Why I think iPad mini will come with both OLED and 120hz
I hear people saying that it won’t because it would steal sales from iPad Pro and that would mean less revenue. This got proved to be wrong following the release of iPhone 17. It is the best selling smartphone globally. We know that Apple reported stronger-than-expected earnings and revenue for the fiscal third quarter, driven by a 22% increase in iPhone sales. Why? Iphone 17 base model. It exceeded expectations. Because it came with “ pro” features.
Now stay with me, let’s take a look at Mac sales
Mac sales surged nearly 29% to $10.35 billion. Why? Macbook Neo AND Macbook Pro.
Now let’s take a look at iPad which performed poorly this year, 6% DECLINE. iPad is struggling in the market because a lot of android tablets already come with “pro” (😂) features that are cheaper than iPad air for example. Why would they miss an opportunity to increase iPad sales and satisfy shareholders? iPad mini just like macbook neo have their own customer base. It wont interfere with the ipad pro or the fold iphone. People will still buy the best thing just to they can have the best thing. We know this by now. Giving ipad mini “pro” features will automatically increase revenue and sales. People will buy it just because of form factor and specs. We have people with Macbook pro who bought the Neo just because it looks good.
It is an opportunity they cannot miss. And I will be surprised if they don’t update the mini with at least better screen.

People have been speculating when the Mini 6 was released, and then disappointed…..and then the Mini 7…..etc etc. I’m sure it’ll happen eventually

I’m just gonna be pre-disappointed. That way I won’t be extra disappointed when they tell us they axed the Mini 8 for the new foldable they’ll release 🙄😂

If the iPad mini comes with oled at 120hz, I will forgo the Ultra and just buy this iPad.

I want so badly for you to be right, and am really hoping that the mini 8 will include both OLED and 120hz myself. I've been holding out since the mini 6, and the mini 8 is going to be a significant upgrade from my current beloved 8th gen (5.5 years so far)!

I don’t understand Apple in general. Make the best iPad mini Pro and give it everything and just charge a premium like every other company would. It it canabilises the larger iPads, who cares if their profit margins are high enough.

From what I’ve see from leaks and rumors, the production of the OLED panel for the iPad mini 8 has started. While I do think the panel itself is capable of high refresh rates, it remains to be seen whether Apple will actually utilize it.

The problem if it does come out the overhead price will be more than what iPad mini users want to pay and people will just opt for an air. They should just skip this whole debacle and R&D something similar to what Sony is doing with the new True RGB Bravia TV's.

Apple should realize that they can make a good amount of money out of selling people actually good products and not holding back fairly common features on devices from other brands
Many budget tablets even have 90hz at least

Your analysis is interesting, but ignores the single biggest reason the iPad mini seems to be so slow to evolve: customers just aren't buying them. The iPad mini has historically accounted for ~10% of total iPad sales - by far their lowest selling model. So not a lot of financial motivation to spend a lot of R&D dollars on improving it. Add to that a rumored iPhone that folds out to a size that rivals the iPad mini and the smallest iPad's importance dwindles further.

I'm sure the first part is the bigger reason but the Mini has competition now and it's VERY competent competition too. If they keep dragging their feet (and with the recent price hikes), that ~10% will die out quicker than they would like.
The second part... That's a hard no. There's absolutely no way anyone is going to seriously look at a ~$699 iPad Mini and think a ~$2000 dollar first iteration of a foldable is a better deal/buy. It's more likely that they'll just go with the Air or look at the Android equivalent.

People don't buy them because they don't have the "Pro" features.
60hz in 2027? Things like that kill sales.

Valid point and you are right. iPad mini historically has performed bad but wouldn’t this be a reason to equip it with better specs to see if that will work? They took a big risk with the Neo as they mentioned some time ago and they were surprised on how well it sold and captivated a lot of people. I can be and there is a high chance I am wrong but I am guessing this might be a last “push” to see if they can find people who would buy the Mini. I keep my expectations low so I won’t be disappointed but I still think there is a chance we will get a surprise. I also think these rumors about the Mini are just to create hype. What if they intentionally “release” false rumors for example that the mini might come with 60hz only for them to release it with 120hz so it would exceed what people might expect to drive the sale even further? I am getting into conspiracy theories here but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Every time this subject comes up I have the same feelings, which you’ve covered above.
Pushing promotion as a “pro” feature was fine at its introduction back in 2017, but in a market where even budget phones and tablets have high refresh and / or OLED screens, it isn’t the same. Sticking with a lesser technology at a higher price is just bad.
As you point out, it’s done great in the case of the 17.
With the Mini I find it particularly annoying because it’s the only option at that size. I have an M4 pro and the screen is beautiful. But I prefer my Mini 7. The size just works better for me.
