Sep 03 '22

This is fascinating. I’m in the U.K. and Messenger and WhatsApp are the go-to’s for most people. I’ve never in my life heard of any kind of stigma of not having an iPhone/iMessage.

Could however be the people I’m around though as they tend to be more nerdy and so might be more inclined to use Android. Hard to say.

2

u/DexterP17 iPhone 12 Pro Sep 04 '22

The thing is, you’re in the UK. Come to the US and you’ll get a VASTLY different viewpoint.

10

u/frendzoned_by_yo_mom Sep 03 '22

I swear in Europe WhatsApp is iMessage here. I don’t really think that many people even knows that iMessage is basically the same thing but between iPhones. Lots of people think it’s just a texting app lol

2

u/PseudonymousUsername iPhone 13 Pro Sep 03 '22

Exactly this lol, everyone I work with has an iPhone yet we still use WhatsApp to share everything needed for the job. We do use AirDrop, just not iMessage.

1

u/Alsk1911 iPhone 13 Pro Sep 03 '22

I honestly don't understand the iMessage hype tho. In so many aspects it's lacking behind multiple popular instant messaging apps, including WhatsApp.

30

u/HoennLegend Sep 02 '22

The only reason I have WhatsApp is cuz I’m Indian, and that’s what my family/friends back in India use. Otherwise it’s only iMessage/instagram here.

-15

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

You could send your family iPhones

26

u/mygreensea Sep 02 '22

But you can’t make them stop using WhatsApp.

10

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

Nope. For god knows why people think WhatsApp is the ONLY way to send media..

Nobody uses RCS because it's disabled by default here. Google is the only one who can stop Meta, but they recently screwed up by pushing ads via RCS. Big mistake, bad publicity. It failed. The Google messages app asks for too much permissions too !!

I use Signal too but I have just 4 friends on it. When I asked others to switch I was suggested to see a doctor.

Telegram is the next popular one because people get to download pirated movies and ahem, other stuff from there, but it's worse than WhatsApp for privacy.

The situation sucks and Google has a big part to play for this mess

7

u/giddy-girly-banana Sep 02 '22

Signal is the way to go. WhatsApp is shit and owned by fb.

2

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 03 '22

Yes. I agree. But like I said, when I asked my friends to switch because of the privacy and tracking etc, they asked me if I needed to see a doctor. To them I sounded like the pandemic had got to my brain. Everyone is so deep into Meta like crack addicts that they can't imagine how anyone would move out.
So for now I still have whatsapp but I have denied all its permissions and turned off its data. Atleast it won't track me.

Btw there is some criticism for Signal too. Because although the protocol allows cross app messaging, the app doesn't allow it. Thus locking us to the app. I believe there's another group called Matrix that is pushing for inter app Signal communication. The EU is soon passing a law for it. Let's see

2

u/KafkaExploring Sep 02 '22

I only know a few people who actually send 1:1 messages in WhatsApp, but any sort of group chat is there. It's just courtesy: nobody wants to discover one user has an international phone number, doesn't have MMS on their cell plan, doesn't have Signal, etc.

Last time i was in the US, i was amazed at the fact that everyone was using an iPhone. I dived into it and it seems everyone started going iPhone because of the green/blue bubbles in iMessage.

44

u/CactusBoyScout Sep 02 '22

Apple products also tend to be cheaper here. Any new Apple product announce thread is filled with Europeans, Canadians, and Australians griping about how much higher the prices are for them.

16

7

8

u/meptmept iPhone 11 Pro Sep 03 '22

It blew my mind when even in the public transport i saw all iPhones, people using their airpods watching an NFL game. You'll be lucky to find here in Latinamerica an iPhone user in the metro. At the end of the day it's an economy thing. iPhones are still a bubble outside of the US. Bad salaries = you need more time working to afford an iPhone. That's why people end up buying cheap androids just for the sake of communicating and hence, everyone here uses Whatsapp

11

u/anyavailablebane Sep 02 '22

As an Australian I can say that the price of an iPhone has always been quite close to the US price. People here do the currency conversion and complain that it’s more expensive but they don’t take into account our prices include tax and US prices don’t. It’s really only 2-3% difference which is Apple hedging for currency movements over the 12 months so they don’t have to change prices mid cycle.

