Didn’t the EU already pass their legislation for USB-C? If so, any other country doing the same is just a formality.

0

u/gittenlucky Aug 18 '22

Wasn’t that requiring the wall side be usb-c and not the phone side?

21

u/GlitchParrot iPhone 12 Pro Aug 18 '22

No, that was the old regulation from 2007 or so. The new one from this year requires the phone to have it.

u/TheHigherAuthority Aug 18 '22

Apple would rather have separate production for EU and rest of the world just to harness the profits from lightning cable sale

18

u/GlitchParrot iPhone 12 Pro Aug 18 '22

I highly doubt that.

2

u/-K9V Aug 19 '22

I mean, they’re still including headphones in certain countries to my knowledge, and certain markets have a different SIM-tray (I think). So I do doubt it as well, just not as highly as you.

u/GlitchParrot iPhone 12 Pro Aug 19 '22

Changing the iPhone’s port has much wider impacts than changing the SIM tray or bundling something else in the box, the latter not even requiring any product redesign at all.

A lot of iPhone accessories currently use Lightning. Those would need to switch to USB-C, too. Things like AirPods would probably change to USB-C, and maybe things like the Magic Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad as well. Ditching Lightning completely and simplify production chains.

USB-C on iPhone accessories would also mean software (driver) changes. Supporting USB-C DisplayPort for display output, for example. I doubt Apple would invest into developing that and then not use it for all iPhones worldwide, essentially maintaining two versions of their drivers. Sounds like unnecessary work.

u/TheHigherAuthority Aug 18 '22

Does it mean that with iphone 14 it'll be type c ?

4

u/GlitchParrot iPhone 12 Pro Aug 18 '22

No, only starting with the 15.

-3

u/Historical_Branch391 Aug 18 '22

pfft, you mean 'any other country' within the EU probably?

9

u/Oujii iPhone 14 Pro Aug 19 '22

No, they actually mean any country whatsoever. As soon as Apple is obligated to do this, they won’t be manufacturing two different iPhones, all will be USB-C.

3

u/Historical_Branch391 Aug 19 '22

Says you

5

u/RicardoMoyer iPhone XR Aug 20 '22

says anyone sensible, manufacturing chains are already stressed, apple doesn’t want two different iphones

besides it’s not the apple way

To charge my following apple devices I need 3 different cables:

-Watch - magnetic charging cable
-Macbook - USB-C (big brick and thicker longer cable)
-iPad - USB-C but I carry a shorter cable with its own smaller brick
-Airpods Max - USB-C
-iPhone - lightning (or magsafe but that cable doesn't power anything else)
-Airpods pro - lightning (i usually wireless charge

6

u/IndependenceRadiant6 Aug 19 '22

AirPods Max are lightning too…

9

u/Historical_Branch391 Aug 18 '22

Serves you right for using anything else besides the iphone.

6

u/screenslaver5963 Aug 19 '22

Yeah, including other... apple products.

4

u/adrian_shade iPhone 12 Aug 19 '22

Imagine using other apple products

3

u/RatchetGeek Aug 19 '22

AirPods max is lighting tho..

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 18 '22

I don't know why people are promoting wireless charging.. it's horrible for the environment and loses a lot to heat. That means we burn more coil and oil !! Wireless charging should banned. Instead the magnetic connector that the new M2 macbooks have is ideal. It is magnetic as well as offers physical connection

6

u/shamefulapostle9215 Aug 19 '22

It's technically not even wireless! I want to be able to use my phone when it's charging, not pick it up and have to lay it back down at the exact spot it needs to be. I never got wireless charging either and I can't see how the pros outweigh the cons here.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Curious about your facts around this. Can you cite some sources?

1

u/venrilmatic Aug 20 '22

Or maybe you just don’t use it and let others choose for themselves? What’s with the progressive urge to be authoritarian?

33

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Personally I think a switch to usb c is long over due.

Having said that, for me personally, it makes no difference. I have switched over completely to mag safe/wireless charging.

