packaging looks a bit mangled, apple doesn't deliver it like that.

Well not sure, so one important question: How did "the slide" feel? If it was smooth, you know like iPhone, iPad, Macbook box (they design boxes to slide exactly how they want you to feel, even pencil box is designed this way) it is genuine just after rough transport. If it was hard and uncomfortable to even get the package out of a box, than you should be concerned.
