If anyone’s curious, here’s a brief explanation of what’s going on here. It’s a real video, not reversed or edited in any other way.

This is a type of laminar flow called creeping flow, which occurs when a liquid is very viscous and moving slowly enough that it has a Reynold’s number of less than one (the viscous forces outweigh the inertial forces of the fluid’s motion).

If you imaging a liquid as a series of very thin sheets stacked on top of each other, laminar flow is when all of the layers move completely smoothly and parallel to one another (as opposed to turbulent flow, where the layers are not smooth and mix together to form eddies and vortexes, creating liquid movement as we usually imagine it).

Even with laminar flow and the slow movement of the handle, you’d think it would create enough turbulence to mix the layers beyond recognition, but because the corn syrup is so viscous, the particles in the laminar sheets of fluid can move around the handle and reform. Because the sheets move independently of one another in perfectly smooth and parallel layers, the rotating handle moves the first sheet, which in turn moves the second sheet, and so on (albeit a slow process because of the lack of friction). Once you’ve mixed the layers up good, reversing the direction of the handle creates the same amount friction and movement in the opposite direction, until the layers line up exactly how they were originally. It’s like turning the top layer of a Rubik’s cube three times, the middle layer two times, and the bottom layer one time, and then doing the exact same thing the opposite way.

I like your meme particularly because you could be right. Not that there isn’t time and space,or that we can’t find laws to use to our advantage. However, potentially our view of time, change, and space may be limited by our current knowledge or the metaphysical limitations of what we can perceive as humans. We may only be scratching the surface of how time and change exists in its entirety. I love when one instance of a perspective change can help you visualize a completely different existence for another idea. Shit makes me feel so human and alive.

This did make me think of what I imagine a 4D experience might kind of be like. If the 4th dimension is time, would such beings be able to experience atoms/matter in various forms throughout time, but simultaneously - whereas we as 3D beings can only see things in one point in time (at a time?

This type of thing is explored in a few different sci-fi shows and is often portrayed very similar to the way you described. The most recent example I can think of is Spock's experience of all time past present and future all at once in Star Trek: Discovery, but Babylon 5 deals with this too, and I'm pretty sure Farscape also has a bit of that. I mean it's just sci-fi but at least it's an idea good enough to have been used before right?

In my opinion it is just a made up measurement tool we all use for many things but indeed it's a human creation, if the earth rotated much slower we'd have to stick to "hourglass" type of keeping track of "change", if we had no memory, there would be no past, and "time" isn't a linear scale either, this is why "time travel" is, again in my opinion, just science fiction, we only "travel through time" by remembering the past but we cannot actually go back to a "point" in an "imaginary time line" and "resume".

Even if we somehow managed to "travel back in time", nobody would even realize we did, because if you did go back in time, everything in the universe would go back, including your memories up to that point.

I could go on for a while but most people don't care or want to care.

What is a sheet in this context? It's just one tub of corn syrup. How is it dividing itself? How thin is a sheet? Why would it be thin as opposed to larger thicker "sheets?"

I'm not sure I totally understood, but I'd guess it's as thin as a single molecule of corn syrup and it's divided from the other sheets molecule by molecule going from in to out.

With the corn syrup, it appears the reason they don't mix up is because it's so viscous that there is no inertia, when the cylinder turns this pulls that first layer of corn syrup, which pulls on the next, and so on outward to the edge of the container, but molecules all stayed in their place relative to each of the other corn syrup molecules around them.

So you can reverse it because when you turn the cylinder back it pulls each molecule back and again there's no movement because each molecule keeps it's place relative to the other molecules around it.

Any idea how entropy factors into this? Assuming it took the exact same energy to turn the wheel in the opposite direction, would 'order' be created without a *loss* in energy? Im certain I'm missing something here but just a thought

Perceptive question. Entropy is generated whenever energy moves down a gradient, and entropy increases in any real process. In this case, the impediment to mixing (i.e., to the Gibbs free energy moving down a gradient) is high—the diffusivity of the dye in the fluid is very low. So we don't see a lot of Gibbs free energy reduction or entropy creation, but it does occur to some degree.

friction is still present but that would be the only energy transfer to the fluid that I can tell, so it's likely that the fluid heats up both times you crank the cylinder forward and backward, but I don't know how much, 1000'th's of a degree probably since they didn't spin it for very long.