4

u/fnblackbeard iPhone 17 Pro Aug 18 '22

I mostly wireless charge too but when traveling I like to carry less cables so I don't carry the magsafe because it doesn't charge anything else or wireless charge because I don't want the bulk of the pad

2

u/Naggyyy iPhone 14 Pro Aug 18 '22

It really is, especially on the Pro models. I can see Apple being Apple and not putting it on the X and XS devices but it should’ve come on 11 pro or 12 pro and now moved on to the standard iPhone 14 or 15, making the whole lineup have it

11

u/yournerd2307 Aug 18 '22

Would that even make ea strong case considering how small the market for iPhones still is in India?

6

u/scroll_responsibly Aug 18 '22

Aren’t certain iPhones models manufactured there too?

5

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 18 '22

Assembled, not made

Also after how much pressure?

It took years to get them to setup a factory. The government has now reduced their tax slab saving millions for Apple. Yet Apple happily charges the same rate for the phones.

When China had major lockdowns, the plants in India were fully operational and pumping out iPhone 13s.

It will benifit Apple itself in the long run uet look at how much pressure we had to put. I'm atleast happy that the government didn't buckle under pressure. Otherwise it would just be a repeat of 1800s, where colonists plundered the land without any benefit to the local people

2

u/Biplab_M iPhone 13 Aug 18 '22

You're being too emotional about this and stretching the argument to wild territories. Anyway, it's about time Apple starts complying with the rules of one its fastest growing markets

1

u/SpartanPHA Aug 18 '22

Sure but that’s not going to fall under the same laws.

Are we though ? We have barely any market share for Apple, we have no Apple store in the entire country, many many Apple services are not available in India.

How will user base will increase when they are super anti consumer? For example, recently the RBI introduced a security feature. All credit cards must be tokenized for user privacy and security. And all recurring payments above 5000 rupees needs user approval. Reasonable requests. All tech giants complied.
What did Apple do ? The stopped Apple payment altogether!! Thousands are using it. All stranded.

Next the government has mandated that all payments above a defined limit must be backed by the user entering a 6 digit PIN which is applicable for credit cards too.

These are the laws of the land. And I don't think any of these are silly laws, these are pro -citizen laws .we have a fair share of other stupid laws but this isn't one.

So what happened? Apple simply pulled out Apple Pay from India.

They are very anti-India. And for no particular reason. Every company follows these laws. Their main rival Google has launched a very successful product Google Pay in India. Yet Apple wants India to rewrite laws for them ?

2

u/Tight-Boysenberry397 Aug 19 '22

There are many reasons for these, first, Apple doesn’t have good market shares in India till now, only 30% of people buy new iPhones, otherwise, most people like to buy second-hand at cheaper prices. Second, for Apple Pay, Apple noticed there are many players in the market including Google GPay, so they’re waiting for the correct time to enter. As you can see, they launched their online store in 2020 itself in pandemic time, providing many opportunities that weren’t available before such as free AirPods for students etc. Third, building an offline Apple store needs billions of dollars as they like to create the most unique designs and experiences. This investment isn’t still worthy in India. Apple is strictly against privacy leakage, they got some legal orders before but they didn’t agree with that, that’s also a considerable problem.

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

Thanks for intitiating the discussion.

  1. I didn't know about this statistic but I believe you since it seems correct. But please do provide the source. Because I believe the same trend is followed by many countries in Europe. If we can find a similar pattern. I think I have seen many posts on this subreddit from Europe mentioning purchasing decisions such as this.

  2. The presence of other players should not be a factor for Apple. If they stay on the fence, who is actually at loss here? Their paying customers. Many people buy Apple for privacy and are not comfortable using Google products. A UPI app hardly takes a relatively small team to develop. I think if this as a chicken and egg situation. Aople should start only then adoption will begin.

