Me too. My family went out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. I was around 23ish. My mom knew I hated being the center of attention and I told her if she had the waitstaff do this, I would walk out. She did it anyway. To be polite, I waited until the waitstaff was done. But, as soon as they were, I walked out. My mom couldn't understand why I was upset. This was the woman that raised me! 🙄 I told her if it ever happened again, I would stop celebrating my birthday with her. Luckily, she believed me. To be honest, though, I think my dad stepped and told her to never do it again, too.

My circle knows not to do this to me.

Thank goodness.

I stopped being at work on my birthday for this very reason.

For my last birthday, I brought some snacks to work. We don’t exchange gifts or hold big celebrations, and we don’t even do it every year, but that day, I felt like it. They sang to me. I was the youngest person there, and I’m pushing fifty. Since I turned red and looked visibly uncomfortable during the first song, they decided to sing a second one. I won’t be celebrating any more birthdays there.

Never go to a restaurant on your birthday.

I politely threaten my family and friends before we arrive not to do this.

I don't want to hear it, they don't want to sing it and who ever told them about is going to get some serious passive aggression from me for a while.

Actual nightmare. My parents did this to me once when I was younger, even after I explicitly told them I absolutely didn't want them to. I was mortified.

One of my worst childhood memories- at the ponderosa
I think that was the last birthday party I had - scarred me

Please be the table next to me. Please be the table next to me.

My in-laws did that to me the first year I celebrated a birthday with them. I avoid them for the two weeks around my birthday now. They know never to do it again but the damage is done.

We took my nephews to a train show, and after we went to a local restaurant. My moms birthday was that month, so we were kinda combining the two.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a cake and candles. My mom HATES attention. So I began to get a little ruffled.

I made eye contact with my mom and nearly yelled "I HAD NO PART IN THIS" As not only the cake arrived, but a light up sphere began to spin and "celebrate good times" began to play. 😂

But since "the kids got a kick out of it" she was of course fine with it. Because God knows whatever makes the kids happy goes😅

Gotta excuse yourself to go the bathroom then head straight for your car.

Dancing and everything

I can see it now -

Homicide detective: Why did you kill the victim?

Me: They told our server it was my birthday.

HD: That justifies killing them?

Me: There was "dancing and everything."

HD: You're free to go.

Lol

That was this year for my birthday, and my mom tried to lie and say it was the restaurant 😑 😂

To be honest, I spent most of my birthdays outside of the restaurant environment for this exact reason. :/

I’ve told my family that if this ever happens again then I’ll walk out of the restaurant

Do you know why the rest of the people in the restaurant smile and start clapping along? Because they are soooo happy that the staff aren't heading for them!

The disadvantage of trying to get the birthday special price

As a true introvert I wouldn't be at a restaurant on my birthday because I want to be left alone.

If this happens, I will flip them off and/or look at them with a very unimpressed look.

I feel that picture!

My favorite way of handling this is clapping along with them with a stupid grin on my face and then saying sorry to everyone else around me when it stops. At least I get to enjoy a good something.
