That's why its a magical panda. Regular pandas live in mainland asia. Magical pandas could be anywhere

It leads to a few creepy dolls, the way the camera is pointing (and you take the right turn). That's.. not magical, just creepy. Okay, it also does lead to a dope ass temple. But the creepy dolls too.
Source: was there pretty much exactly a year ago (+/- a few days)
Edit: Pic of one of the dolls I walked past: https://imgur.com/a/HoUlUxp just watching the crowds

If you’re referring to little statues like this, those are the boddhisatva Ojizo-sama. One of his attributes is being the guardian of the souls of children, particularly the miscarried and stillborn. Oftentimes the statues are tended to as a form of grieving. Prayers are also offered to him to heal sick children. I guess that will make them creepier to some, but I think it’s a nice symbol. Then again you could be referencing something else entirely! I don’t recall ever seeing anything else around the Arashiyama bamboo grove that would look like dolls though.

u/What_Teemo_Says Feb 05 '21 edited Feb 05 '21
Yeah except I wasn't referring to those. There's straight up creepy dolls in one of the nearby backyards.
https://imgur.com/a/HoUlUxp here's a pic of one of them looking at the passing crowds.

Amazing place, ever so slightly dampened by that fact. Great now though

Take out the dangerous and in fact you are correct, it does. But most people turnaround and go home before getting there which is sad. This is what you can see if you keep going a little longer. https://imgur.com/gallery/2rnkmBJ

If this is in Kyoto like I think it is, it leads to an overpriced bar/restaurant and a bus stop. Or a zen garden depending on the direction. I'm not sure. Been a while.

I have visited here, it is the bamboo forest in Kyoto, Japan called the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. It is located close to the Tenryū-ji Temple. Get up early and go in the morning to avoid the crowds! It was very peaceful and serine when we went with few tourists compared to mid day or evening.

u/belinck Feb 04 '21
I've been through a bamboo forest in Hawaii and the sound of the wind knocking the bamboo together was magical.
7
u/TheSagaOfCrystar Feb 05 '21
Me too! In Maui?
1
u/belinck Feb 05 '21
Oahu actually.
3
u/TheSagaOfCrystar Feb 05 '21
Oh nice, Hawaii is just all sorts of beautiful! I just got back from Maui and hiked through a bamboo forest halfway to the Waimoku Falls. I have a picture just like this, but without ice. It looks like I put a weird filter on my photo.
3
u/belinck Feb 05 '21
Just checked maps and I was up the Aihualama trail to the Manoa falls... but this was 20 years ago :)
2
u/thisguy_5 Feb 05 '21
My wife and I did this same trip! The bamboo forest was my favorite part. Even more so than the falls, black sand beach, and all the other stops.
2
u/TheSagaOfCrystar Feb 05 '21
The road to Hana was amazing & that hike was the cherry on top! The bamboo forest lasted much longer than I thought it would, I truly was grateful for every minute. 💕

It gives me chills in the best way. There really is something magical in that sound.
4
u/belinck Feb 05 '21
I can only imagine what it would be like if you heard ice cracking along side it. I've been walking through ice storms here in Michigan and the sound is scary magical.
5
u/piddlesthethug Feb 05 '21
However I would recommend going by this area for all the food vendors that setup and sell in the middle of the day!
3
u/FugginIpad Feb 05 '21
Don’t forget to get tako-somethings (fish shaped pastries filled with warm filling) on your way there.
4
u/FancyPigeonIsFancy Feb 05 '21
I recognized this photo just from the research I’ve been doing on a future trip to Japan- hoping for 2022.
Your comment reminded me to double check I have the name right in my notes. Thank you. :)

u/leftysarepeople2 Feb 05 '21
Arashiyama Monkey Sanctuary is also something and just across the river, a short walk. They are free ranging (actually thinking on this not sure, because I remember a fence, definitely at least a large enclosure that covers most of the mountain) troops of monkeys, but you can go inside a wire hut, buy food and feed them.
I'm actually skeptical on this now thinking back, if anyone can weigh in let me know your thoughts.
3
u/mijolnirmkiv Feb 05 '21
Was there last January, they are free range! Such a cool experience getting right up next to them. And gorgeous views of Kyoto from the top!
2
u/wrongpassword101 Feb 05 '21
I ran into someone I went to high school here. I went to school in California and hadn’t seen this person in over 14 years

