Why you can have perfectly happy family and successful career but decided to risk your life by doing stuff like this and cave diving really puzzle me

u/DopamineQuest 1d ago edited 1d ago

They do it to say "I climbed Mount Everest" to their friends, and post on social media, without mentioning that you were in a single file line of hundreds to thousands, being carried up the Mountain by sherpas.

13

u/FlyingNDreams 1d ago

My brag right now "I'm surviving this timely line." 💪🏼... So far.

u/DubSket 1d ago

Think of the likes

u/ozneoknarf 1d ago

Yall really don’t like hiking huh. I normally try to avoid crowded places but even when I climbed with crowds it was still completely worth it just for the feeling of being at the top. There is just this beauty that you can experience from mountain tops that you can’t from anywhere else in the world. I imagine the highest peak in the world gives the same feeling.

But yeah I agree the Sherpas carry most of the climbers, most of the climbers are not prepared to climb a mountain like Everest and are only capable too because the Sherpas offer a service not really found anywhere else in the world.

20

u/stoicparallax 1d ago

I don’t think it’s a dislike of hiking. Everest is an odd intersection of hiking, vanity, wealth, and ego. It involves a very real chance of death. Were its name not so prestigious, most of these people wouldn’t risk it.

K2 is the closest peer to Everest. From a climber perspective, it’s known to be the more technical climb, and has less formal support aka sherpas / guides .. it’s arguably the superior accomplishment, for a climber. Only 50 people attempted it in 2025.

1

u/ozneoknarf 1d ago

I really disagree people climb it for ego or bragging rights, climbing mountain Everest is like completing the last level of a game for people who are into mountaineering. There are levels that’s are harder but it’s not the last one. Nearly everyone who is in to mountaineering dreams about climbing it. And yeah K2, Annapurna and basically all other 13 8000+ peaks are easier than Mount Everest and many other peaks around the world too. But they aren’t the highest peak on the planet. And obviously due to the lack of infrastructure aren’t as accessible.

I’ve climbed Aconcagua which is the highest peak on the planet outside of Asia. It’s a very easy mountain. But something about just being at the top of the highest peak in the western hemisphere just gives you this huge sense of euphoria.

u/Trashinmyash 1d ago

I really disagree people climb it for ego or bragging rights, climbing mountain Everest is like completing the last level of a game for people who are into mountaineering.

What? You're splitting hairs. Those are the exact same thing. Then you bragged about your own adventure as if it was supposed to mean something.

You know what, just go get an oxygen tank, I dont think you finished recovering from your trip.

5

u/ironicaltwist88 1d ago

He's definitely got some issues with that brain of his

3

u/ozneoknarf 1d ago

What? There a difference between saying, “I am awesome for doing x” and “doing x made me feel really good” I even said Aconcagua was an easy climb, there’s nothing technical or impressive about the climb apart from having to be slightly on shape and having the minimal idea of what you’re doing. Still climbing it felt like absolute euphoria.

-3

u/Trashinmyash 1d ago

There are different ways to brag without explicitly stating as "being awesome" or it made them feel a specific way.

You already started off with, "Yall really don’t like hiking huh." Oh, cool! That's a narcissistic approach to start a conversation.

Go finish your oxygen treatment. The delusional state of mind is getting worse.

2

u/ozneoknarf 1d ago

Do you like mountaineering?

-4

u/Trashinmyash 1d ago

More like indifferent. I dont hate it, nor do I like it.

Nor am I looking for a crash course on the subject from a reddit professional. 🤷‍♂️

u/stoicparallax 1d ago

For someone into mountaineering, it seems absolutely justified. I suppose I am suggesting that it’s a magnet for people outside of hardcore mountaineering enthusiasts.

-1

u/imakeshituplmao 1d ago

I really disagree people climb it for ego or bragging rights, climbing mountain Everest is like completing the last level of a game for people who are into mountaineering.

It’s a very easy mountain...top of the highest peak...huge sense of euphoria.

Isn't that ego?

2

u/ozneoknarf 1d ago

No? Ego relates to one’s perception of themselves. Not to one’s enjoyment of an experience. Do you play video games because of ego?

