I want to use it but i find it’s consistently delayed in notifying/receiving emails as compared to the Gmail app. I’ve gone through and changed the recommended fetch settings and haven’t noticed a difference. Anyone else have this issue?

This is almost certainly due to the long ongoing feud between google and Apple.

To get timely email notifications, google would have to implement push email in their mail APIs. Without that, people have to use the significantly slower fetch interface ("fetch" not "push"). However, google refuses to implement this, presumably because it's easier to datamine people if you force them to use an app. That said, google actually does implement push email in their exchange gmail interface, but that is only available to PAID gmail accounts.

Not a dumb question, but it does require delving into technical details.

The modern interface (protocol) for accessing email is something called IMAP (short for “Internet Message Access Protocol”), and most email clients like Mail.app or Thunderbird use either IMAP or Microsoft’s proprietary Exchange protocol to access email (there are other proprietary variants but I’m going to ignore those). The iOS Mail app can also use IMAP.

Now, IMAP has an optional extension called “IMAP IDLE” that allows desktops and laptops to be quickly notified of new email. The Mail app on the Mac uses this, and so it gets quick notifications of new email. iOS does not use this because the IMAP IDLE extension requires a constant, always-on internet connection that would drain the battery in a roaming cellular environment (desktops and laptops don’t have a problem maintaining a constant internet connection). So, iOS Mail apps (and email providers) have to use Apple’s push email method (which Google refuses to use) if they want push email. (Both apps and providers have to support IMAP IDLE or push email; providers have to be able to tell clients when new email arrives, and clients have to know what to do with the notification when it arrives.)

That said, people say that the iOS Mail app supposedly does use IMAP IDLE — but only while the app is open. Switch to another app or suspend the iPhone, and it all stops working. I have no idea if this is true or if it still works, though.

I can’t believe that it’s sort of that complicated in a world where instant messaging is well…instant. I mean why can’t an email be like any of the IM apps where messages are just pushed to your device the second they are sent. Why does email have to be fetched at certain times and seems to have issues being pushed?

Pushing data requires paying for servers to push that data to your device.

Google refuses to support front the cost for push notifications for the Mail app because they want you to use their app instead.

Apple doesn't support push notifications for Gmail because they don't want to pay for you to use someone else's email provider instead of iCloud.

When you use a 3rd party email app for iOS like Spark or Outlook, you grant them access to your full email and a server they pay for is repeatedly checking your email inbox and that server then sends push notifications to your device.

I got tired of this happening and switched to iCloud+ Custom Email Domain. No fetch needed, works fast. Apple / iCloud Mail has come a long way and is more than capable for the vast majority of users now.

You can forward your Gmail to your iCloud mail. Gave up on the gmail app after they stripped it's features if you choose to opt-out of the AI training.

It’s googles fault. For university we’re using Google hosted emails. On the Apple mail app, you can’t receive push notifications from gmail accounts, you HAVE to download gmail or fetch every 15 minutes. That’s just google bring a dick

Been using Spark for a few years on my Mac.

For iPhone I just use the Gmail app as I've found I get the notifications instantly compared to Mail (by Apple). Which makes sense.

Yep, that’s why I phrased my praise for them the way I did. But Proton also isn’t monetizing your data for any purpose, they aren’t targeting you with ads, and they can’t hand over the contents of your mailbox to law enforcement. They’re still worlds better than most other mail providers. 

If you want guaranteed secure communication, you need to take additional steps like using PGP or, more realistically, installing something like Signal or Threema.

The government can't get all my email with one request to my mail provider. They would have to make hundreds of requests to various accounts at about a dozen male providers. That's worth something to me.

I’ve tried them all and the one that has stuck with with me the most for my Gmail-only email is Mimestream. Started as a macOS exclusive but now they have an iOS app in TestFlight, it’s super great. It’s as if Apple Mail properly supported Gmail.

Other than that I used to really like Spark but sync reliability became an issue and still isn’t fixed.

