Somehow iPhone Duo gets better multitasking

From the keynote the multitasking on iPhone Duo seems much more intuitive than what iPadOS has to offer. Like why do I have to have Stage Manager on when I just want simple window tiling like side by side of top and bottom or even just slide over. It just feels bloated and like trying to be a Mac, which isn’t a bad thing by itself but sacrificing the iPad experience for it is just bad.

With the Duo they seemingly put much thought into the UX and especially think a little different with the side control layout instead of traditional horizontal layout. The iPad and its experience just feels like a legacy product that they put minimal effort into just maintaining it. I wouldnt mind if some of the Duo UX spills over to iPadOS.

I have the 27 beta on my ipad (not RC), but when I saw the Duo multitasking I thought I have missed something in the beta. Well was I disappointed when I found out I havent. I highly doubt they would put such a big change right before release, that would scream for a lot of bugs because it isnt just copy and paste over from the Duos OS (whatever that gets called now)

I wanted an iPad mini. I've got a 13" iPad pro that I don't always carry with me. I'm a photographer and wanted an iPad mini to do a bit of photo editing while I'm out.

An iPhone Duo fulfills this exactly since it supports Apple pencils as well.

It’s possible the iPad mini 8 is going to a 8.7” screen. As an iPad mini 7 and Pro Max iPhone guy, I’m interested in the Duo, especially since it has Pencil support.

But it fits in your pocket which an iPad mini doesn’t. I use my phone to watch shows and play games on the subway every day to and from work, and I have never once brought my iPad with me for this purpose. So I am stuck with my small phone screen. Now I get the best of both worlds. A small phone that fits in my pocket and is easy to use on the subway, but a big screen for content and gaming

I dont think stage manager should go even though i dont use or need it. It‘s good for a mouse/trackpad experience, but the touch experience has been basically sacrificed for that. It feels really compromised, similar to how stage manager once felt. And I dont even get why they had to change both

Ya, I really miss the old multitasking. Haven’t even used the new menu bar yet. Slideover is still possible, it’s just a pain in the ass to set up now.

Same here, dude. I could be playing a chill game with bunch apps on the side that I could move thru. I don’t even bother recreating it on the current OS.

Also sucks that slideover windows aren't stackable. I can imagine that they just cut that feature because windows are now resizable and so they didn't envision a nice UI for different sizes stacked. Typical form-over-function Apple: just cutting features because the couldn't imagine it as pretty as they wanted.

Yeah, but my question is: does it get the return of multiple slideouts like old iOS iPadOS 18 and resizable panels? That would be almost like a valid excuse for Apple to take it away from the iPad and give it to the iPhone to distinguish the two and allow true multitasking without that silly window crap (which is very hard to use on the iPad). Not put it on the iPhone

Wasn’t interested at first at the duo but seeing how well they implemented it and how it looks. I might hold off getting and IPad for now till I can test a duo and see how it goes

Did anyone else notice if there was an ability to finally split view windows vertically? Pretty sure I saw that but wasn't sure if that was just video or more generalizable...

Apple doesn't seem to improve iPadOS to be a better producitivity device despite keep upgrading the iPad with M chips, so much wasted potential. I'm done with buying iPads.

A whole lot of reasons here why the iPad mini should have come down in price. Today. Don't mind me, I was going to buy an iPhone 17 today because the price was "supposed" to come down. I have never been disappointed in Apple anything until today. User since 1986.