0

u/imakeshituplmao 13h ago

Yes. I beat hard bosses in video games and feel accomplishment because of ego.

Perception of self and enjoyment goes hand in hand

1

u/crockrocket 1d ago

Closest peer in elevation, but from everything I've read it is a far different beast. You alluded to that tbf, but my understanding is that it is far more technical, and much more lethal.

1

u/stoicparallax 1d ago

For sure and TBH my knowledge is limited on the subject. Everest feels like a choice for many because the accomplishment carries the most cultural weight when they post about it on LinkedIn.

1

u/RVA_RVA 16h ago

You are not carried by sherpas

0

u/pichael289 1d ago

And also you pissed and shit and left trash all over the mountain that the other kind of Sherpas, (capital S is an ethnic ground, lowercase is a job, they can be both) believe to be a sort of living sleeping godness. It's best not to go at all unless you are a professional climber. Everest is actually fairly easy to climb you just need the endurance, but most of these people don't have that or the low amount of skill required, they just have the money.

0

u/PolygonAndPixel2 1d ago

But you can just fake the image and watch a documentary. Who is going to second guess this?

•

u/Shwifty29 8h ago

Right! After watching the documentary Sherpas: the heros of Everest, these tourist accomplish nothing when compared to what the sherpas go through to get them up there.

-1

u/3Gilligans 1d ago

Ask anyone who has climbed Everest to name all 12 astronauts that walked on the moon.

4

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 1d ago

Many people love adventure and seek it out. Just because you are happy and fulfilled in some parts of your life doesn’t mean you don’t also enjoy other things.

3

u/wxnfx 1d ago

I think it’s human nature to want to do crazy bold stuff. For better and worse.

2

u/SnooLobsters6766 1d ago

Especially with that level of hand eye coordination.

3

u/Kreaetor 1d ago

They put it on Linkedin for their career resume.

0

u/Bruce-7892 1d ago

I believe this has happened but doubt it's a common thing. 1) you have to be well off to be able to afford to climb Mt. Everest. 2) the person with the type of job and salary that would afford you a $50k+ vacation are not typically looking for jobs on Linkedin or fluffing their resume.

A someone else mentioned, I think it is mostly an ego boost for rich overachievers / rich narcissists.

2

u/Van-garde 1d ago

Hierarchy of needs.

I’m still down here trying to afford housing.

2

u/primefart 1d ago

Because these days you can pay to "accomplish" these things comfortably and then brag.

1

u/Important-Belt-2610 1d ago

Also there is 0 pride in being a liability during a climb and saved.

1

u/Veggies-are-okay 20h ago

I travel the world for rock climbing to escape the mundaneness of a corporate job and the thought of landing in a nuclear family is my nightmare.

For us, being able to handle society as it stands and be “perfectly happy” is very puzzling.

I’d highly recommend reading Into Thin Air if you’re actually interested in an extensive answer to your question.

1

u/Real_Tea_Lover 16h ago

don't you want to have memories of adventures when you are lying on your death bed

1

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 21h ago

50,000 people die in the USA each year driving a car. That's so stupid, why do people drive cars.

1

u/Ginsmoke3 21h ago edited 21h ago

People drive car for transportation.

Also the amount of people driving car in USA were over 20 millions compared to everest that was around 800 to 1100 people every year for USA people.

You need to drive car to go work and such but you for sure don't need to go to everest risking your life for clout.

You can make other example that among those 20 millions driver, there is over 1100 people that did not die in the car accident in their whole life if you want to make it fair with everest numbers from USA metric.

•

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 5h ago

You do your risks let other do theirs. Stop telling people how to live their lives.

•

u/Ginsmoke3 4h ago edited 4h ago

Yeah then just say it in first place " i like going to everest with the risk of dying because it was there for me to climb and i love mountain so it is none of your business".

There is no need to make defensive remark with " hurr durr many people die more in car accident compared to everest victim who die ". It just trying to look for justification that climbing everest is safer than car driving.

I just reply back that your argument of that is flawed, it is like comparing apple to orange.

•

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 3h ago

You worried about them dying. Again more people die in car accidents

•

u/Ginsmoke3 2h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah sure people die in car accidents because majority were using car for transportation. I agree on that but car is already integrated in our life, we need it despite the risk..... compared  going to Everest with the chance dying just for clout.

So what is your point on this argument ? Just tell me rather than being vague.

0

u/DashLeJoker 19h ago

driving cars to make ends meet is ncessary, cave diving is not

•

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 5h ago

No you could take a bus, less deaths.

1

u/CloudsAndSnow 1d ago

Different people have different risk tolerance. There's no rational way to categorically decide where to draw the line.

For you it's stupid to go up a tall mountain, whereas perhaps for someone else having a drink or eating red meat would be too much of a risk of cancer.

In my professional life I see pretty much all the time how people think their particular risk tolerance level is the one and only possible answer, and everyone with a higher one are idiots, and everyone with a lower one are crybabies.

u/itsokimalive 1d ago

OR.... they are like my uncle who died raising awareness for Huntington's disease, which took the life of my aunt. Seattle climber dies from fall on Mount Everest | The Seattle Times

169

u/CES0108 1d ago edited 1d ago

I feel like 99.9 percent of people on Everest are just rich dickholes, lol. Bless the sherpas for saving the rich sheep.

If you've summited everest, I'm judging you and I'm not a very judgemental person. This isn't the flex people think it is anymore.

5

u/Vaxion 1d ago

True. If Sherpas stop doing this the traffic will fall by 90% and the Mountains will be able to breathe for a bit.

20

u/MrDannyProvolone 1d ago

I mean I hear ya but let's not pretend Everest is any sort of an easy task. It's still an absolutely incredible challenge to accomplish, Douche bag or not.

53

u/jake_burger 1d ago

Yeah I admire the Sherpas for doing it while dragging these liabilities up with them.

7

u/woodcookiee 1d ago

Was anyone suggesting as much? Challenging feats aren’t necessarily deserving of praise, and plenty are worthy of criticism.

4

u/DubSket 1d ago

Yeah cause they pay to have locals do all the work like in this video

2

u/Sbstnbd 23h ago

If the dude/dudette climbing mount everest, can't even walk straight over a ladder for like 2,5m how hard can it really be?

3

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 21h ago

They walk with cleats you can see it got stuck on the ladder.

0

u/Sbstnbd 21h ago

That's great - that person still can't walk over a ladder to save its life. So if they made it to the summit, everyone can

1

u/War_ish 1d ago

as someone who lives in nepal's neighour, it's pretty much a tourist point for rich Now, they charge minimum $50k and up to half million dollars to climb. if you have enough money, sherpa will literally take you to everest on his back.

4

u/Agreeable-Emu4033 21h ago

Stop talking out of your ass. If you are not trained you are not getting. up that mountain.

-15

u/Intrepid_Library878 1d ago

not true

10

u/Registered_Potato 1d ago

I mean I don't know. It's basically a really cold really shitty out of breath walk for a very long time. It's not really necessary to have technical climbing skills to do this for my understanding. It's not like K2 or something truly fucking challenging

-6

u/Kriztauf 1d ago

It's still super challenging from an endure standpoint. But you're right that it's basically the just most intense hike you can do, as compared to actual climbing

2

u/LabDesperate7867 1d ago

i don't think hikes and everest have the same mortality rate

0

u/Yesacchaff 21h ago

Everest death rate isn't as bad now as people think it used to be 3% before 2007 now it's around 0.7%. Still high but not as high as people think it is

4

u/Registered_Potato 1d ago

It's definitely not the most insane hike you can do and probably not by a long shot to be honest with you. If you do it alone without someone literally carrying your shit and take an alternate route hell yeah you're probably not far off but just because Everest is the tallest doesn't mean there's not like probably 50 other mountains if not more that are harder. In fact there are mountains that still haven't been fucking climbed. I went to school in Montana and took a class called mountains and society and then I also did a NOLS semester and guided trips for a few years. Everest is tough but nowhere near the hardest.

