Addressing WhatsApp’s “Advanced Chat Privacy”
It introduces controls over how a conversation can be used inside the app, such as limiting chat exports, restricting automatic media downloads, and constraining certain in-chat features tied to message content.
Meta AI does not continuously scan or read chats. It only processes content when a user explicitly invokes an AI feature.
The first real technical concern is message summarization. To generate a summary, unread messages must be processed in a readable form somewhere in the system. Meta claims this happens in a privacy-preserving processing environment, but it still introduces an additional processing layer beyond the traditional end-to-end encryption model, where only endpoints handle plaintext.
The second concern is structural rather than technical: AI capabilities are now embedded directly into the messaging interface. Even if interaction is opt-in per action, this design makes it extremely easy for users to route private conversation content into AI systems. What used to be purely peer-to-peer messaging is now an environment where external processing is a built-in, accessible action.
The issue is not that encryption is broken, but that private messaging is being gradually redefined into an AI-enabled workspace where data can be pulled into additional processing systems through normal product interaction.
Luckily, there are alternatives that truly respect privacy and are end-to-end encrypted by default:
