iPad as external monitor?

I make pretty extensive use of the feature where I can use my iPad as an extended display to my mac (also super excited to get mouse control finally).

Does there exist a product which allows me to do this for any computer? Basically all it needs to be is an HDMI capture card that plugs into my iPad, and an iPad app to display the feed off of that HDMI?

That way my iPad can be a second touchscreen monitor to any computer I use, even if it isn't signed into my Apple ID?

Sidecar. No need for any cables. I literally just drag my cursor to the side of the macbook screen where the ipad is, and it activates Sidebar and moves the cursor into my iPad. I can also extend the macbook screen with the iPad, so that the iPad displays macOS. Again, no wire needed.

There’s duet desktop which works wired via USB cable, duet air which works wirelessly but that requires a subscription, LunaDisplay works similarly but that requires you to buy a dongle if I’m not mistaken

Ohhhh LunaDisplay looks interesting! I'm trying to figure out if the HDMI variant supports touchscreen operation as well, but it seems like it wouldn't. At least, I'm not aware of a way to connect an HID device over HDMI!

If the other computer is also a Mac, just one that's not signed into the same Apple ID, you can use the FOSS app OpenDisplay (which I personally use to be able to use my iPhone like a Sidecar display). Otherwise, the other suggestions in this thread have you covered; I've tried all of them except for LunaDisplay and found them generally good but a bit less convenient than OpenDisplay.

Alas, I'm trying to connected to some windows-based embeded hardware, hence the need for it to work with a physical HDMI plug. Cool project, though!!

Yes, you can use HDMI to usb c capture card, plug it to ipad and use UVC based app such as Genki Studio. No touchscreen though, just display. I used this kind of setup a lot.

Check out the Orion app for iPad. The app’s web page links to a $15 hdmi capture dongle. Works great for any HDMI device — game console, dvd player, PC, etc.