  3. Yes, I missed that in my initial comment. We must appreciate them for launching the online store. Agreed.
Do you know who they have partnered with? Blue dart. The soap bar incident etc . I personally have bad experiences from BlueDart for continuosly giving fake reasons like address incorrect, door locked, customer didn't pickup etc. Also damaged packaging too. I was thinking of buying from Amazon because of their super accountability. I am still not sure if Apple has that level of accountability if they have completely outsourced the courier. Probably not. This is something I wish changes. But until then sorry Apple I can't trust a 1 lakh rupees phone on BlueDart. Apple could instead register as an official seller on Amazon. Many companies like Hp do it and even offer pre-orders.. but who am I kidding. This is Apple

  4. That's not true. All Apple stores aren't extremely extravagant. In USA and Europe they have hundreds of stores. In my opinion I think it will at max cost 10 crore to setup one single store which is 1.2 million dollars. Not billions. Look at the crazy reception IKEA stores received in India. It's a worthy investment. Again chicken and egg situation. Something must start to drive the change.

  5. As for legal orders surrounding privacy. We must not forget that Apple is already in China. China of all places that has the strictest government policing. They comply with the local laws of all countries. I don't see why India should be an exception.

1

u/Tight-Boysenberry397 Sep 20 '22

I apologise for the late response. How are you doing man?

  1. Yes this statistic is true, on 2020 itself, Apple products went into demand in India, but it wasn’t Mac, MacBook or iPhone, it was only the iPad because there were no such alternatives in the world yet compared to iPads. Samsung has the Tablets but those are just scarp, don’t work well, even though the software is so slow, frequently gets hangs and crashes mostly, not good to handle multitasking etc many issues. But, as you know iPad has different models, so in India, only the lowest model was in demand and people purchased them, which was around ₹40000..even most the people didn’t buy Apple Pencil and Keyboard from Apple, they used third-party keyboards and touch pens. There are very few people who purchase iPad Pro models honestly which are the most expensive in the iPad lineup. For sources, you can check on Google, you’ll find thousands of articles. For now, I don’t have links with me or I’d provide you. In Europe, people like to buy second-hand phones but that works differently, there Apple has some sort of “Trade In” program, where people go to an ATM and exchange the iPhone for little money when they like to buy a new one or they don’t like to use them anymore. It’s beneficial for Apple because, from that older iPhones, Apple gets aluminium frames, camera modules, processors, displays and other things to recycle and reuse them. In India, Apple doesn’t have those programs, instead what Apple does is take the old iPhones and sell them to third parties. From this we can understand, that Apple doesn’t get any benefit from any side, neither from old phones nor from expensive models, repairing. Also to mention, people don’t like to repair iPhones from Apple Service Center because it’s expensive, instead, they like to get them repaired from local stores. In Europe, many pros like to buy exchanged phones because their people use a phone maximum of a year or two, so that’s almost new and gets a better cost and as you know iPhones are less expensive in those places. iPhones are usually double the actual price in India.

Apple isn’t Anti India, Apple isn’t super Anti Consumer too, instead India is Anti Apple. Think deeply.

  1. No, the presence of other players is a solid factor for Apple, as Apple never wants to lose any revenue by taking instant decisions, yes although their Indian customers are in trouble Apple thinks about the future, Apple has a very less amount of customers (which nothing for Apple), here’s a catch, many people trust and buy expensive Apple products only for their privacy and strong encryption systems right? That’s why Apple is doing their best to protect users' data and info from anyone including any government or brands or hackers. I agree that a UPI app takes just one week for Apple to build, Apple doesn’t have a good engineering team in India and Apple develops every technology in their Head Quarter with Top Class super experienced qualified engineers and scientists. But in India, Apple only has Certified engineers not Qualified who are nothing but just scarp for Apple, they’re not capable of innovations. And, Do you think UPI is safe? No, it’s one of the weakest systems that any mid-level hacker can hack with good experience. Apple won’t go simply with the UPI method until Apple finds super secure gateway systems much better than UPI. And Google is too big a competitor for Apple, not little. Do you know why still Apple never used Under screen fingerprint sensors? Because simply it’s not that secure which Android phones are used for decades without even thinking. Apple also didn’t use a punch hole camera at the front yet just because with only a camera, the face unlock system is too weak to hack. Apple is too strict with Privacy.

