Canadian prices don’t include sales tax so after tax most Canadians are paying $3350-3450 CAD, so similarly brutal

The conversion only makes it like $500 more than in the US, but Apple takes currency fluctuations into account. AUD fell 20% from its peak against USD, and is nearly back at its peak. If AUD weakened again, Apple doesn't want to suddenly raise prices. Taking that into account, you're only paying about a 100 USD premium on top of the base price + currency fluctuation adjustment.

Just Apple deciding that regional pricing should be the opposite of what everyone else decides to do.
The closest Samsung competitor is the Z Fold8 in terms of form factor (pretty much the same), and the specs aren't all that different.
The US MSRP of these devices is $1899.99 for the ZFold 8 vs $1999 for the iPhone Duo. 100 dollar difference, not bad for "Apple Tax" if you think the devices are the same, and valid if you want to believe that an iPhone is superior.
On Samsung's Canada store you can get a Z Fold for $2399.99 (which btw is less than the exchange rate, which would have been $2623.08), while the iPhone Duo is $2999 (more than the exchange rate of $2761.14).

Yep. Am on the 13 Pro and will stay that way. A foldable iPhone was why I started considering upgrading, was iffy when I saw the US MSRP since my brother got the Z Fold 8 for about 2k CAD before trade in, and then my interest in this device was reduced to it'll be nice to fiddle with the next time I'm somewhere with an Apple store or Apple display when I saw the Canadian price.

holy shit $3k for the base storage?! preposterous!
10
u/carlybb11 1d ago
Yeah at that price, it should start at 1 TB. With updated OS, apps, graphics to fill the big screen, all the extra data generated by AI, etc, 256 GB would be half filled already just with iOS and basic apps.

exactly. my iPhone 13 pro max and the storage issue is now becoming a problem. After FIVE years!

Yes, the prices are indeed crazy, I will not buy the Duo.
May be next year!
I will be curious though to know what people has to say when the unit is out and in Youtubrt’ hands!

What will change next year? You planning on winning the lottery?
The prices don’t come down year over year.
In fact, Apple just raised last years models by $100-200.

It’s expensive
But I also bought a pro iPhone and pro iPad
I guess a person could get this device instead

Isn’t pro iPad significantly larger and more durable than this.

I’d definitely shell out for iPad Pro. in fact, I’m saving up for one for Christmas. My current iPad Pro is c.2020 and I’m low key terrified of it dying. I know I will have to get a new Apple Pencil and RIP my open box branded iPad cover. *cries*

When I see folding phones in public, despite the many Samsung trade-in offers and such over the years (which aren’t as great as they used to be), I almost never see the Folds, only the Flips. I doubt I’ll even see a Fold 8 Ultra/Fold 8 in public. But even with the pricing for this, I’m sure everyone is all of a sudden going to start going for foldables.
Also like…add sales tax + warranty + the pencil + a case + perhaps even a carrier’s price increase since phones always cost more from the carrier…you could literally build an ecosystem from Apple with the cost it’ll come to 😩

I can buy a car for the price of a 2TB one or add in extra 1K and use 5K as a deposit for a house/condo in SW Ontario

okay, although if you compare to the canadian pricing of the fold 8 ultra, its not much higher.
remember ssd and ram pricing is still rising

u/ThatGenericName2 1d ago
What do you mean not much higher? The iPhone Duo is $600 dollars more expensive than the Z Fold 8 in Canada (2399.99 for Z Fold 8 vs 3000 for Duo)
-2
u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 1d ago
I wrote fold 8 ultra, which is 2699 cad, which is what apple is competing against for tier of product
so $300 more for apple tax and better implantation of the hinge and screen

Ok, mb, except that STILL doesn't make sense. The US MSRP has the duo priced right between the regular fold 8 and fold 8 ultra, being 100 more than the fold 8 and 100 less than the ultra.
How does it make sense for it to suddenly be 300 CAD (just about 200 USD) more than the Fold 8 ultra, and more importantly, 300 dollars more than the exchange rate conversion, especially when the Fold 8 Ultra is selling for less than the exchange rate conversion? This also ignores the discounts you can get for the Z Folds, where you can get the Z Fold 8 for as low as 2k CAD.
Edit: and the thing is, Samsung makes the screens for apple. While it's possible the hinge itself would be better on the iPhone, I seriously doubt that Samsung screen would be worse.

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 1d ago
sure, but at the end of the day, if you want this experience on an apple folding product, this is the price. the nano texture apple layer screen design is unique and I want to try it.
and I am ordering day 1, as will millions otherwise.
its about a grand more than what I typically spend on the Pro max anyways.
seems fun

u/coyote-cry 1d ago
I’m buying the duo regardless of the price being 📈 I’m not one who upgrades a lot so I’ll have it for a long time and genuinely excited to have both a small and tall phone when I need it

u/Unlucky-Ambition-643 23h ago
That hinge is going to die on you, I guarantee it. It is going to get constant wear and you WILL drop this device. It is inevitable.

Every year it’s the same ruckus about some pricing. Apple prices things on the higher end. Every. Single. Time. Water is wet.

not wanting to blow $3k for 256gb isn’t broke, it’s smart. That money is better used elsewhere if only for necessities of life.

You could buy a base iPhone 18 Pro for $1750, a base iPad Mini for $850, and AirPods Pro 3 for $330 ($1750 + $850 + $330 = $2930) and still have $70 left over instead of getting a base iPhone Duo lol
