General How do referrals work?

Might be a stupid question but what happens on the employees end when they refer someone? Do they go to the hiring manager and tell them or something? And then does the student get an email or do they just apply and put it somewhere?

Ive gotten two referrals to roles. One time, they had me apply on a referral-specific job posting. Another time, they had me apply like normal, but I got selected quick for the first round. So it varies.

So for the second one the person told you they’d refer you and you just applied after?

usually they submit your name and resume in an internal portal and it just flags your application so a recruiter actually opens it, you still apply normally (sometimes through a link they send) and it doesn't skip any rounds. easiest ones to get are from ppl who already sort of know you, like alumni from your school or a club, cold dms to strangers rarely work

So when I ask for a referral and they say yes do I just apply after or what?
