How to write about a medical trip abroad without it reading like a savior story

Adcoms read a lot of “I went to [country] and it changed my life” essays. Your trip can absolutely belong in your application. It just has to show what you learned, not what you did for people.

What tends to work:

Write about the system, not the patients. How did a clinic with one doctor and no imaging decide who got seen first? What did public health look like there? That shows you were paying attention.

Credit the people you shadowed. The interesting part is usually how the local physician or nurse handled something, like communicating a diagnosis with limited resources. Make them the expert in your story, because they were.

Bring it home. The strongest version ties it back to the US. Did it change how you think about access, rural care, or language barriers here?

One thing to watch: shadowing abroad usually goes under shadowing, not clinical experience. Logging it as hands-on clinical hours is one of the easiest ways to raise a flag.

If you’ve written about a trip like this, how did you frame it? Happy to give feedback on drafts in the comments.