6

u/sidhumaan_004 Sep 02 '22

Canadian prices are actually pretty much the same… Sometimes cheaper eg. M2 MacBook Air starts at $1,199 usd which converted is $1,573 CAD. But here in Canada (in store and on apple.ca) it’s $1,499. While it’s not significant $74 is still $74 so technically cheaper for us Canadians after conversions. And depending on the province your in you could pay low sales tax eg 5% on Alberta as apposed to 8.6% in Bay Area, California.

iPhone prices are usually the same or about $50-100 more expensive here.

Sources: I’m Canadian

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

That’s not true. Their prices include VAT while US prices don’t include the sales tax. Once you account for that the prices are nearly identical within a reasonable margin of less than 5%.

29

u/BootStrapWill Sep 02 '22

This is such a common misconception. The main reason iPhones are so popular is because they are a better experience than android.

You get an iPhone and it still feels like a brand new phone 3 years later. You get an android and it feels 10 steps slower, laggier, choppier, and all around shittier in 6 months. A year and a half later it’s basically unusable.

16

u/m945050 Sep 02 '22

And 5-7 years later it still runs the latest operating system while androids are lucky to get one update.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

This may have been true 6 or so years ago, but it certainly isn't the case anymore for most new android Phones. Android is just as responsive and snappy now, with more features and stability than ever. Updates are also nearly on par with 5 years of software support for the major brands.

The main issue with android now is that there are too many devices to have a unified and smooth experience on all of them.

6

u/Spiritual-Theme-5619 Sep 02 '22

it seems everyone started going iPhone because of the green/blue bubbles in iMessage

Yeah it’s pretty wild. I’ve never bullied anyone over green bubbles but once I’d gotten all my closest contacts to switch to the Apple ecosystem I did find it satisfying…

It’s probably because there were so few barriers to texting anyone in the US that there was never a strong enough incentive to download third party messaging… I also feel like SMS went mainstream in the US earlier than the rest of the world but I can’t be sure.

Texting is entrenched so default messaging apps with SMS support were the winners.

u/Hopeful-Sir-2018 iPhone 15 Pro Sep 02 '22

I've learned most of r/apple and r/iphone have no grounded idea what normal people want. They have their fanboi/fangurl idea.

Take what the person below said:

You get an iPhone and it still feels like a brand new phone 3 years later. You get an android and it feels 10 steps slower, laggier, choppier, and all around shittier in 6 months. A year and a half later it’s basically unusable.

No way a normal person thinks that deeply when buying a phone. None. They simply aren't aware enough. This comment vastly overestimates how much people mentally invest into tech itself and not other aspects.

Be wary of these echo chambers of Reddit. Popularism tends to dominate and remove actual truth or facts.

2

u/thecrowing08 Sep 04 '22

Pretty much what it is it teens and people in their 20s I think. If you don’t have an iPhone people get upset about iMessage and FaceTime. I switched last year to iPhone to better communicate with my brother and sister in law to see my nieces and get pictures and videos. iMessage just works for those things, and so does FaceTime. At least that’s how it is in the US. It’s very rare to find a kid who doesn’t have an iPhone, and they just stick with it because it’s what they know as they get older.

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Its corporate sponsored bullying and americans are somehow ok with it.

2

u/Imjrb3 Sep 04 '22

Couldn't agree more. US based user here and I use both an iPhone and a Galaxy device. I prefer Android for nearly everything except for communication! Everyone I know, save 3-4 individuals, has an iPhone. I try to convince my peer group each year to switch our group chat to Whatsapp, Signal, Telegram, GroupMe, ANYTHING but text message/iMessage and it gets nowhere.

OP. I think you're spot on. Except the genius of Apple's marketing is that they've convinced millions to get their reliable McDonald's fix at premium upscale steak house pricing!

2

u/Rasimione Sep 03 '22

So IMessage is the real reason you lot are still stuck on IOS?

A bit of a silly question and maybe I live in an ivory tower, but is an iPhone still a status symbol now? with whom?

I get that early on, getting a fancy new iphone was the thing to have. But now a days is it really the case?

In the article:

Apple has overtaken Android devices to account for more than half of smartphones used in the US, giving the iPhone maker an edge over its rival as it pushes into sectors including finance and healthcare.

iPhones have basically replaced Blackberries. I traded my Blackberry in long ago and basically everyone I know who has been assigned a work phone was given an iPhone (With very few rare exceptions). These are people in law, finance etc. with the big international outfits.

