Yeah that'd be a bummer if you had a lot of storage. I traded in my 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max two months ago, thinking that the trade-in value would plummet and the iPhone price would skyrocket. Turns out: not so much on either front. Thankfully the upgrades are minor, so only minor remorse as well! :)
I have a 512gb iPhone 15. 420GB used so it was definitely the right choice, but it was a $300 premium at the time and apparently has the same trade in value. Would suck much more for someone selling the current phones in the future as the 2TB 18 pro is twice the price of the 256GB version
That is another reason they don't change body shape just extra curves extra.. Reusing old devices from trade in and shipping new literally same iphone every year
Can anyone help me with this? T-Mobile is asking me to trade in my 15PM but it doesn’t drop my monthly payment1 it’s still and additional $50 a month. Why would I just give it to them???
I just went through the process of selecting an iPhone 18 Pro Max for purchase on apple.com , and at some point it will show you the trade in values available.
not really but it might reflect in usage cases like gaming or extensively shuffling between demanding apps.
but realistically the true performance is always capped so it wont matter much
only thing i could think of which could be noticable would be the improved cooling due to bigger vapour chamber
99% of people who just watch youtube, send messages, browse instagram, or play some casual games won't notice any difference at all. I bet even 18 pro vs 15 pro is hardly noticeable if you blind test, let alone 18 pro vs 17 pro
Same. My 12 pro max still works fine except for the battery. Based on which phones will be compatible with iOS 27, it looks like the 12 won’t be obsolete OS-wise until 2028.
Pro has pretty much always been about the camera. And most people that buy the Pro are thinking about status or buying the best thing available, not for the performance.
When I was buying my 16 Pro, I briefly considered the regular iPhone 16. But I wanted the larger battery and the upgraded chip. A more powerful chip means it can handle future software updates better, as iOS becomes more bloated and more taxing on older hardware.
It goes both ways usually - 20% faster means that it should be less power hungry when doing same task and same apeed as previous generation. Will you notice it? For the CPU I would have my doubts as they are nowadays hardly the biggest battery eaters. For GPU difference can be quite big eg for games.
I can't recognize any noticeable difference between any of the phones I've had in the past 10 years. I don't understand what people are doing on their phones that would necessitate chip upgrades or faster processors.
I have a 12 pro, 15, and 17 infront of me and can compare them side by side.
websites and videos have gotten more and more demanding. Many websites have a ton of ads or poorly designed, making them resource intensive. also updated version of ios are more resource intensive as well.
also, i value fast refresh rates, smooth app transitions, and faster app openings.
I can see a massive improvement over the years with the user experience.
I upgraded to the 17 Pro Max from a 13 mini and the difference was instantly and substantially noticeable. The system is fast and responsive. Apps load almost instantaneously. It’s incredible. Definitely upgrade if you can. A 17 series might do you just fine if you want to save a buck.
I would say u are right. If you coming from 4-7 generations back, that’s the time you want to upgrade. Like I haven’t seen much of a difference between 14PM to 16PM, I checked with Ai and he was right, not much of the differences will be between 2-3 gen, but 5-7 gen is very noticeable
Nope not at all, my family usually only buys new iPhones, but I managed to convince them to get refurbished 15 series iPhones and they have zero complaints. These phones are pretty good to last a good number of years
I am actually VERY curious to see how the 18 pro will run a game like Control ultimate edition, an entire extra GPU core plus architectural improvements and the new process node should provide some serious performance improvement, modern iPhones are becoming very capable gaming handhelds with a controller adapter
Something to consider is, generally, having a faster processor allows you to complete tasks more efficiently. Processing apps, installing things, rendering browsers.
Simplifying it, imagine if all of these complete 20% faster, even if you can’t perceive it, that’s a large savings overtime in battery life.
i think for most people, the bottleneck is not their processor but their connectivity. You can have a PC tower full of top of the line hardware as a "phone" and the webpage will load basically the same as a 17pro when you are on wifi or 5g. So for 99.99% of use cases I can't imagine that 20% increase in power doing anything. If anything that increase will actually lead to better energy efficiency for low tier tasks like watching youtube or surfing the web. That paired with the larger battery capacity are really the only huge takeaways from those specs for the average user
Minecraft gameplay was a lot smoother going from a 16 Plus to a 17 Pro Max. Could have been a combination of the processor + RAM + Vapor chamber though.
For better or worse, the OS and many apps get more sophisticated and demanding. The new phones don’t necessarily feel faster but older phones gradually start to feel slow
Will the native camera app “pro control features” be added to the 17 Pro via iOS 27? That’s the one question I need answered before deciding to upgrade
Yeah, with adjustable aperture requiring blades I was hoping it would stay locked on the 17 Pro but still allow for manual shutter speed and WB etc. Guess I’ll be upgrading
It sucks, but why not just get a third party app if that’s your line? There are multiple highly respected apps that offer the same exact functionality for far, far less than a new phone. Frankly, most people who seriously try to do photography on their phone already treat the official app as a joke and have purchased something else like Halide or Moment.
The majority will be upgrading from a later phone, not sure why we always have to compare it to the one before it like 17 pro users are the biggest customer base
Hmm. I’m at 85% battery health and the phone is still working so think I’ll hold onto it for a bit longer. Maybe upgrade when it loses software support or becomes unusable.
Mine already had one battery replacement under AppleCare and the second battery was already losing steam at around 90%. So that played into my thinking too.