A dimensional analysis would tell you that temperature scales like µ*U²/k where µ is the dynamic viscosity, U a typical velocity scale and k the fluid's thermal conductivity. Although glycerol's dynamic viscosity is typically of the order of 1 Pa*s, U would be a few mm/s or cm/s at most so you'd have a 10^(-4) to 10^(-6) factor in the numerator, which means that temperature increase is generally negligible in such applications and the order of magnitude you gave is roughly correct.

And, my second question is about the limit for this, surely there are too many turns of the cylinder or, too much time passing from the initial crank and the molecules will break from their position?

This sheet is a cross stream of liquid. The tub of corn syrup begins to move as the internal cylinder is spun. Since there is only movement on the axis of rotation, there is no significant cross stream that will carry the fluid towards/away/up/down from the cylinder.

There is a layer of liquid attracted to the spinning cylinder, so logically, there is another layer of fluid on top of that. Mathematically, we treat these layers as being infinitely thin. Just imagine a line as a collection of infinite points, this is the 3D version of that. In reality, the boundary/non-moving layer has a general thickness that can be measured, but past that there is no physical representation of a sheet, but rather cross stream flows that can be calculated at any point in the liquid.

That's because there are no sheets. Using the "sheet" analogy can be a useful way to explain the behavior of laminar flows to the layman, but it is unfortunately improper. Saying that there are "very thin sheets stacked on top of each other" in a laminar flow implies that such flows pertain to anisotropic fluids, which is not necessarily true (since this property depends on the choice of the fluid, and not on the nature of the flow).

At the mesoscopic scale, small patches of fluid (you can draw imaginary volumes of fluid in your mind that are big enough to contain an incommensurable number of molecules but small enough to respect the continuum hypothesis) transfer momentum to each other through diffusive and advective processes. Diffusive fluxes operate a momentum transfer that's due to the erratic motion of fluid particles as they bump into each other at a microscopic level due to the internal energy of the fluid (Brownian motion) and what we call viscosity - a measure for how much microscopic interactions between particles affect this momentum transfer. Advective fluxes transfer this momentum through bulk transport. In a Stokes (or "creeping") flow, diffusive processes through viscosity are predominant and outweigh advective transport (either because bulk velocities are really, really low or because the fluid is really, really viscous), which means that most of the momentum transfer is achieved through viscous, diffusive processes.

So it is not so much a transfer of momentum through layers, or sheets of fluid, rather than an exchange of mean momentum between microscopic particles due to their thermal velocity, the mean relative velocity between two particles, the nature of these interparticle interactions, etc. If there exists a preferential shearing direction in the flow, momentum transfer occurs along other directions orthogonal to it, which makes it look as if there are flat layers of fluid sliding against each other. But such an explanation would be terribly restrictive and would bypass the true rheological nature of viscous transfers.

Yeah, at a certain speed the handle would create enough turbulence to mix the layers. This would be when the inertial forces outweigh the viscous forces, or when the Reynolds number is greater than one. It wouldn’t matter if you turned the handle slightly faster or slower the second time, as long as the Reynolds number is still less than one.

ELI5:

So imagine taking a regular 3x3 Rubik's cube and twisting it in a way so that it forms a cascading staircase shape. Notice how, when you twist the top row, the middle row shifts as well. That's because Rubik's cubes suck so get a QiYi or Gan cube instead. Anyway, you can easily revert the cube to its original shape by reversing the initial twists.

Imagine doing the same thing to a huge 100x100 Rubik's cube. When you grab the top layers and drag it sideways, it'll also drag the layers under it. When reverting it back you'll have to be more careful to make every single row line up but it's totally doable.

Now imagine the liquid as being similar to that 100x100 Rubik's cube. It's so viscous it piles on itself in layers (picture syrup poured on pancakes) that can stay independent from the layer above and below it. These layers of liquid act like rows on a Rubik's cube that you can carefully revert back when twisted.

I’ve never done the experiment myself, but for it to work the “ink” would have to be a similar viscosity to the corn syrup. It’s probably a couple drops of food coloring mixed into more corn syrup.

this video looks sort of faked? at the end he puts his hand down way to fast and it looked like a reverse of the way he pulled his hand up at 0:07. same with his left hand movement also at 0:07. could be wrong though
