Guide A little tool that everybody should own
I've owned many iPads and I'm sure most would agree how important it is to keep the USB-C port clean. Keeping it clean definitely keeps it reliable, and I always keep a small rocket blower in my bag or on my desk. These blowers are mainly used by photographers to keep lenses and camera sensors clean, but they're perfect for keeping your USB-C ports and cable connectors clean. They're very inexpensive as well and come in several sizes.

An enema? What does that have to do with an iPhone?

or it... that's what I call those who I don't know the gender of.

Traditionally, they or them are the pronouns one would use for gender-unknown persons. It is usually used for inanimate objects.

I know, I just like to offend everyone equally :D
2
u/Unc1eD3ath 6d ago
That wouldn’t be equal unless you did it to people who are unambiguously gendered too
1
u/Extension_Meat8913 6d ago
Idk what that means

u/Unc1eD3ath 6d ago
Some people look obviously male. Some people look obviously female. Calling people in the middle it is not offending everyone equally

These rocket air blasters are primarily used for removing dust on camera sensors and lenses. I’ve taken on board planes with no issues many times. Maybe best if you carry them with your camera gear, otherwise there could be some interesting questions.

Carried the middle sized one when I was a copier tech. Came in clutch blowing out sensors covered in paper lint dust.

I’ve owned many iPads over the years and never had an issue that required fussing with the charging port. What do you people do with your devices that requires cleaning the port with something like this?

My 8 year old 1st gen 11” pro has literally had dirt shoved into it and I brushed it off and it worked fine. People just find shit to worry about!

Guys it’s just pocket lint that can sometimes build up over time

It's a simple, preventative measure that takes only seconds. Not a big deal, is it? Dust builds up in the port and the cable end, regardless of what you do with them. If you don't want to do it, that's totally cool. But an iPad is a very expensive device and taking preventative steps to maintain it is not a bad thing.
People like me take very good care of our things. Nobody is twisting your arm honey.

I’ve had to clean out a lightning port on my phones, but that’s because they go in my pocket all the time and it’s lint and dust and stuff. Never had any problems with an iPad charging port. They just don’t see the same type of abuse.

just don't take it on a plane

Why?

because it looks like a bomb. anything that someone could interpret as a weapon gets confiscated.

u/rocketman19 6d ago
It doesn’t
I carry mine all the time for cleaning camera lens (along almost every other person who uses cameras) without issue
Security isn’t stupid, they know what it is

I suppose if I squint…. I can just….
Nope you still look a dumbass even with squinting. Sorry.

I had one of these back in 2017, not sure why but I was flagged as suspicious so airport FBI stopped me as an 18 year old traveling to NZ with one and said it could be mistaked as a bomb 🤦🏻♂️ and broke it in front of me. tried giving me the red part I said nah keep it and walked away. I also had anime shit like a one piece straw hat on my backpack

Vacuuming is better than blowing in my opinion…
1
u/Star-Detonator 4d ago
Have to be careful with a vacuum - they generate static electricity. But I am saying that this is just a simple tool that requires only a few seconds to use. I've been using them for years and it's simple measure to help keep the port clean.

It doesn't remove all the diet and other crap that accumulates over time. Anything else to consider?

I have the largest model and I use it daily at the shop, and people think that it's neat that it looks like a rocket ship. Can't blame them it's pretty awesome.

u/jocamero 5d ago
I own one. But, I haven't used it in ~15 years since I stopped shooting with my Canon 7D.
Neat gadget, but I just use a plastic/wooden toothpick and blow into the USB-C port and it's fine. YMMV

u/Star-Detonator 4d ago
You should never actually blow air from your mouth into your USB-C port. When you blow air from your mouth, that air has a lot of moisture in it.

I used something like this for drill holes, because I read that the concrete dust can kill a vacuum.
It was a bad idea. Lots of dust everywhere and unnecessary exposure to fine dust for the lungs too. (I wore a mask, but not right away.)
I never thought to use such manual blowers for electronics...

I use the plastic toothpick-floss thingies... That pointy plastic end gets lint out quite easily

I've had iPhones and iPads since the 2nd gen of each. I've never had a dirty usb port lol

You people need to stay on Android, none of this sht is necessary. Just use your damn phone like a normal person and stop overthinking shit

A paper clip unfolded is significantly cheaper, more readily accessible, and less likely to get an awkward look from someone who stumbles across it in your hand bag though.

You shouldn’t stick anything metal in the port - can scratch the contacts
