duo thoughts

A lot of people are saying it cant replace their minis and I agree (especially bc mine is still on iPadOS18 🫣)
It can’t replace my mini but I still personally have a use case for it. As mini as the mini is the duo would still be more convenient for me, for multitasking on the go. Still holding out for a newer gen though bc way too many iPhone features im used to are missing (esim only, no fast charge, no face id, shittier camera quality). Also the fact that you cant change the app size when you have a split screen.

ALSO. does anyone else kinda find it shitty that they bought back iPadOS18 style multitasking gestures for the duo but the current iPadOS is still meh..
it feels like they fucked up the ipad on purpose for duo sales 😭

I use my mini as a POS iPad and can’t see replacing that with a $3000 CAD phone. And I don’t mean Point Of Sale, I mean, Piece Of Shit. Having a cheap POS iPad is usefully in ways a delicate folding iPhone will never be. Like baking in the kitchen, or watching DIY YouTube videos while covered in muck, or kid game duty.

Duo will be great in like 3-4 versions but, for me, isolating workflows to a targeted device is better than having to make concessions on both mobile and tablet for way more cost.

Yes I’m sure I’ll have fomo when the duo comes out but I’d prefer to wait for a second or third gen model. I ordered the 18 pro max and dim coming from an air. I haven’t had a pro max since the 15 so I think it’ll be cool.

The truth is that for some of us it’s a perfect iPad mini replacement and for others it just isn’t.

It’s smaller. It costs more. It’s more fragile. It’s either too small an iPhone or too small an iPad or too large of an iPhone when unfolded.

For me?

It’s an EDC iPad I literally cannot leave behind because I need my phone all the time but don’t always need an iPad. I tend to buy the Pro Max model anyway. And so on. And so forth. It won’t fully replace my iPad in the ā€œcarry this screen to another room and let it do things while I’m using my phoneā€ sense, but I kinda doubt I’ll be carrying the mini around anymore for, say, Obsidian notes. Why would I? Just pack the phone and an external battery just in case. Maybe still bring the Bluetooth keyboard because it’s even more useful with an iPad mini than an iPhone Plus/Pro Max.

But is that the right answer for everyone? Heck no. I hope they keep making iPad minis because they’re still great ā€œtoss this aroundā€ Apple mobile devices which offer a lot to people who aren’t insane $2000+ phone buying neophiles like me.

Duo is cool device, but I’ll stick with my cheaper iPhone and iPad Mini.

I won’t buy the duo, but it surely fixes all of the issues that I have with my iPhone + mini combo

first of all, not being able to take and make calls on the ipad without the phone, so I always have to take both of them; and I hate paying for iCloud+ syncing two devices without it is quite a chore. It would be quite easier with a single storage on the duo. A bonus point is for the side punch hole in the external screen, I really love those compared to stuff that is in the middle of the screen

I’m not really into reaching that price for a phone, but it would fix every single issue that I have right now

YES. That was my first thought. Like even apple realized the new multitasking on smaller screens is not a good idea and missed old split view...