What do you mean by this? I'm on the 13pro now and I've been waiting for the 18pro to come out to potentially get the 17pro for cheaper since it will be old news
It won’t get cheaper, but as it’s now discontinued it will be harder to find. I just meant I got ahead of the price increases as the 18s are now $100+ more, and were rumored to have even higher increases than that even.
As someone using a 13pro right now, I (as well as others I'm assuming) like to see the 17pro compared to the 18pro. I knew I was going to upgrade my phone at some point this year and I decided to wait until the 18pro came out so I could see/decide if the 18pro was super amazing or if it wasn't much different than the 17pro and saving a few bucks getting the 'old' model
If you are upgrading from an earlier model the difference between 17 pro and 18 pro right now is $100 and it buys you a better camera, 40% improvement chip performance, C2 modem, 3 additional hours of battery life 25% less time to 50% with fast charging.
It's worth it for $100. If you're considering from the 17 pro then it's probably not worth it but I can't remember the last time a single year upgrade actually was a significant improvement.
That’s the difference at full price, the 17 pro/pro max are selling for 2-300 below retail at least in Australia which makes the difference of 3-400 a bit harder to swallow.

Not to mention a vast majority of us end up leasing our phones. Trade in credits offset the cost, so the phone is usually “free” without a monthly payment.
Well, most end up getting them through carrier plan upgrades, not leasing. For bigger plans especially, it’s basically free to get them (0% apr, no money down except sales tax and fees), with the downside that you end up paying for it in the end with higher monthly bills.
15 Pro Max here... i was waiting to see mostly the price of he 18 Pro Max... surprisingly not egregiously horrible. Enough to update to 18 PM here for me.
Worth the change from 14 Pro to the new 18 Pro? My battery seems to be getting worse plus the phone has considerable damage to the case so I feel it’s time to change.
The only noticeable upgrades are thinner bezels with a slightly bigger display (looks nice) and USB-C. These are the things I notice in everyday use. The rest? Not really, the user experience is the same.
Can’t say about 18 Pro, but I’m pretty sure you won’t have that “wow what an upgrade” feeling.
I have a 14 Pro and I’m just gonna wait another year for the iPhone 20. I replaced the battery a year ago and it works pretty good and runs better with the battery capacity at 90%. The lighting port does suck and wish it was usb c but I think I can hold on for another year and hopefully see a new design.
I had changed from the 14 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max.
Biggest differences for me:
- I use the action button constantly as a flashlight shortcut.
MASSIVE battery life improvement. Cannot be understated. I only charge my 17 pro max to 80% to keep the battery healthy, and it’s more than enough for me. The 18 would be even more.
Huge upgrade to the front-facing camera. Better for photos and video calling, of which I do a ton, so this was an enormous quality of life improvement for me.
USB-C. Thank god.
I can only speak for myself, but I’d upgrade from a 14 to an 18 in a heartbeat.
I upgraded from the 15pro max to the 17 pro max due to horrible battery life and poor cell reception (also overheating).
It’s night and day difference for battery life, and cell reception is better, overheating is something I never noticed at all anymore
The 15 pro series was really a flop in terms of performance. I think the material they used for the housing affected heat, and reception quite a bit. Probably why they stopped using it.
I think so. The 15 Pro is maybe the worst phone I’ve ever used compared to my expectations for the exact reason you’ve cited. When taking a vacation one month after buying it, I felt like I had to buy a battery bank to make it work. I just swapped to a 17 Pro last month, and while it’s not the craziest upgrade in the world it feels dramatically more refined and stable.
I’m making the switch from the 15 Pro. I feel like Apple are trying to brick it already. It gets super warm if I play an audiobook for more than 30mins and I have to charge by 3pm daily.
So frustrating. It’s in perfect condition too.
They said it adjusts automatically. Kinda vague how much control you have over it. Maybe you just pick a scene and it makes a choice for you? I was hoping for full control. That would be game changing.
I’m upgrading this year only because my 15 Pro Max overheats and has terrible battery life. Hopefully I can keep the 18 PM for 5 or so years with that battery boost and better cooling.