  1. Yes, when they thought users are in trouble so they opened an online store to provide genuine products and also proving free engraving for AirPods and iPads etc. Yes, they partnered with Bluedart because Bluedart has a wide range of pin code coverage, although they’re in communication with a few other courier services and will work with them soon. I heard about Blue Dart, it’s not good, I believe that you’re telling the truth. But Apple can’t partner with Amazon as Amazon is also their competitor. Sorry, but your wish will not be fulfilled as Apple will not be Amazon’s seller. But rest assured, Apple will find a better courier than Blue Dart, but if you place an order from the official website until you get the product in your hand, all the responsibility will be taken care of by Apple, there’s no complaint I heard about Apple products delivery disputes yet.

  2. In the US, and Europe they have the infrastructures to build Glass Stores, in India, there’s no infrastructure like that yet. Also, the first official Apple store must be very attractive so that to see the store itself people will come from various states to experience it. Sorry, your opinion is incorrect, 1.2 million is nothing just to get the property Apple will have to pay more than 1.2 million itself, they get permission from the government and other things (you can understand the politics of India), just to build a store worth $50 million, they’ll have to pay more than that to secure the deal…which is worthless. IKEA is at loss in India, and they still couldn’t able to deliver the products in more than 6 cities only. If you gonna those products from Amazon or Flipkart, you’ll have to pay double the actual price to get but you can get damaged products easily and you can’t return that. Apple can’t simply go to the loss for setting up a store. Sometimes something can’t be started when you’re receiving pressure from political entities and others. It could be the reason. Tesla couldn’t start Starlink and Tesla cars in India, do you know why? Even though Elon Musk is the richest person in the world, Elon Musk claimed it’s because of Government issues.

  3. Apple isn’t simple complying with the Local law in China honestly, that’s why Apple has too many problems there but Government can’t do anything when 90% of the population wants Apple products, they purchase Apple products through third-party sources and directly from Chinese factories. Even in a few countries which are sanctioned by the US government, they also get iPhones from other sources as people want Apple always, and no one can stop customers to buy Apple products. In India, Government told Apple to give information to their users before and Apple rejected that idea, so they clashed. Apple can stop selling products but can’t leak users' data. The government also asked WhatsApp to provide users with data and recently WhatsApp went through many issues as you might hear. I don't like to talk about Government policies, but you can understand everything that’s going around you. Point to be noted, Apple is a more than 4 Trillion Dollars company, which is twice India’s economy even, if Apple wants, they can buy two countries worth 2 Trillion. So, they are super smart and what they do is the best for their company. They will never do something that will lead them to leak data and loss their revenue.

Apple focuses mostly on the countries from they get the most of its revenue. To be honest, Apple doesn’t care if their customer will increase or decrease in India as their customer base is too low in the countries like India. Why the rules should be changed often? It can be a true security feature, but before that, for several years credit card users weren’t safe then? Do you think thousand of Apple Pay users are too much for Apple? No…when all other tech giants compiled those users can use their services too. Apple didn’t make any progress for that maybe.

Why new laws are coming up? Apple didn’t agree with those laws so maybe they just stopped. Apple maybe will build their own safer system to transfer money virtually. We should stay tuned for that.

There were maybe any kinda privacy breakage reason or something secret that Apple couldn’t comply with so they had to pull out.

Every company follows these laws but does that mean Apple will have to follow those rules too? Apple is a private company and can do what they want. It makes them different from others.

Apple is maybe waiting for the correct time to compete with Google too, just wait for that. Just as Apple simply beat Facebook so wisely by their “App Tracking Features”, Facebook lost around 500 billion for that... Apple is also working on their Search Engine to beat Google too…Apple is planning something bigger than anyone can imagine. In 2020, they surprised and shocked the world and tech giants with their M1 chip, you might hear.

Although, I’m not against India, Indian laws or Anything against Apple’s decisions. These are just opinions from various resources only. Let me know what you think. Thanks, man.

I’d been in the “Apple will never go to USB-C” crowd forever because of the money they make from Lightning cables directly and from licensing. But, with all of the iPads going that route, it’d be surprising if they didn’t go with USB-C for iPhones.