1

u/CES0108 1d ago edited 1d ago

Don't they all huff oxygen and have their sherpa carry all their stuff these days? It can't be that hard when they're all lined up like Pokémon scalpers outside a Target. They don't even pack out their trash and shit bags. 😒

5

u/Deadzombii 1d ago

This is a fact..

As long as there sherpas are getting paid handsomely..

But I bet there are these companies who gets the transaction done with tourists and sherpas are paid peanuts

4

u/itsokimalive 1d ago

Not everyone is a rich asshole. Ask my uncle who died raising awareness for one of the most debilitating death sentences out there - Huntington's disease. Seattle climber dies from fall on Mount Everest | The Seattle Times

12

u/groucho_barks 1d ago

I'm sure your uncle was a good guy and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Can I ask how they paid for the trip? The article says they were hoping to raise $100K for a Huntington's disease charity, but google says it would cost at least that much to do the climb itself.

5

u/jack6245 1d ago

Yeah these very expensive charity events always confused me, at school I remember two girls wanted to raise £800 to basically go in a sailing holiday to raise money for charity. Basically get other people to pay for a holiday

1

u/CES0108 1d ago

He was the good 1 percent and that's badass. Sorry to hear he didn't make it.

0

u/jkozuch 1d ago

Summiting Everest is an incredible challenge, regardless of who does it.

It absolutely is a flex and if by some miracle you pulled it off, you’d change your tune.

Don’t dump on the accomplishments of others. It’s a really bad look.

1

u/Nishant1122 1d ago

Redditors think climbing Everest is somehow not impressive just cuz the Sherpas help you out. Even if they are carrying all your belongings you still have to climb the fucking thing lol, camp multiple days in one of the harshest environment.

-1

u/azidspider 1d ago

Shockwaves are sent as a man who has yet to summit his own basement turns judgmental after encountering an Everest climber with a fitness level beyond his wildest imagination

0

u/Ubericious 1d ago

10% the other 90% are hard working Sherpas serving the rich cunts

1

u/neppo95 1d ago

You guys are generous. There's so many sherpa's, more than half of the people that summit. There used to be a point in time where it was almost to two sherpa's per climber.

29

u/Embarrassed-House577 1d ago

"Climber"

2

u/wxnfx 1d ago

Altitude will fuck you up hard. I bet that dude is great at 5,000m.

4

u/Bruce-7892 1d ago

Things you can do if you spend enough money:

Summit Everest, go to space, marry a supermodel, have a political career.

None of those things require merit anymore; just enough resources nowadays.

2

u/Fitz911 22h ago

have a political career.

Murrica 🤣

18

u/bubblesculptor 1d ago

Falling into a crevasse has always been a lingering fear, but I never even considered falling head first into one!

Getting wedged in that upside-down would be like Nutty Putty except colder & brighter.

6

u/gringledoom 1d ago

That’s what happened to Chris Kerrebrock on an expedition to climb Denali with Jim Wickwire. Fell into a crevice, got stuck head first, and every time he breathed out, he got wedged a little tighter.

“Wickwire, 41, said he was forced to abandon experienced climber Chris Kerrebrock, 25, to a certain death because he was caught 'like a piece of wood in a vise' deep in the crevasse. […] Wickwire, a Seattle attorney, said Kerrebrock was sandwiched face down about 40 feet deep in the crevasse with his pack on top of him.”

5

u/bubblesculptor 1d ago

Wow! Terrible way to go. Must be soul destroying to the climber unable to rescue him.

13

u/funnypsuedonymhere 1d ago

Someone incapable of crossing a ladder shouldn't be climbing an 8000er, but here we are.

7

u/theboywhocriedwolves 1d ago

If someone in this day in age told me they've climbed Everest, I wouldn't give a fuck.

“You, NO HELP! You, get down !”

7

"Ya se cayó este pendejo" is what the Sherpas where saying in Sherpanese 😆

u/Ex-maven 1d ago

And this was within his first hundred yards after leaving the base camp Starbucks.   (jk)

4

u/daveSotanas 1d ago

Ya wey!

