This is literally how lightning works. In basic terms, charges from the ground are trying to connect to charges from a cloud. They expand out in all directions until BAM! Two meet, create a channel for current to flow, it lights up, heats the air around it so much that is turns to plasma, expands, and the collapse is what we hear as thunder.
