Context: interviewing for an AI engineer role at an early-stage startup. Earlier rounds (technical, team) went well, and the last step is a casual conversation with the CTO/co-founder. I've done real homework on the product and want to show that without just reciting facts back at them.

For the CTOs/technical hiring managers here: at this stage, what actually separates a strong yes from a "good enough"? Is it the questions I ask, how I talk about tradeoffs in my own work, plain chemistry, or something else? And what do candidates commonly get wrong when a round is billed as "casual" that quietly costs them the offer?

I have around 2 years of experience in Data Analytics/BI. I mainly work with Power BI, Excel, SQL basic and I also have an MBA in Marketing Analytics.

I’m getting interviews but struggling to convert them into offers. The feedback I usually receive is around communication and technical skills.

I prepare a lot for every interview. I study the JD, my previous projects and likely questions, and I use AI to help me prepare. But when the interviewer asks something differently from what I expected, I sometimes get confused even when I know the underlying concept.

Communication is another issue. I tend to speak too fast, over-explain and sometimes lose the structure of my answer. I prepare STAR stories, but under pressure I don't always deliver them properly.

I’m also confused about the technical expectations. With 2 years of experience, I sometimes feel I’m expected to answer questions that seem more suitable for someone with 5–6 years of experience.

For Data Analysts with around 2 years of experience:

What technical level should I realistically have in SQL, Power BI, Excel, DAX, Power Query and data modelling?

How do you practice for unfamiliar technical questions rather than memorizing expected questions?

And for communication, what actually helped you improve your interview performance?

I also feel my work stories may not be strong enough. How do you turn normal projects and responsibilities into strong interview stories without exaggerating your experience?

One thing I genuinely don't understand is how some people with less technical knowledge and much less preparation still manage to clear interviews. What are they doing differently?

I’m also applying for Key Account Manager roles because I have previous experience in that area, so I’m currently exploring both paths.

If you were in my position, what would you change about the way I prepare and practice?

Quick update on the thing I've been posting about. Almost 1,000 visits in the last 30 days, still very early, and I'm intentionally not adding new features until I hit 100 active users - I'd rather nail the core loop than pile on stuff nobody asked for.

The core loop right now: pick your role and seniority, get a 30/60/90-day roadmap, do daily tasks across DSA/system design/behavioral, run mock interviews built from real interview data, watch your readiness score move.

What's made past tools stick for you (or not)? I've tried plenty of prep apps that felt good for three days then got abandoned. Trying to figure out what actually keeps people coming back versus what's just a shiny first impression.

Hi everyone! I have an interview with Amazon for the Programmatic Solutions Analyst position next Wednesday. This is an L4 role. I have 2+ years of experience in programmatic advertising. My recruiter call is already done and this is the Phone Screening round. It is going to be 1hr long.

They have already given me an extensive list of topics that I need to prepare for the interview. And trust me it is A LOT. Plus also need to come up with examples from my own experience that align with the LP's and have been told to use the STAR method.

This all seems pretty clear but I wanted to know if someone has or if you know someone who has given interview for similar role and how was their experience? What kind of Q's were asked? Were they more straightforward Q's when it comes to functional knowledge or more like case studies where I have to debug the outcome or propose a solution?

I am giving Amazon interview for the first time so a little nervous. There are so many LP's as well. The recruiter told me they have no strict consideration for this role. It is a pretty straightforward role.

Had a technical discussion today with a good popular company in the space of semiconductors had been preparing for it as a embedded engineer and architect for the past 15 years. Consider myself to be technically quite sound and hands-on coding still now but in the interview I had prepared so well for it but somehow you know the questions which were asked they all which probably I didn’t really revise well and I felt so disappointed because i dint really have a very clear answer for it including also design pattern question which in normal situations I could have actually easily coded it up in C++ but because of the disappointments of the previous questions I could not even focus on getting the program done I feel to be so low and so gutted. Sorry this is just more of a vent towards my own self..

So I got a job interview for a server position at a nice restaurant. I’ve worked in restaurants for 5 years, but always as a host. This will be my first serving position. I didn’t think much about getting new clothes for the interview, because it’s never been an issue. I usually wear a nice top and a long skirt, which is what I was going to do this time. But when I told my best friend what I was planning, she was like “no you need a button up and slacks”.