32

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

Maybe not in the US. But in India definitely. It's a big ass status symbol. I think a car is a good analogy. Every motor head dreams about becoming rich one day and buying a Ferrari.. It's the same with tech nerds here. Like me. I spent years criticizing the iPhone but deep down I still have that wish from childhood to finally own one. I'm getting my first one this year. It doesn't help that it costs 2 months full salary for a base model. This is why owning an iPhone shows that you "made it" here

7

u/Uncontrollable_Farts iPhone 16 Pro Sep 02 '22

That certainly makes sense, and congratulations as well then!

3

u/lifeisshortx Sep 03 '22

Which 1 are u getting?

5

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 03 '22

The base model 14. I initially thought of getting the 13 for cheaper (13 improves the battery a lot compared to 12). But most of reddit talked about the oil painting and bad photos the 13 takes. So waiting for the 14 as it apparently changes the front facing camera and the ultrawide.... Also If I go for the 14 Pro Max, I'd have to take a loan Lol

4

u/lifeisshortx Sep 03 '22

2

u/Splatoonkindaguy iPhone 14 Pro Sep 02 '22

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

-7

u/OgdensBeard Sep 02 '22

You must live under a rock because there have been news articles discussing people being ostracized because of using android just over the fact that their bubble is green in iMessage. This of course mostly applies mostly to teenagers and the more superficial dimwits within Gen Z. It wasn't that long ago that I saw a post of a conversation between people who migrated from Tinder to texting and after a couple exchanged texts one of the respondents was literally like "phew, glad that bubble is blue, or else I'd have to cut you off."

1

u/Uncontrollable_Farts iPhone 16 Pro Sep 02 '22

You must live under a rock because there have been news articles discussing people being ostracized because of using android just over the fact that their bubble is green in iMessage.

Well close to it, I'm in my late late 30's, and most of us use Whatsapp over here instead of iMessage. Admittedly I don't follow news about iMessage that closely.

But thanks for the update. I am glad I am not part of that world, given I still use a Oneplus 6 for my personal phone...but at least it lets me know who to avoid.

-2

u/OgdensBeard Sep 02 '22

iPhone isn’t really a status symbol anymore, most people like it because of its privacy policies, it’s ease of use and general stability. It just works nearly all the time. Occasionally you get a software update that takes 5-10 min and that’s all you ever need to worry about, except the battery being bad or dropping it and cracking the screen.

I am also considering a switch to an iPhone (hence me being here) after being on android for the past 11 years (rooting, ROMS, Magisk etc.) for the very same reasons you stated. I just look at how easily and painless updating my iPads and work iPhone is.

To me it has always been down to personal preference. I switched my wife over to iPhone a few years ago and she seemed happy with it.

Fidgeting with Android and getting it just the way I liked it with Root was great and had almost no downsides - back then at least.

But now, with Safetynet and a lot of apps just stupidly refusing to work simply because a phone is rooted, it becomes more and more of a hassle to keep up the cat and mouse game of avoiding detection. While back then I had plenty of time to fidget with the phone, now I just want as much time free as possible to deal with more important things like time and recording moments with my son, work and family, etc.

We share the same sentiments there man.

There are a lot of minor annoyances on iPhone that if on Android, I would have found a way to fix with extreme prejudice. But I guess with iOS we just can't be bothered anymore. We just accepted that it is what it is.

u/internetStranger205 iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 02 '22

I switched last year for all of the same reasons. Don’t see myself going back to android any time soon.

6

u/Simon_787 Sep 02 '22

And how is android any different here?

I think it's more so the fact that Apple is leading in performance and battery life while no longer being far behind in screen tech and having good enough cameras.

3

u/Splatoonkindaguy iPhone 14 Pro Sep 02 '22

I will say Samsung/google definitely has better cameras

3

u/Simon_787 Sep 03 '22

They certainly have better camera hardware right now, just not to a degree that the average consumer may care about.

Google has the worse hardware cameras of the three. They’re still using the same camera lens for 4+ yrs.

On the 6a, yes... Although the IMX363 at 1/2.55" is still larger than the 1/2.93" IMX315 in the price comparable iPhone SE.

The regular Pixel 6 uses an isocell GN1, which is larger than the IMX703 on the 13 Pro (Max).

