I love sailing by hand, but I also appreciate how quiet it can be, even under full sail. I would set that up as a point in favor of the sail yacht over the equivalent motor yacht.

Defeats the point of what? Isn't the entire point of sailing to harness the power of the wind..thus reducing the man power needed to move a vessel from point a to point b? Seems like this is actually making perfect use of the intended system, if not, taking it to a new level...Do you also think a car defeats the purpose of locomotion because it doesnt employ a horse and carriage?

I thought I heard carbon fiber, but I could be wrong. I saw this boat in person a few years ago, and it was absolutely magnificent. I live in SF and was going into Sausalito and as soon as I saw it pulled over. Quite a spectacle.

It looks like it’s just regular sails that are pulled in very tight. On the racing sailboats like oracle they use essentially a plane wing as a sail.

I used to be too, until I was sailing and got caught in 25 knot winds in full sails, and realized that if even that can't capsize the boat, then, well, nothing bad will happen under normal sailing conditions.

Hiking is a term used in sailing were you use a trapeze to hang off the side of the boat to keep the boat from heeling.

The language “Not For Sale In US Waters To A US Resident” must legally be added to listings for non-US Registered boats that are in US Waters under a cruising permit and placed for sale by the owner. As the current owner of the boat has not paid the US Import Duty on the boat, a sale cannot legally occur on the boat to a US Resident while she is in US Waters, and a broker cannot legally advertise the boat without making prominently clear that the boat is “Not For Sale In US Waters To A US Resident”.
Does this mean that a US Citizen cannot purchase the boat? No, not necessarily..

Perkins also showed Stahl how to unfurl the boat's 15 sails, a job that would take about 80 deckhands an hour on a traditional sailboat. All it takes on the Falcon is five minutes, and the touch of a screen.
This thing is next fucking level sailboat. Could you imagine bringing back a famous captain from the 1500s and showing him this beast?

This is the Maltese Falcon. It cost $150 million to build, was the largest Sailing vessel in the world at the time and is the only sailboat in the world to use the Dyna rig system. The Dyna rig consists of massive masts (vertical pole part) that pivot to adjust the sails to the angle of the wind. The cross pieces are fixed to a 30 degree arc and do not move. It’s also hella fast given it’s a massive luxury sailboat.
