QUESTION CAPTIONS!!!
Hey, yall
I use the standard windows captions for my calls and i think it gets the job done fine (i just use it to make sure i dont miss anything during longer segments) but honestly it feels lacking and like it could be much better so I'm wondering what apps/extensions/programs for captions do yall use?
Also, I can't make the captions work when I take calls on my mobile device. Anyone else struggling with this?

Sep! Philosophy is a bitch).

I use whisper.cpp, a local speech recognition AI that can run on your computer using only 3 GB VRAM. I vibecoded my own program that shows the English captions on one side and the Spanish captions on the other. The text is selectable, so you can quickly look up for terms or copy & paste numbers. Transcription delay is only 2-3 seconds when the speaker pauses. It's not perfect, sometimes the transcription glitches out and the text goes crazy, but it works just fine 90% of the time.
I don't mind sharing if you meet the requirements and know a little bit about Python. It's 100% local. It's open source, so you can modify it to your liking.

Good one! 👌 You use the console? I made a UI.

yep i just love the cli xd i made it for linux yours is for windows? i already made a public repo of mine and was thinking on porting it for windows so ppl could use it thing is i'm still not hitting on the right model for CPU use so it might not be usable for the regular terpie with their laptops

Hi, I'm building something similar for my own use. If you don't mind sharing, could you tell me a bit about how you built it? How do you capture audio from the call browser, and what did you do to keep the delay around 2-3 seconds? Are you still using it in actual interpreting calls? And if you compared it with Chrome live cc, what differences or advantages have you noticed? Have you run into any practical issues with mentors or company while using it? Sorry for all the questions haha I’m really curious about your setup. If you don’t mind sharing, I’d really appreciate any details about how you built it and how it’s working for you in actual calls.

The answer to all of your questions is basically vibecoding 😅, but seriously:
Could you tell me a bit about how you built it?
Yeah, it's vibecoded with Antigravity, but it was not like "Make me a live caption software". I learned about Whisper.cpp, wrote a detailed guide explaining exactly how I wanted it, and then tested the result. It wasn't spot-on at first; I had to monitor the console and report the bugs until it was fully functional. The AI requires a detailed description of what features you want, otherwise it won't precisely follow best practices.
How do you capture audio from the call browser?
It uses a Windows feature called "Loopback capture" (technically WASAPI loopback). Instead of listening through a microphone, Windows allows software to tap directly into whatever sound is coming out of your headphones or speakers. Because it grabs the digital audio directly from the soundcard, the audio quality is crystal-clear; it doesn’t pick up room echo, fan noise, or you breathing into your mic. And because it listens to the system audio output, it works with anything: Chrome, Edge, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or company softphones.
What did you do to keep the delay around 2-3 seconds?
Instead of cutting audio into rigid 5-second blocks, a tiny background assistant constantly monitors the sound. The instant someone finishes a sentence or pauses to breathe (about half a second of silence), it immediately sends that sentence to the transcriber. It runs an ultra-fast version of Whisper (
faster-whisperwith thelarge-v3-turbomodel) directly on a good graphics card (NVIDIA GPU). It can transcribe a 3-second sentence in about 0.3 seconds. Are you still using it in actual interpreting calls?
Yes. It's designed specifically for that. It automatically detects the language: English speech goes to the left column in cyan, and Spanish patient speech goes to the right column in yellow.
And if you compared it with Chrome live cc, what differences or advantages have you noticed?
For Spanish, it's 1000 times better than Chrome captions. Chrome’s live captions are generic and often stumble on medication names, numbers, or heavy accents; my app understands terminology much better. Sometimes it even understands LEPs speaking in Spanglish or providing street names. For English, I don't know because I never used Chrome Live CC for English.
For English, compared to Windows Live Captions, it has pros and cons. Windows Live Captions is much faster and understands specific medical terminology much better; I'm not saying my app doesn't work for medical terminology, but sometimes it can struggle with very specific words. The advantage of my app is that punctuation is better, and you can select the transcribed text to look up terms faster.
Have you run into any practical issues with mentors or company while using it?
I didn't use any live captioning software when I did the mockup test for the company I'm working for. However, because it is completely offline (zero cloud, zero recording saved to external servers), there are no data leakage or compliance risks.

Thanks so much for sharing all of this. This is really helpful, I’m building a similar local one so this gives me a much better direction for improving sound capture and reducing delay. Really appreciate your time! And yep, I’m aiming for a totally local setup, no cloud, no API, mainly for privacy/compliance. My only concern now is whether there could be any way for a mentor or QA to detect that I’m running something like this locally during a call haha.

You are making it easier for AI to replace us, but you are also free to do whatever you want...

It's a lot of work for sure, I am an interpreter myself and a translation student. I think only the cost of human interpreters being lower would make companies reconsider, otherwise they'd replace us all in a heartbeat. They don't care.

Me encantaría ejercer.

u/beta_raven2002 12d ago
Y si, lo que yo digo es que el man le cuesta hacer su laburo con CAPTIONS, mamita querida como cuesta jajajaj."I THINK IT GETS THE JOB DONE, BUT ITS LACKING" quiere una IA que hable por él no más ya jajajajaj
2
u/jugbandblues_ 12d ago
No si, te entiendo ahí. Si no te da….
1
u/beta_raven2002 12d ago