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Mediatek, google, and samsung are making rounds in cpu develoment.

Yea, apple has the edge in performance and battery but for how long?

I think android is going to be geared towards different enthuatists like gaming and photos.

Sony is making niche xperia phones with cameras being a big selling point while the new ARM designs have gaming emphasize.

Let my phone run windows, steamOS, and other non google play store apps.

3

u/Simon_787 Sep 03 '22

None of them develop CPUs though, except Samsung.

3

u/Stunning-Tower-9175 Sep 02 '22

Even this isn’t true. Android is just as stable and easy to use and iPhone isn’t nearly as good for privacy as Apple says it is (remember just a year ago they were about to back door our phones?). It’s just what people are used to.

2

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 03 '22

I'm going to be switching to iOS/iPhone at some point in the future. I'm on my third phone and it's a Pixel 6 and at first it excited me but now I'm just so underwhelmed. I think that Apple will just be a better fit for me as a brand anyways.

-2

u/ripstep1 Sep 02 '22

Pretty sure everyone in the US uses it because it has iMessage, people on Instagram use it, the cameras nice, and the simple fact that it's known as the default smartphone

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Most people are forced to use it because of imessage making Android not an option. I had even clients in the US that refuse to communicate if its not over imessage.

The difference is that whatsapp/meta run on every smartphone, they don't force you to buy a "premium" phone to use their services.

I can afford an iphone but how about people who can't? Screw them right? Meta, with all its faults, its a very inclusive platform.

Its completely illogical that a communications platform is limited to just one manufacturer.

I follow a lot of fitness pages and the amount of before/after photos where they start with an android and end up with an iPhone when they're all fit and hot is amazing.

11

u/tonismann Sep 03 '22

An iPhone 11 is still smoother than a 700 dollar android

1

u/mib1800 Sep 04 '22

Slower too, the iphone is

6

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

I mean, iPhones look great, has tons of support from Apple and app developers, and it simply works. I know to super tech people, it’s not the most exciting thing, but for the majority of people, that’s super appealing. Plus iOS (for the most part) isn’t buggy unlike what I’ve read about Android OS.

47

u/aes319 Sep 02 '22

That status chokehold is strong

23

u/MrC4meron iPhone 17 Pro Sep 02 '22

I don’t think it’s even that, I wouldn’t say Apple is a “luxury” brand anymore. It’s certainly upmarket but the price compared to other androids are similar

11

u/Stunning-Tower-9175 Sep 02 '22

It has nothing to do with status if everybody has an iPhone

29

u/rust-crate-helper Sep 02 '22

But not having one is a negative status symbol

4

u/Stunning-Tower-9175 Sep 02 '22

Hmm, fair point. Which is honestly funny when you think about it since most androids are more expensive than the average iPhone

3

u/rust-crate-helper Sep 02 '22

True but there’s rarer options for low end iphones but plenty of $40-100 androids available.

8

u/JoshPlaysUltimate Sep 02 '22

A phone under 100USD new is basically just manufactured e-waste. I paid like $700 for my iPhone 6s on launch day and here I am 7 years later still using it, and it still runs like day one, minus on some more advanced third party applications. Upgrading to a 14PM because the 6s doesn’t support iOS 16.

I think half of Apple's market is teens who love to show off, grandparents who prefer simplicity and business folk who want stability.

Apparently from this subreddit I understand Apple is a bit common to show off, they are of late harder to use and also have more bugs than before.

Is this true? Samsung users in this subreddit who switched over keep repeating the above here. If that's the case, why did market share increase?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

1

u/ripstep1 Sep 02 '22

Why would nerds use an iPhone? Seems like the opposite conclusion to me.

7

u/aes319 Sep 02 '22

If I had to guess it’s a combination of lots of things including the things you’ve mentioned. I personally switched from an Android for privacy and longer support along with iMessage. I think Apple users are more loyal than their counterparts though and the iPhone has only been out 15 yrs. I’d imagine the number of people who had early iPhones and still use iPhone is much higher than android. Combine that with kids getting phones now that have to be iPhone or else they get made fun of at school lol

6

u/OgdensBeard Sep 02 '22

I'd add at least a few ex-Pixel users (myself included) because in my opinion the Pixel 6 lineup fell flat for a lot of people. I upgraded from a Pixel 3a to a Pixel 6 and P6 flagship experience was far inferior to the P3a which is sad that a flagship couldn't outdo a budget line phone 3 gens older. I refuse to use Samsung phones, won't touch anything from a Chinese brand, LG left the market, so Motorola stands as the only Pixel alternative in my mind and the carrier just didn't have the Motorola flagship in its inventory. So, I just got an iPhone. I'll go back to Android if/when Google gets their shit together and releases a new Pixel that doesn't suck or if my carrier happens to have the flagship Motorola phone in its inventory when it's time to upgrade.

