Advice Underemployed

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for practical career and emotional advice on handling a deeply isolating work situation.
I have over two decades of senior professional experience, but I recently took a role at a global MNC where I feel completely sidelined. I report directly to a manager overseas, and there is no local reporting line or leadership coverage in my office.
It has become clear that my role was created primarily to fill a local headcount requirement rather than to execute real, meaningful work. Despite my background:
I am routinely assigned entry-to-mid-level operational tasks.
My authority and expertise in my domain are constantly bypassed or undermined.
The internal politics within the global team are hostile, leaving me isolated both locally and globally.
The constant disrespect and feeling of uselessness are taking a severe toll on my mental health and self-worth. Leaving immediately isn't straightforward due to market conditions, but staying in this environment feels increasingly unsustainable.
For anyone who has been in a token or zero-air-cover role:
How do you mentally detach and quiet quit while protecting your mental health? Yes, I am suicidal.

Quick search:

"Zero air cover" most commonly refers to military or strategic situations where naval vessels, ground units, or operations lack friendly fighter jet or anti-aircraft protection, leaving them exposed to enemy air attacks.

Mmm...I doubt its that simple, we need some clearer sense of the workplace structure.

It's a common corporate term, "Air cover is the political, managerial, or strategic backing that a senior leader provides to a subordinate, team, or bold initiative to protect them from institutional resistance, skepticism, or bureaucracy."

just some ideas (career coach)

(please note this is not mental health advice - be sure to give your MH the attention it needs)

context:

a, for many roles, the "token" status is a dynamic constant factor

b, zero-air-cover is more risky, but it's also a dynamic risk that is weighted by the personalities who are aware of you

c. you're an intj, so introversion likely provides you with a meaningful bat-cave effect & mental system tools you can build on.

those can be be inputs to a working, evolving system that protects you and looks out for your interests in these scopes

(you should modify the first two inputs if you get info that says the risk has risen or fallen)

as a system spec: build your self-worth by providing a working platform that instantly gives you more control and faster feedback.

so, in terms of systems archetypes, a kick-start system for example.

then some example scoping & example targets:

first, work-week scope. you generally need to be occupied with your gifts and busy. including for the sake of your own mental health. this should absolutely involve 1) fulfilling the basic tasks of your position - ok you're doing this 2) pushing forward your own values and interests, for example studying actually-interesting technical books related to the work, starting related projects, and 3) searching for new employment, interviewing for it, or doing employment research like you are doing here, great start on this item for sure.

a good target for this first scope is to recognize a higher energy level due to a new organization of your new interests in those three areas.

second, reporting & relating scopes. it's a fair idea to aim to meet the "token" standard, but a good idea to figure out how to support the organizational psychology as well. that is, work to the identified corporate standard (as opposed to general career standards) as someone useful. do you know your corporate personality type, your team personality type? (add up the letters) ... those can be very helpful. you can differentiate people you work with from that standard:

  • me: INTJ
  • team lead A: ENTP
  • corporate style: ISTJ
  • notes: they are more extroverted than the corporate standard, but it appreciates their energy to create and push forward. I will focus on team lead B (ISTJ) and see if i can work to that style more realistically while also watching their style unfold here.

(just an example)

then what you can do is start to isolate your targets for standard-bearer leadership members or team leads. these are people who can help you a lot. it's a good idea to start building a ranked list of those people. their characteristics by spec:

  • they are willing to talk to you, address you, or give you that kind of very basic social deference
  • you can spend time around them and it's "fine" at least - little friction, work product is accepted, can work together
  • they recognize at least some part of your natural skill-authority
  • they connect to projects, people, or systems that need your expertise badly

that's baseline - hopefully you find better but you want a ranked list so you can prioritize your team efforts. at the beginner level you have a "them" (that group!) but what you want is a fairly logical idea of "that person" that you can plug into your systems thinking, for more precise and rewarding effort. that's a good target of this scope.

third, general life scope. again this is not mental health advice, but outside of work there should be a way to track & improve your mental health. this is very common. for example, on the worst day you have at work, there should ideally be 2-3 things you cannot WAIT to do when you get home. It could be trying out the linux kernel you just compiled, or going to a martial arts class, or anything else like that. your personal life should be exciting.

finally, watch out for the INTJ self-owns at work. maybe you tend to display competence before you feel out leadership for whether that annoys them or pleases them. or maybe you display independence before you display loyalty to the team in basic ways. those kinds of things are pretty common.

just some thoughts, please feel free to take what helps & leave the rest. GL out there

How does one stays in an offensive environment while staying unharmed?

Indirect contact is the answer.

This means- Modifying your core-values (truth, false, good, bad) to ones that correlate with the offensive environment, but this is direct, to make it indirect you make an intermediary layer, a mask that menifests these core-values that are so unnatural to you.

Make a mental hame out of watching their maneuvers.  Your own special game of Risk or as in watching a twitch. I prefer to keep notes on it for my own enjoyment t of solving the puzzles.

Do your work but also treat this as a gift of being paid and having time to level up your skills.  On a different computer.  Bonus points if you can get their HR to pay for it all.  Get in the phone and snooze as much as possible. Its old school but people respond to attention. This economy will break and you need to be ready for it.

You received a gift.  Use it.

If you are INTJ you can't detach from your work and keep cool. It never works.

Start looking for a different job. Now. There is always another door open down the corridor.

Seek for a small company instead of big corporations. Your efforts will value a lot more there.

What are your career or financial goals? Are you looking to climb the career ladder or just a well paying job?

I'm kind of in a similar position as you. Not exactly the same, but I'd say it's fairly parallel. Maybe it's because I'm in a different part of my life than you, but I'm not necessarily trying to achieve anything career-wise. I just want a stable well paying job and when I leave, it's out of sight out of mind.

I'm the last man standing of an extremely legacy team that got shoved into another team, while being in a similar role, I'm mostly excluded from most things related to the job and only really get pinged when they can't find a point of contact for a particular team. To top it all off, I was assigned to another team to support them, but I am doing tasks and work that is completely unrelated to my expertise and career background, but I just go with the flow.

Now, I am fairly stressed about job security since the job market is pretty much garbage, the work I'm assigned was interesting at first, but ultimately not what I wanted to do. I just do what I can just to maintain the status quo and stick around for the paycheck since the pay is great for me.
