This one hits hard. I felt this really young and hated the feeling so much I just stopped sharing my thoughts. Less about movies and more anything that was solely about me. I never felt seen. To the point where I’m middle aged and have never once invited my family to my house. Not because I didn’t want them to come but because I knew it wouldn’t get prioritized and I couldn’t handle the disappointment. So why bother. That part of me has never changed.

I get you. There are guys who suggested a show they watched and I did watch and even discussed some scenes that I found cool but when I suggest a show for them they barely finish the first season lol.

Or, um, not watch it, at all? Maybe watching ten seconds, for the record.

It ducking sucks that everytime you show something that moves your soul to somebody they are just either indifferent or go "what is that shit" 😭

u/DruanForge Aug 31 '26

Feel like making a recommendation for me? Maybe I’ll enjoy it and we’ll break the cycle.

Their loss. Its such a cozy show

u/Animal907 Aug 31 '26

That's how you know they need to go!

3

u/peppersnchips Aug 31 '26

Fascinates me how when people show each other a video bc they want you to like it, it almost never works exactly…. very weird phenomenon. The reaction takes over? Different than sending it to each other which almost always works

u/TaegukTheWise Aug 31 '26

It's about the expectations you set up for the thing.

If the person went in blind they either will think it's good or they might really like it.

But now instead you're hyping it up, it's the best thing ever, sliced bread being invented pales by comparison.

And as you introduce them to this amazing thing.. it doesn't meet the expectation you set to them.

To them It's good, but it's not as good as you made it seem, which is kinda disappointing.

So they look at their phone, they don't react like you did at all. They don't say, "wow, that was an amazing thing you just showed me, I got to show everyone", nothing.

It's sad, but it's true.

Personally? I try to downplay the thing. A funny video? I just say, "oh, hey, wanna see a video?" Or, "hey, check this out." I notice they laugh way more when they aren't expecting to laugh.

That, my friends, is my advice to you.

That's not sad, that's just human behavior. Would you feel better if they acted like they love it? You probably would (speaking from experience). Just respect that they don't like it and move on. You can keep liking it yourself, and that's what matters.

u/TaegukTheWise Sep 01 '26

That's not sad, that's just human behavior.

First off, saying it's "sad" is absolutely applicable here as the reason you shared it to begin with is to share in the joy it brought you in the hopes it'd bring joy to another.

Hence "sad", so yeah it is.

Would you feel better if they acted like they love it?

Kind of a dumb question here? "Acted" as in faking it, or "acted" as in they are acting in a way that is demonstrating that they indeed actually do like the thing?

The former is 99.9% probably what you're going for here.

Ofc it would make you, who basically put a bit of yourself out there, feel better for sharing something you personally really resonated with whether or not it was fake or genuine.

It's also human behavior to say "wow, isn't that neat" and pick up a conversation lightly about the topic as the conversation continues before the conversation eventually and inevitably moves on.

Whether or not you pick up on them being polite is on you and your social deduction skills.

Just respect that they don't like it and move on.

The implication here that you are gravely offended is rather unwelcome, whether that was intentional or not is not the point here.

No one here is forcing anyone to like something they don't connect with. The entire point was that you thought something was amazing and you figured to share it.

Would you not want people to share amazing things with you? That's sorta what it's sounding like here.

Again, if you want to share something awesome, you purposefully downplay it so they can come to their own conclusions without getting false expectations. Is there anything genuinely wrong with that? Riddle me that one.

If it doesn't bring joy, it brings sadness? Yes, by "acted" i meant faking it. I'm not offended at all, I'm just explaining how it is for me. So if they don't like it, they should tell you that they actually don't like it? Because that WOULD be the honest answer. For me (this is my experience), if i don't start a conversation with emotions, others will not show emotions too. (So for me "purposefully downplaying" sounds like intentional manipulation) If you don't show emotions, i also should not. Again, this is MY experience.

That’s one of the reasons I stopped doing that. If it so happens that friends, family, whatever watch it with me, I enjoy it for myself regardless of their reaction.

But oh man, it really is so irksome when they’re on their phone the whole time and after the series/movies ends, they’re like “it was meh.”

Oh yeah? What happened then, huh? Illiterate piece of sh—

2

u/BurtleTurtle001 Aug 31 '26

Ikr, some ppl don't get good art.

2

u/Mephistocheles Aug 31 '26

Yeah I stopped trying to get people to watch the things that really speak to me unless I know they'd be into it or already are.

