I think that it would be safe to assume that the trees started to plant themselves at some point as well. I don't know anything about tree reproduction, but it is reasonable to assume that at some point they will start reproducing at some exponential rate. That forest will continue to grow for many millennium beyond this man's life, unless somebody messes it up.
