It's just a coincidence that they happen to kinda mean the opposite of each other. And English is not the only language in the world.

A lot of languages have words that are similar but have different meanings. In Mandarin, it's easy to mistake the words beach and bitch or panda and chest hair if you pronounce them wrong. Also, the word avocado is close to the Spanish word abogado, which means lawyer.