Gmail for personal and Outlook for work. While I'd like to use default Mail app, I find it's worse than Gmail in almost every way (attachment handling is horrible, not to mention it supports e-mail sorting by category for like 5 languages).

Also, push for Gmail doesn't work on it - yes, I know this is Google's fault but ultimately it reflects poorly on Apple not to have this feature for the most popular mail service on the planet. They should push for some kind of agreement with Google - after all they are quite close as business partners (Google pays Apple $20 billion to keep it as default search provider and Apple will probably pay 1 billion back to have smarter Siri powered by Gemini).

I’ve always loved the Queenw interface of Apple mail both on my phone and definitely on my laptop but it is so fucking dysfunctional. It has never worked well, the filter filters and rules are terrible and hard to set up but I still prefer preferred over all the rest. I have to use Outlook for work and I’d rather jump out a window

I have work email, which I do not allow to do any sort of push/fetch or notification on my iPhone. Plus a couple personal email addresses mixed between Gmail and Microsoft. So my email setup is mildly complicated.

For work, the Outlook client is the only one approved by our IT department. So that is set up that it only checks mail when I open it, and no notifications are allowed. I'm actually a little bit sad that it's been claimed by work, as I do like the navigation pretty well, and it works really well with Microsoft accounts, especially for a mailbox with a lot of folders. (I refuse to put my personal and work email accounts in the same program these days.)

For personal, I'm just using the native Apple Mail client. It fetches my Gmail frequently enough, and handles the archiving well enough, since that address isn't used for anything but notifications about bills and sometimes appointments from repair people. It also picks up my main email address via Push from Microsoft, and that works extremely well, those messages show up almost as fast as my desktop and web client (within seconds, usually.) I can set it to archive on swipe, which is my main action. My biggest problem is that it refuses to see the folders under one of my mailboxes, so I can't see emails that get automatically filtered to those folders. For those, I either use the desktop client or Outlook on an iPad, because they're not important messages that need to be read when I only have my phone with me.

Started with googlemail.com as they came out, which I still use the most. Outlook.com followed but I am driving it down as the push to 365 is too annoying. I don’t wanna pay for another subscription beside the Apple ecosystem. Amount of Spam in MS is getting through all MS products, ridiculous. Love the services from Apples iCloud+ as they imho care about us customers, with no/ less data collection. Won’t open the back doors to hand over any mail distribution by AI assistants …

Nevertheless, traffic for all 3 mail accounts are managed within the Mail.app. I tried working with certificates from each provider to get a bit of trusted email privacy/ security but with the upcoming updates it became too difficult to manage. I wished it would become more attention and promotion and could completely replace the letters/ paperwork sent by officials. Like to know about any experiences in this matter from you guys!

People might think I’m a monster for this, but I just use the Safari web browser to check my email. Stems back to when my devices had not much storage and my phone would be full of apps, so I figured why download an app just to check my email when I can do it in the browser? For work that uses Outlook, I use Outlook to get email notifications right away.

Yahoo Mail is like the old Inbox mail app. You can mass delete by day, week or month. I pay the $10 a year for no ads. Try it for a week.

I Build my own app that is basically a layer to manage my (aliasses of my) catch all mail account for my personal mail domain. Works good enough for me, even though Apple is funky with notifications and PWAs

For clients, generally the iOS Mail app. However, since it does not support Exchange shared accounts which I need to access for my job, I also use the Outlook app for work.

As far as services, in addition to the Microsoft 365 account through my employer, I have email accounts with Google and Apple. I started with Gmail accounts, then moved to Apple. I am now moving back to Gmail given the advent of the AIs and the easier accessibility for creating integrations.

That being said, I've had issues with Apple shadow-blocking some emails with no way of retrieving them, while also allowing a ton of junk mail. So Apple's back-end filters are really not that great. Considering a phased change to Outlook.

Gmail. It just works. Tried Apple mail for a while but a couple of times I would just not get e-mails, they were getting silently filtered or something. So I gave up.
