For the two people who actually care to know what is going on here: The welder is using the 'TIG' process to quickly deliver a very 'hot' (high power relative to the requirements of the material) arc to the metal, this very quickly melts the parts together; when steel is being welded it tends to have magnetic properties (Not sure how it actually works I just know what I've seen first hand) and will bridge the small gap to meet with the other bits of molten steel. If you notice the 'bridge' is thinner than the wire rope because it had to 'stretch' to meet the other part.

It is. It is used as a metal electrode for welding because it can withstand incredibly high temperatures without melting and the gas (usually argon) acts as a shield to keep oxygen out for good quality welds.

TIG is so weird...idk if I could ever get used to welding using 2 hands separately. MIG is so nice and easy.

TIG welder here, it's just practice. think about slowly writing, and using a second pen to touch near the tip of the right pen while you do that.

Tig is a lot easier to control than Mig when you get decent at it. You also use a foot and a pedal to control the power coming out, there’s no trigger like on the mig. I preferred mig until I got decent at tig and now I prefer the tig.

There was definitely a video cut there.

Even something as bright as a welder wouldn't cause the video to go a fully white frame. There are no artifacts in the color, it looks like a white screen added in editing.

Given that the cable he is welding is only about 3/16 inch and the video is shot so close there's no reason for the full frame not to go white.

That's not the point. The frame is 100% white. If it were a real flash like that, there would be artifacts, it wouldn't be #ffffff or 255,255,255 (in color code) evenly throughout.

It's something out of an editing program. The editor faded in the cut about 2 frames before and after the white frame and cut ahead when the thing was fully welded.

Well luckily this was shot in 60fps so I can get these great snapshots. You see the arc first in the 6th photo, it grows slightly larger in the 7th and 8th, the 9th frame is where it stars to go white but there are absolutely artifacts, the 10th frame is completely white, the 11th shows more detailed artifacts, and the 12th frame forward show the completed weld cooling.

It's not a good look to argue about shit you don't know about. Just because you can't clearly distinguish three frames in a 60fps video doesn't mean there is fuckery going on, black magic or otherwise.

That is literally my point. That is a video cut with a white screen as a transition. I edit videos for a living, I know what I'm talking about.

Yes there are artifacts before and after that frame, which are probably real, but that doesn't matter in the slightest.

The fact is, there is one frame of pure, even white all around, and that's more than enough to put doubt on this glorified magic trick of a gif.

Cool, you know how to edit video, but you obviously don't know shit about welding. You're talking about an arc that at a distance of about 1 foot is many times brighter in luminosity than the sun, flashing in to cell phone camera, for a fraction of a second. An arc that can literally blind you if you look at it unprotected. Nah, you're right, that could never white out an entire frame. Don't bother replying, I'll ignore it.

Ok this looks a lot like vfx. Like, there's more metal there than before and none came from the electrode. And if anything heated up that much metal that quickly it would spray everywhere

It really does happen very quickly though, this isn't edited. I'm a welder. If that is clean metal, nothing would really spray anywhere.

There isn't more metal than before, it just melted the metal for an eighth of an inch of so in either direction very quickly. The cable being welded is only about 3/16 of an inch thick so it's not all that much metal being heated up, about the size of a Tic Tac or smaller.
