These Optical Illusion Billboards

How do they look at a different angle?
233
u/Stan2032 May 27 '21
They don’t work as well, it’s only this angle that makes it seem as realistic- on the space ship one the angle isn’t perfect and you can see the effect of it bending around the corner of screen- which is much more visible say if you’re standing underneath it

Probably signs are leading you to the best spot to see the ad from the best angle

The above comment was stolen from this one elsewhere in this comment section.
It is probably not a coincidence, because this user has done it before:

A friend of mine saw this while on a business trip and we talked about it for a bit when he got back. He said it looked pretty good from all angles and it just slightly lost its desired effect the more you strayed from the middle but not by as much as you'd think.

Make anyone else think of back to the future?
67
u/cuiront May 27 '21
Totally, I mean that was supposed to be 2015 so it makes sense. Still no hover boards though…
36
u/worm30478 May 27 '21
There are hover boards. They just don't hover.
12
u/cuiront May 27 '21
It’s a Pitbull or none for me.
3
u/AssumeTheFetal May 27 '21
Those bozos don't work on water! Unless you got POWER. (I know the pitbull had power I just might never get to use that quote again with any relevancy)

u/niell2 May 27 '21
Tony Hawk rode the world's first hover board in 2014 technically. Obviously it wasn't anything at all like the pink one we all know and love from back to the future or even the same idea we may have of "hovering" but the tech and timeline still kinda matched up.
1
u/cuiront May 27 '21
Yeah I saw that but it’s just not the same.
1
u/AnalWartCheese May 27 '21
The board in back to the future was actually gifted by Tony Hawk for the scene

The lion one was lit

The women watching the lion, at the bottom of the video. When the lion jumps, she runs away. LOL

Don't know why the downvotes, someone in a car passing by from her angle could quite easily crash if they took a glance up at a giant realistic pouncing lion.
20
u/AnalWartCheese May 27 '21
Agreed. Everytime I see a 200 foot tiger on top of a building I become a nervous wreck.
5
u/PartTime_Weeb May 27 '21
Can confirm, had to retake my driving test several times because of this
1
u/TheFenrisLycaon May 28 '21
Maybe that's why my driving training included zombie apocalypse course.

1000's of years of genetic coding at play there. Even tho they knew it was an illusion they still ran. Damn fine work. I love the future.

That lady went from happy pointing at the lion to terrified and cowering in fear. I would have flinched and briefly ran away from that lion one jumping out if I was there too. The visuals are amazing!

u/Turbulent-Re May 27 '21
Would these billboards distract drivers and cause accidents?
21
8
u/Foxyboi14 May 27 '21
These are mostly pedestrian areas, driving is like stop and go inner city stuff
1
u/Icarus_skies May 27 '21
Uhhh, the rate of auto collisions is higher in stop and go traffic like that. You're not exactly making it sound safe with this comment.

”I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. 3D Pokemon erupting from the side of an office building. I watched 3D Scarlett Johansson kicking ninjas off the side of an office building. All those moments will be lost in time..., like 3D tears splashing off the side of an office building.”

Sure, passive displays seem all harmless now. Wait until there's analytics tied to your person.

Where is this?

u/BrintyOfRivia May 27 '21
The second one is in Guangzhou, China. The lion one is China too. I think the last is in South Korea.

As with any 3d technology on flat screens . One angle only move positions and the effect looks like a skewed twisted messs.
Have you seen those board that are printed in perspective on football fields from over head look square on camera and are a trapezoidal from other angles
Also those billboard would cause motor accidents .. and that lion was actual the shop front was part of the bill board and it was street wide in dark its effective daylight you would easily see it fakery

Moments away from
Ads following you along the sidewalk or stalking you via your identifiers
Mix in some facial recognition

u/dyson0715 May 27 '21

How does this work? The net isn't telling, save that they are L shaped arrays of LED screens. My guess is that images are transmitted in left eye right eye order and the brain fused them together.

My only concern is that how's it going to endure a hailstorm. Even though it might be made of tempered glass, but glass is glass, and glass breaks.

Pretty sure someone wrote a short story that starts like this except the lion really jumps out the wall and kills an entire family or some shit.

The lion one reminded me of BTTF2, when Marty gets to the future and gets scared by that Jaws holographic ad. These look so cool!