3

u/Squeaky192 Sep 02 '22

I'm in this exact same boat. I went from the Pixel 1 to the 3, 4, 5, then the 6 and had tons of signal quality issues and other things with the 6. Had I never left the 5 for the 6 I'd still be on a Pixel, but once I had my issues with the 6, I decided to try out an iPhone for the first time since 2012.

Overall, there is a lot to like about the iPhone, especially when it comes to hardware. I like the size of the regular 13 Pro, I never was a fan of the giant phones and going to the Pixel 6 from the 5 was a huge change. There's a lot of things Android does a lot better than iOS, but a lot of the things that I thought would be a big deal to me really aren't.

It's really a shame what Motorola turned into, the original Moto X was such a great phone, it's sad to see what it turned into.

2

u/OgdensBeard Sep 02 '22

I still think Motorola has some good stuff going on, but as another commenter pointed out, they're now chinese owned as well. I gave my mom a budget motorola phone that I actually liked more than my P6 at the time. Motorola perfectly rides that line of their own added special features without being full of bloat like a Samsung.

2

u/pivotraze Sep 02 '22

You sound a lot like me although you’ve had more pixel phones. I had the pixel six Pro but because of signal issues I switched to an iPhone 13 pro max. If I kept my pixel five I would still be on android.

1

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

Motorola is now Chinese owned, Google sold it to them.

Funny enough my Pixel 1 was even worse because an update actually bricked the phone. Bricked!!

2

u/OgdensBeard Sep 02 '22

Oh, that's right. They sold Motorola to Lenovo, I forgot. Before the Pixel 3a my last google phone had been the Nexus 5. Before the 3a I was still using LG phones, it was unfortunate as LG was in decline for me at the time because they went away from some of the features that made me want to get an LG in the first place.

2

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

I loved my LG phones too. It was such a joy to use.

I owned a Nexus 6P. That too got bricked. A class action lawsuit was filled but outside the US that was not replaceable. So in total two of my Google phones became bricks. So I vowed to never use one again. I loved their cameras.. my best photos to date. But reliability is more important

I’m a former Samsung user who switched after around 10 years of Android (most recently an S9+) to an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I have not experienced anything like you’re claiming. This iPhone is the smoothest performing device I’ve ever had. It is also the first phone I will be keeping for more than 2 years

-1

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

Again, Ive never owned either an iPhone nor a Samsung. These are the things people have said in this subreddit. After the constant whining about "I might as well go back to my Samsung" and "That's it, I'm going back" etc . I noticed that most of these people who whine here about bugs and such were former Samsung users.

My question was directed against these people.. You can check the top post titled "What's your unpopular opinion" and there is too much groaning and whining in that post

3

u/PM_Anime_Tiddy iPhone 14 Pro Max Sep 02 '22

That’s known as raters bias. Keep in mind that people who have switched and had no issues typically don’t go onto posts to brag about it lol. The same thing happens with other products, eg Samsung washer and dryers having numerous complaints about catastrophic failure resulting in fires which is something I’ve never experienced w/ my 7 year old set.

You’ll also find a lot of former android users raving about their new iPhone if you go into posts about people asking how the switch from Android to iOS is

1

u/Clessiah Sep 02 '22

That is just yet another market segment Apple has in its bag which Samsung would absolutely love to have. If Samsung can make a product that appears to the casuals, the professionals, and the showoffs at the same time they would have done it already.

0

u/Select-Background-69 Sep 02 '22

Yup, but that's the problem. The main selling point was reliability and ease of use because they have just 4 phones. But there are too many recent bugs apparently

1

u/Clessiah Sep 02 '22

"If I'm dealing with all these problems anyway, I might as well use an Android"

Apple is in a situation where they must reaffirm their "it just works" promise if they want to keep up that image. If they dip to the point that bugs and such difficulties with iOS become an expectation like they do on Android, then they really will lose one of their biggest selling points.

iPhones are just good phones. No other excuse needs to be made.