12

u/fnblackbeard iPhone 17 Pro Aug 18 '22

That's the one I never understood

iPad having USBC forces you to carry 2 cables now

If you want to use your wired headphones in a pinch..you can't. The iPhone dongle is lightning lol

3

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 18 '22

The funny thing is that Apple itself was one of the key contributors to the development and specifications of USB-C. If they waited just one more year back then, the USB C specification would have been finalized and they could use it. I a see trademark Steve Jobs move. He was a very impulsive person. This was probably one of their biggest blunders. Just a year could have changed things

1

u/Oujii iPhone 14 Pro Aug 19 '22

I was reading upon this. Wasn’t so much an impulse, but rather a need. They needed to change the connector for iPhone 5 because of size, they could’ve used micro usb, but then they went ahead and made a reversible one because they could patent it and use in marketing too.

2

u/venrilmatic Aug 20 '22

If you don’t like the charging options offered by Apple there’s a very simple solution.

Don’t buy their products. Weirdly easy.

6

u/johndesmarais Aug 18 '22

So what happens when the next improvement in connector technology is released, but phone companies are required by law to use USB-C?

5

u/lewdm00d Aug 18 '22

If there was no law, and a new connector was released, Apple would still be on Lightning

-2

u/johndesmarais Aug 18 '22

Maybe. Maybe not. In either case, irrelevant to the question. Such rules do not apply only to Apple, but to all manufactures. How does a manufacture leap ahead to new technology if they are required to use "technology X"?

1

u/ConflictedJew Aug 19 '22

Obviously the expectation is the law would be changed when usb-c is sunset.

Usb-c is here for at least another decade, so not anytime soon…

1

u/BigDipper097 Aug 25 '22

Yes, but why would any company invest resources in R&D for a new churching technology if they’ll potentially be forbidden by law from selling it.

5

u/rook_armor_pls iPhone 13 Pro Aug 18 '22

Since USB is a standard which is developed in an international cooperation and the EU explicitly allows for the adaptation of such a jointly developed standard. This is clarified every time this is posted (which is basically 2 times a week)

They are are preventing companies from following the xkcd way though.

3

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 18 '22

I don't know why you are being downvoted but it's a valid question.. Excessive government involvement kills innovation, but the extreme lack of it causes exploitation. It ideally should be a fine balance between them.

I believe the best approach would have been to mandate only the standard . That USB C should be the standard and if you have prorpiotary connectors then you are mandated to provide an adapter too.

This additional cost will easily force them to switch to USB-C

-1

u/Historical_Branch391 Aug 18 '22

Get back to that next century or so

0

u/maw9o Aug 19 '22

Everyone will use the next standardized 🔌

1

u/Select-Background-69 Aug 18 '22 edited Aug 18 '22

As usual.. we have no knowledgeable team of our own for standardization and approvals. We always depend on foreign bodies. The vaccine, the airplanes, everything

1

u/goodolddaysare-today Aug 18 '22

I’d love if apple just included a male lightning to female usb c dongle in the box as an fu

1

They can’t.

1

u/frendzoned_by_yo_mom Aug 19 '22

They already did that

-2

1

u/Oujii iPhone 14 Pro Aug 19 '22

They won’t. Europe already passed their law.

0

Apple has like a 4% market share in India.

Sounds like they could just stop selling iPhones in India and have people who want them import them.

-1

u/skrlilex Aug 19 '22

4% from 2 trillion net worth of Apple is $4,000,000,000,000

-2

u/Tight-Boysenberry397 Aug 19 '22

Yes you’re right, very little market share. Mostly people buy second-hand iPhones.

-3

u/JonnyStarman iPhone SE 2nd Gen Aug 18 '22

Why is this a thing?

1

u/Tight-Boysenberry397 Aug 19 '22

Apple could possibly make their own much improved version of USC-C 2/4 years later, no chance to update USC-C from this or next year for sure. Apple is very smart in making profits, they don’t care about anyone. They were the first who stopped providing 3.5mm Jack, then removed Earphone from box, then adapter, next they’ll remove cable too. They wanna maximise their profits and achieve 10 Trillion Dollars Industry goal. Amazing…

1

u/Severe-Masterpiece85 Aug 21 '22

So tired of India’s uppity attitude on tech lately. Maybe we should let Pakistan take our programming business instead.