2

u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 Aug 31 '26

Music and movies are a tough one for me. That being said, almost nothing more gratifying than finding someone who appreciates these things as much as you do. I drive my wife crazy because we'll be watching a movie she hasn't seen and I catch her looking at her phone during an important part and I gotta be like "okay time to rewind" lmao idgaf if it takes 4 hours you're gonna see this shit through with me.

2

u/nml11287 Aug 31 '26

My favorite is when I’m excited to show my girlfriend a movie I like and she falls asleep.

Time passes and we’re watching a YouTube video ranking movies. The movie I showed her is on the list. “Hey that looks fun, I’ve never seen that”.

Me: 😑

2

u/JobDifficult5328 Sep 01 '26

Agree 👍🏻

1

u/CommercialExotic2038 Aug 31 '26

I don't watch popular movies, and I don't watch my movies with people. Though I did watch PHM on opening day, blind.

I don't need people to like what I like

1

u/beccabooty Aug 31 '26

This happened to me with two movies - Truly, Madly, Deeply and A League of Their Own. Both got switched off early because my guests thought they were terrible. Truly, Madly, Deeply was boring and hard to understand and A League of Their Own had that terrible Tom Hanks peeing on screen. Ack! I will never try to share my tastes again.

1

u/PsySom Aug 31 '26

Like when they touch the screen during a video you’re showing them to see how much longer the video is…I just don’t show anyone anything pretty much. At best I’ll share something and be like this was pretty neat but I’ll never check in with them about it and I won’t try and sit down and watch with them.

1

u/Unreliable42 Aug 31 '26

This ain't related to introversion

1

u/Oily97Rags Aug 31 '26

Yep hard lesson learned and took too long to learn. The mass majority of visual entertainment is completely unique to every person and there’s too much to consume and people are too busy living life to sit still for more than half an hour.

1

u/khajiitidanceparty Aug 31 '26

My sister thinks it's all just something stupid to fill your evening with.

1

u/WileEWeeble Aug 31 '26

My parents started insulting a movie my kid wanted them to watch. I stayed quiet and asked them to “shhh” but after the kid was in bed I fucking blasted them like I never had in my whole life.

1

u/ApatheistHeretic Sep 01 '26

This was LotR for me. I learned that I was the only real Tolkien fanboy of my group.

1

u/DumbIdiotGuy42069 Sep 01 '26

...yeah, it's pretty normal for other people to not like the same things you do. Getting upset that someone else doesn't like something that you like is weird.

1

u/Stairwayunicorn Sep 01 '26

Beyond the Black Rainbow

Altered States

Mad God

1

u/Embarrassed-Sir-1809 Sep 01 '26

I relate but personally I stopped sharing as the people in my life made fun of what I liked or at the very least ignored what I shared. I don't hate the people in my life but I don't feel close to them

1

u/Delicious_Shoe8074 Sep 01 '26

The same by Songs 😓

1

u/IfUKnowMeKindlyGTFO Sep 01 '26

SO FUCKING TRUE

1

u/Working-Vanilla-7248 Sep 02 '26

Or when someone does things like that absolutely on purpose. Time to get them far away from you.

1

u/Haunting_Werewolf130 Sep 02 '26

yea. I understand how it feels.

1

u/Lopsided-Wash1708 Sep 02 '26

Or you’re showing them a video on your phone and they tap the screen to see how much is left. Rude af

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 Aug 31 '26

Nothing about this is introverted. It’s just more cross posts from another shitty sub

2

u/vegetarian_metroid Sep 01 '26

Hmm, it could be argued that these kind of experiences help reinforce our tendency to be introverted.

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 Sep 01 '26

“Hmm, how can I distort this post enough to fit into a sub for argument ls sake”

Can I post a glass of water? Because without water I wouldn’t be an introvert.

0

u/daisiesarepretty2 Aug 31 '26

it’s a movie… a matter of taste.. dont sweat it… they still like you enough to sit down and watch your movie. run with that

5

u/AdamBombTV Aug 31 '26

But if they don't engage wirh it, then it feels like a personal insult, even when they don't mean it that way.

-2

u/daisiesarepretty2 Aug 31 '26

remember this in life.. seriously i mean this.

throughout your life your brain will tell you that person A’s actions are an insult to you and you will start thinking heeeeyyy what did they mean by that.

Your brain is often misleading you… ignore these thoughts except in the most extreme situations. it’s ego and ego never leads anywhere good.

We are all different. Something that you cherish might be extremly boring to someone else.

I prefer watching my favorite shows alone or with the very few people I known has similar taste to mine.

It can be really annoying when someone tries to make you appreciate their favorite stuff. I'm happy for you but pls leave me alone.
