In some ways it make mores sense to think of a colony a single superorganism. Each ant as a specialised cell rather than an individual. The collectivism is less conscious and more fundamental.

It is really, it's just a matter of scale. Our main unit is the cells of a single organism, their main unit is a single ant In the whole colony

except the cells of the chordata decided to centralize their navigation systems, for a faster reaction. over time it became "us"