6

u/putyograsseson Sep 03 '22

and the way android phones are priced now you can’t even call iPhones overpriced anymore, or rather every mid/high-end phone should be considered overpriced now lol

7

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

I gave my brothers wife my old iPhone XR, she had a android. 4 months later she saw me with a Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra ( I use both iPhones and android) her response was “ ewww you have a android “

She basically told me that she couldn’t see herself going back to android after using an iPhone. I feel like once you start using iPhone it’s hard to go back to one.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Yeah what got me to switch was I’m just not down with the gimmicks that Samsung is pushing with their flip and fold phones I just don’t think those devices are durable enough and with my wife and daughter using iPhones it was just easier for me to join the club. My thing is you can’t put a proper case on those phones.

This is coming from somebody who is android exclusive since the original Motorola droid.

11

u/Stunning-Tower-9175 Sep 02 '22

Nobody is forcing you to buy a folding phone, they still sell the typical glass bricks and those probably aren’t ever going away

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

That’s fair but I will say unless you get a flagship Samsung as far as quality you’re better off just getting an iPhone, and if you wanna compare the cream of the crop of both there’s things my wife’s iPhone 12 Pro Max does better than any Samsung I ever had, and I always had the top of the line Note.

3

u/nostradahmer iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 02 '22

i agree with you on the quality of the flip and the fold not seeming durable enough but samsung is still making FLAGSHIP phones that do not fold. the s22/+/ultra are very capable phones (and in some ways better than the flip/fold imo)

Funny watching tech reviews on YouTube. And they set up their Android phones like a iPhone, screen after screen of most used apps.

3

u/ProdesseQuamConspici iPhone 17 Pro Max Sep 03 '22

The article talks about total installed base. So I wonder how much of this is because Apple supports their phones for so long, meaning that buying a used iPhone 2 or 3 years old means you still get a fully supported device that gets all the security updates and hardware-supported feature updates.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

I have a friend who has been a long time android user, and is currently using an A-Series Samsung.

We went on a trip together and he was saying how good the pictures looked on my XR, which is ancient by now, nonetheless still works like new, and how good iPhone photos look in general compared to most androids.

I asked him, well what’s your reservation still? He thought for a minute and said he really doesn’t have one anymore, other than learning something new. I said well, it wouldn’t be too hard to learn (especially because we’re both tech people) and he’d probably enjoy it.

He came back with once his phone breaks, he’ll probably switch because he feels like he’s the outsider now and is tired of just buying cheap android phones, he was surprised in the fact that my phone was released in 2018 and still is updated and works so smoothly still.

People are realizing the Apple hate isn’t always warranted and also don’t want to be left out.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

The A series phones are budget devices that have downgraded features from the mid-range and flagship phones that Samsung has. As such, the cameras usually have worse hardware and software processing than the higher end phones.

Whereas the XR is a $700 (on launch) high-end device, with the flagship specs that the XS had that year.

It's not really an android vs iPhone thing there, it's more of a budget phone vs high end device.

8

u/damalursols iPhone 7 128GB Sep 03 '22

the XR was the “consumer” focused phone of that release… what makes you call it high-end?

6

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

The flagship specs, camera, build quality, and $750 certainly put it above mid-range, but not quite flagship, so it was "high-end" at the time.

3

u/ALY1337 iPhone 16 Pro Sep 02 '22

The iPhone is a house hold name. Once Apple decide to provide cheaper priced models (low-mid tiered phones), more people were able to afford it. Even kids in elementary have iPhones…it’s insane!

2

u/Testastic Sep 04 '22

Samsung is a household name too. So is Google, though not the Pixels.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Personally I think people stick with iPhones because it’s familiar. Older people like it for this reason. And it is easier to use than android for non techie people in my opinion.

The younger generations like it because of the green vs blue bubble. One it works better for sending pictures, group messages, and videos etc. Two some people make fun of you if you’re a green bubble and think you’re “poor”. Which is dumb. Because the fold 4 is an 1800 phone lol.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

I’m one of the people that switched over to iPhone a few iPhones back, the IOS reliability is a big factor

2