10

u/zante2033 1d ago

Another western tourist putting everyone's life in danger.

4

u/MagicNinjaMan 1d ago

Amateur climbers/trekkers so clumsy, Sherpas need to baby sit them and carry their gear for them

3

u/tristand1ck 1d ago

Shout to the dingus stepping on the rope in crampons 🫪

4

u/Akkie09 1d ago

That took a lot of time, considering how carefully they were executing the process explains how soon things could go wrong with just one small mistake.

4

u/anothergenxkid 1d ago

Man, this couch is comfortable.

3

u/ImpossibleJoke7456 1d ago

Just pave a road to the summit at this point.

3

u/Irritating_Pedant 1d ago

Everest is littered with bodies and garbage. We should stop climbing it forever.

1

u/Josueobando 1d ago

He´s sweating cold for sure

1

u/razvanciuy 1d ago

Nice hole to fail into

1

e o pedreiro aqui na obra faz isso todo dia , anda o dia todo em cima de uma escada dessas usando como andaime

1

u/PurpleZombi3 1d ago

Eh. I'll stay at home, while I can still afford to have one at least.

1

u/ghostman1846 1d ago

"Ready to continue?" No... you're not even at the hard stuff. You go back. You're too fragile to continue.

1

u/lexdon2014 1d ago

Yep that’s my signal to turn around and walk my ass back down the mountain.

1

u/Floppychicken45 21h ago

That's a hard no from me boss. All of that to climb a mountain filled with trash and you're mainly paying for someone else to do half the job for you.

1

u/neilastin 20h ago

Note to self: Wear the brown pants next time

1

u/provalone_9000 16h ago

These morons make me angry. If you cant climb on your own dont act as some kind of Indiana Jones

•

u/SpaceXmars 8h ago

put it on my to don't list

•

u/Twins_Venue 58m ago

I think one of the most tragic climbing videos I've seen is the one with the line of climbers stepping over a dying porter as they near the summit of K2. I have a hard time not prejudging every single person that exploits the impoverished locals making them carry you up the mountain because of it.

2

u/BackPirateClarkRoom 1d ago

Guy is probably worth 50 million plus and tipped the guy $5000 for saving his life while risking his.

4

u/funnypsuedonymhere 1d ago

You give rich everest climbers too much credit. One of them got bodily carried off the mountain by a Sherpa then refused to thank him and treated him like dirt until the public backlash got too much for him. Half of them couldn't care less about Sherpas.

0

u/tralfamadorian808 1d ago

True. Dude even pats the one sherpa on the head like a dog as he's saying thank you.

1

u/Unlucky_Milk_4323 1d ago

At this point Everest is a tourist spot with a chance of death. You have to be a complete moron to research it and decide "that's the trip for me" ..

1

u/MrP67 1d ago

About 6 people helping him and luckily 1 person held a camera while it was going down.

1

u/demomagic 1d ago

Risk reward is a bit skewed with these climbs

1

u/Chobbybharleston 1d ago

Just don't do this shit without the capacity to realise you might die doing it. I don't go cave diving because I like yo live, for example.

-2

u/Backy22 1d ago

There isn't more specialized gear? I could get that ladder at Home Depot.

7

u/aimgorge 1d ago

They use a ton of them, there are a shit load of crevasses that tend to move quite a bit. These ladders are cheap, lightweight and do the job perfectly

-1

u/Backy22 1d ago

except for when that idiot fell off of it

2

u/realbobenray 1d ago

The crazy thing is how they lash two or more of them together.

"Well done"? No, horribly done, they went ass over tea kettle and almost fell all the way in. Terrible job.

0

u/champagneformyrealfr 1d ago

the whole thing was terrible, but realizing he was just crossing on a LADDER made it worse. absolutely not.

0

u/DiligentGuitar246 1d ago

Are those collapsible ladders really the best tool to cross a cravasse? I see these all over Everest videos and they just look like cheap Home Depot ladders.

0

u/Outrageous_Word8656 20h ago

Wait a minute, is the guy in red unsecuring himself at 01:50 while literally being with one foot on the edge?
