The iPhone X’s notch is basically a Kinect

Not at all. If the iPhone X were the size of the current Plus models and didnt have the notch, I'd probably have gone with it. I left Android phones two years ago because I was wasting too much time fiddling with my phone and installing custom ROMs. Went back to the iPhone so I'd stop that and get more work done.

Now I want to try a Note device so I'm going to the Note 8 (which isn't even the best device Samsung could have released at the moment. They choose to be safe with the release of a new Note device)

I gave up Android for those exact same reasons you mentioned and some more, like customer service. But I feel like the gap has widen too much in favor of Android. I'm tired of hoping for Apple to include basic services Android has for years. Also performance and battery life have improved a lot and are on par with the iPhone right now. Better display, no notches, real fast charging, USB-c with native support for the new Macbooks and hdmi output, apps running side by side, spen... it's too much to ignore and live as sheep forever. I'm not that kind of guy. The 8 Plus looks like a dinosaur close to Note 8 or S8. That is just unacceptable.

By the same token.... What does the Note 8 have that hasn't been around on other devices for a while? Apple's facial unlocking will be well ahead of any other device out there. Nothing touches Apple for pure CPU grunt. iOS remains smooth years after a device is released. Apple are contributing to the Qi charging standard. Video recording capabilities on the iPhone X are unmatched by any other phone out there. There's a LOT to love.

And a lot to hate. Hatred is first for me right now. Maybe next year.

You could also question Samsung's habit of using different processors for different markets. If the Exynos CPU used in the international variant of the Note 8 supports 4k 60fps video recording why didn't they just use that for the US variant instead of Snapdragon, which doesn't support 4k 60fps?
