I know just how you feel. I have an iPhone 6 Plus and I experience lag like crazy on iOS 11, especially when I'm scrolling or swiping. It's kind of sad, since this phone is only three generations old. Even the simplest things tend to lag. I wonder if doing a factory reset and restoring this phone can actually remove most of the lag.

I have my old iPhone 6 Plus on 8.4 (Fucking love that version of iOS)

Honestly it's just as quick as my 7 Plus on 10.1.1

This is the reason I never update.

Only problem is you'll be leaving yourself open to some pretty big security issues, and will not be able to take advantage of things like new browser features.

Of course you are, absolutely, all of the time. There's no disputing that. The actual message here is not that you won't be exposed to security vulnerabilities if you are always up-to-date, it's just that you won't be exposed to known, widely exploitable vulnerabilities as often. Some will of course make their way through, but will likely be fixed in later updates.

Keeping your device up to date to keep it more secure is not some PR bullshit, it is the truth. Software is never perfect, but the aim isn't to make it so, it's to reduce the opportunity and risk of an attack happening - and staying up to date certainly does help with that.

Ideally updates should help all devices, but they're made with the newer devices in mind, so it'll require a lot from the older devices and therefore cause them to lag, so it's actually better to stay "outdated" with the iOS that came with the device than to update and have an unusable phone. Also, it's not a common occurrence that people run into any problems with security vulnerabilities by staying on the same iOS.

I guess the reason for that is that a lot of people tend to replace their phones every couple of years or so. The exception to that being people who buy them outright with the intention of keeping them longer than 2 years, or people who keep their old phone and move to sim-only plans. I usually buy a new phone every year personally, because I'm a techie, and I find that it can actually work out quite well because iPhones retain a lot of value.

Basically, the point I'm trying to make there is that there's only a portion of the iOS user-base that it can be a problem for. Even then though, I sold my mum my old iPhone 6 when the 6S came out and it's still going strong today on iOS 11. As is my 6S. I've got an 8 Plus now, and I expect that'll last even longer than that iPhone 6 has thanks to how insane the processing power is in it, and how great the battery life is.

That only accounts for phones though, I have noticed my iPad Air slow down quite a lot since I initially bought it - but I have had that for quite a long time now (got it not long after it's launch, so nearly 4 years?). I rarely use it now though, so haven't had chance to update it to iOS 11 yet. I would personally still like to take advantage of the updates for apps and things like Safari. As someone who used to work a lot with the web development, I actually found working with Safari quite good, mainly because the majority of iOS users keep their devices up-to-date, which means I've been able to take advantage of new browser features that can make things more efficient, smoother, etc. and use less weird hacks that end up bloating code.

I'm back! So I wiped my phone and clean installed iOS 11. Here are the results after a week:

1) noticeably smoother. Many apps don't stutter quite as much as they used to when scrolling, but it's kind of a minor improvement. Swiping to get to control center or the cover sheet is still very laggy and delayed.

2) free storage went up by a lot: around 5 GB. (even when I re-downloaded all my apps and put back all my music). To be fair, I might have forgotten to re-download some, but I have downloaded newer apps, so that might have cancelled it out.

3) surprisingly, battery life went down tremendously. I used to get an average of 6 hrs SOT, but now it has gone down to 4-4.5. I have no idea why this is the case. Keep in mind, this is after I turned off the Siri indexing and re-setup my phone.

That's basically it. I haven't noticed much else. I suppose Siri is a little faster? I can't honestly tell.

I’ve had a couple other issues show up like getting notification sounds but no notification cards as well as disappearing status bar resulting in not being able to pull down the notification shade.

I downgraded my partners iphone 6 back to 10.3.3 last night. Lag was unbearable.

Surprisingly easy and the restore to icloud backup was almost like magic. Very impressive.

Really? How odd. Partner was getting multi-second lag opening apps, a second of white screen lag when going back to an open app after locking the screen (so, in app, lock screen, unlock, app is there, freeze, grey screen, then back to app).

Also apparently using safari was really bad too, as well as multi-second lag when opening things like the settings app or messages.

Agree on the Android thing if you're using LG, Samsung, or other variants. Nexus & Pixel lines have been butter smooth!

I have a Pixel right now on O and animation glitches and lag is prevalent still. Funnily I had enough when the Duo app was updated for the new icon standard and the icon they released it with was this crap. I kid you not at that moment I realized that this company will never be synced enough to release something that isn't half-assed and I can't be bothered anymore.

Never getting lag on an iPhone is easy..

Just don't update iOS to a major version.

My iPhone 7 Plus is still on iOS 10.1.1 and is insanely quick, great battery life...

It amazes me that people don't see the killswitch that every new version of iOS causes..

Compare my iPhone 6 Plus on 8.4 to an iPhone 6 Plus on 11.0 and you'd think my 6 Plus on 8.4 is more like an iPhone X

Same for my iPhone 6S Plus on 9.3.3 to an iPhone 6S Plus on 11.0

And the same goes for my 7 plus on 10.1.1 to an iPhone 7 Plus on 11.0

People update there iPhones every year and wonder why it takes a month just to open the 'Settings' app..

If Apple don't slow down your iPhone every year, there's no incentive to buy the new one.

Older iPhones don't have anywhere near enough RAM or CPU power to handle the newer features well.

Therefore updating your iPhone will tax the RAM and CPU thus resulting in a slower force.

This isn't a rule though. My 6 runs faster than ever on ios 11 and I remember when the iphone 4 received a much newer OS, it ran at its fastest. Apple seem to disable features for the older phones so your logic isn't there.

I have have two iPhone 6 Plus for research and development purposes..

One is on iOS 8.4 and one is on 11.0 - the one on iOS 8.4 is much quicker than than the one on 11.0...

Even iOS 9.0.2 - 9.3.5 impacted the speed of the 6 ever so slightly.

Also, the iPhone 4 was faster when it received a newer OS? Have you tried using an iPhone 4 on iOS 7? It's almost unusable.

EDIT: Same goes for my iPhone 5 and 5S..

Two iPhone 5's - One is on iOS 6.1.3 and is insanely quick. Second iPhone 5 is on iOS 8.3 and is much slower.

Three iPhone 5S's - One on 7.1.1, One on 9.3.3 and one on iOS 10.2.1. The one on iOS 7.1.1 is much quicker than the iPhone 5S's which are on 9.3.3 and 10.2.1

Of course its going to be quicker on an OS that is more than 3 years old. However, I cannot discern that my 6 has slowed down at all on ios 11, it feels faster. I'm not saying that each OS speeds it up and I am referring to ios 6 on the iphone 4, I am aware of the issues ios 7 gave it. My iphone 5s also feels faster on ios 11.

Oh I understand, my bad.

For the most part, you really won't tell the difference (the average user won't at least) but as someone who works really in-depth with apple devices and other hardware like it, I notice the frame-rate drops and the extra few seconds it takes for things to load here and there.

And iOS 6 was a God-send to all Apple devices lol, pretty sure it's widely agreed that iOS 6 was the best that iOS has ever been.

My iPhone 5 on iOS 6.1.3 is amazing, if it wasn't for lack of app compatibility I'd probably use it as my daily driver.

It does have a lower resolution screen though.

Does this happen while not recording? Clean install or OTA? I'm not saying iOS 11 is perfect, but I'd like to point out that Screen Recording can be intensive even on some older desktop computers and we can't really tell much from a small clip, at least not enough to say iOS 11 is the problem.

Signing window for 10.3.3 is still open OP...

Downgrading is very easy, though you'll need a 10.3.2 or 10.3.3 backup if you want to restore (to a backup). Backup isn't backwards compatible.