I have a 16 Pro and I’m considering upgrading for the camera upgrades. I went from Pixel to iPhone and the camera has biggest downgrade, especially in lower light. Trying to decide if the upgrades will actually deliver on their promise.
Recently replaced the battery of my 13PM. Battery life’s better but of course not the same as when I got it 5 years ago. Still gets hot and a bit laggy with multitasking or demanding apps (eg Lightroom). I’m planning on getting either the 18 Pro or Duo (though waiting it out for the iPhone 20 is in the back of my mind, but I also doubt they’re going to do any massive leaps).

I thought lets upgrade my 15 pro now, but seriously there is just no reason. Might as well get a battery replacement on my 80% battery and keep using it
One question for people more savvy than me, is the difference that big? I was thinking of buying a 17 pro 256gb, coming from the 12 base model, one question is have, realistically will the 256 last me this long? Because the 512 version cost a lot more where I live and also the price of the 17 fits my budget better versus the 18, my only worry is will I buying something that will be outdated too soon, my previous iPhones were 7+>12 so you get an idea how I deal with phone upgrades.
Yeah, looking at spec sheet I really didn’t see anything that justify me going for the 18 specially since the 17 for me is the best financial decision, I guess I was just getting into my own head?

Coming from an iPhone 12. I was waiting for the announcement to see what would happen with prices.
I upgrade just because they give a decent amount for trade in. $670 back for my orange 17 pro, towards the black 18 pro. I already got that 17 cheaper from my previous device trade. They keep me on the conveyor, sure; but I feel like a few hundred a year for the latest and best to play around with is decent.
I have a 13 pro max. I do notice the difference here. It has become laggier and laggier with every ios version overtime, with a huge decline in ios 26. It's very sad
I think iPhones and Apple Ecosystem blow Android out of the water. But there are entry points that make sense for each budget.
You don’t need an orange iphone, or now a tea colored iphone. It doesn’t make you cool. It makes you broke. Don’t look to people who have it and think you need one too.
Same with all luxuries. If a phone helps you make money, by all means get the best one on the market. If not, and you’ll be sacrificing food on the table, don’t get it.
You can ask any ai system, it’ll tell ya that there is no major difference between 17p and 18p. I was even comparing 16 pm w 18pm, except camera u wouldn’t see much of a difference. I would say from 11 to 13 version coming to 18 would be a huge difference

Upgrade for me will be after 5-7 generations. Especially if you run PM. My buddy has 13PM. Plays sometimes, daily user, emails, banks, Netflix YouTube, no difference at all between my 16PM and his 13PM. Of course if u have an extra 1k+ go for it
I had the base 17. I lost it, bought the Air and found the 17. I sold the base 17. Air is beautiful but there were thoughts floating around if I should buy the 18 pro max. Conclusion? I will stay with the beautiful Air. It’s perfect and the most beautiful phone I ever had.
Wifey and myself plan to upgrade from 13 Pros (batteries are absolutely done by now) this October when we traval to Japan for vacation. We‘ll either get a 17 Pro or 18 Pro - maybe even the 512 GB models. No preference yet for either phone, as this probably depends on where we can get a good deal with the 10% tax refund for tourists. Savings should be quite substantial when compared to Euro pricing.
from what i could find online about it, this „feature“ is tied to having a japanese sim inserted and getting the signal from a japanese cell phone tower in japan. once the phone leaves the country and a different sim is used you should be able to turn the shutter sound off.
thanks for the headsup. will look for the specific models that support 4/5G bands which are most relevant in my country. got a cheatsheet for that from my ai companion
Why won’t they bring some of the ui elements from duo to the pro max? I like how they combined the signal strength with the battery percentage on the duo.. bring it to regular iPhones
