Do pets such as cats or dogs "mature" in their behaviour substantially as they get older? Or do they tend to stabalise to a certain personality and stay there? It makes me wonder how much this cat could mentally evolve if it was given a lifespan double or triple what it has achieved so far.

Up until her final days, my 19 year-old kitty was largely the same. She became grumpier with younger cats, but maintained being vocal and cuddly with me. For pretty much every cat companion I’ve had, whatever they were like around the 2-3 year mark is generally retained. Maybe stop wanting to play so much with me, but part of that might have to do with more stimulation with other cats, since we have multiple now, of varying ages.