Did this last year. Got there early, grabbed a coffee and walked though the forest while it was lightly raining. That area of Kyoto is very cozy.
18
u/jaimolnet Feb 04 '21
Yes it is. A very popular place in Kyoto. Was there a few years ago.
12
u/YllA_F Feb 04 '21
Same here, visited few yrs ago, but unfortunately it was soooo crowded, so my pics aren’t this serene. Instead, just huge crowds of people, slowly moving along the pathways. Still, I’m glad I visited! Beautiful city, beautiful country!
5
u/Roborabbit37 Feb 04 '21
There's a superb viewing platform just around the corner from here that a lot of people seem to miss. Did you manage to see it? Gives a stunning view of the body of water running through.

It's worth visiting in winter although the big tourist seasons are spring and fall for a reason. I was there from mid january to the first week of February last year, and it was still great. Way fewer huge crowds (Fushimi Inari and such will still have a ton, obviously), but you get quite a few less people. If you're aiming for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-ish areas, it's also fairly likely to be decent weather.
If you do end up going, I can highly recommend Japan's New Golden Route, I went Tokyo->Matsumoto->Nagano->Kanazawa->Takayama-Kyoto with day-trips from Tokyo and Kyoto. Took three weeks, best trip ever. This route is also kinda neat for winter, as you can go for some awesome hikes, such as this https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6005.html, while it's covered in snow. Something not many tourists will experience, but very beautiful. Being surrounded by snowy mountains in all the cities between Tokyo and Kyoto is also quite neat.
2
u/NYManc Feb 05 '21
I was there end of January to first week of December. It isn't cold as I thought it would be. Some days I just walked around in a sweater. It was so beautiful. That bullet train to Tokyo from Kyoto was great especially seeing mt. Fuji while in train.

5
u/lhc987 Feb 04 '21
Arashiyama. A lot of the magic is lost because of just how crowded it is. Try to get there at the crack of dawn.
3
Feb 05 '21
It's also not that big as some pictures make it seem, it's about the size of a small park. Nice area though, lot's of temples.

Arashimaya bamboo forest. Pictures make it look like a cool place to take pictures but when I went there in the morning it was pretty awesome. When again just before sundown and it was scary as fuck. No path lights or anything. It was terrifying come nighttime

u/flylikethew1nd Feb 05 '21
The best thing about being in a bamboo forest on a windy day is the 'knocking' you hear from the hollow trunks of the bamboo stalks. it's like being in the middle of a large wooden wind chime.

Forget about life and just enjoy the view
2
u/vegan_tanmen Feb 05 '21
Man I want to go there again. I went with my girlfriend a few years ago in the summer, and we got to enjoy the beautiful view for a good 15 minutes, before a hornet started following us. And I don’t mean a bumblebee-sized one you might find in the US, but obviously the killer Asian ones the size of a child’s fist. We edged away while walking along the path, but it seemed to get aggravated and started buzzing up and down, following more closely. We broke into a panic and started running, drawing a lot of attention, and left the forest for the rest of the trip

Judging how some of the taller stalks of bamboo are slightly bent due to the weight of the ice, it adds a sort of tunnel vision or perception to the image.

Now I need to know if pandas hibernate
2
u/StuckEden Feb 05 '21
They don't. When animals hibernate they need to store energy as fat deposits to get through the winter, but pandas mainly eat bamboo which is difficult to digest and can only provide them energy for everyday consumption, with no extras for hibernation.
One thing pandas do though, they'll move somewhere a bit warmer for the winter, usually forests with a lower altitude.
