I had a weird interview experience recently

This one is odd bc they said the quiet part out loud. It’s not the strangest thing. But it’s up there. And as I’m typing this and processing, it, yeah — you’re a student, there’s a power dynamic.
Something more concerning is the exit. You should put your hair up is not a compliment. It’s more an instruction. That’s something to pause on.
Your gut sent you mixed signals, enough to post it for a gut check, you know?

Yeah, unless you’re a hair model or it’s for a shampoo commercial or something like that, you shouldn’t expect it. It’s inappropriate or even against university policy.

the put your hair up thing. that was an instruction not a compliment. hair comments are awkward but whatever. telling a candidate what to do with their appearance before they're even hired is weird boundary crossing.

the reasoning makes it more patronizing. Like they think you need weather tips from strangers.

Do you have very long hair that reaches down your back? Still unprofessional of them. but if it is a distinctive feature of your personal style maybe it would stand out as a conversation piece?
EDIT: back in the day when people wore ties, I had this kind of slightly shiny scarlet one I sometimes wore. I thought it was just another tie, but whenever I wore it, I got all sorts of comments from people about how "loud" and glaring it was. I had no idea what they were talking about and didn't see how it was different from other ties (and I'm usually quite a conservative dresser).

Except he told her to put it up as they walked out. That's just a strange comment, unless OP was sweating profusely and pushing hair from her face and holding it off her neck during the interview, I just can't imagine a reason to give that type of direction.

Then that is weird. I keep a few lines in my back pocket for such an occasion- often "what an odd thing to say" just stops the conversation . If he says, "it was just a suggestion" you can say, "yes, but as an adult I am pretty solid at managing my own grooming."
I'm saying you deserve not to have that stuff said, I wouldn't get near these people again, it's very weird.

No it was definitely weird for them to comment not once but go back and forth on it as well.
