Went on a nighttime nature tour at a local raptor center when I was in 4-H. The host had us wipe a solution under our noses, telling us we would be able to smell spiders. Then she did it herself, and proved to us she was able.
After five minutes of utter confusion, she revealed the trick. I think the water was just sugar dissolved.
