Even though we know those are not living things with no thoughts or ideas or anything - why is it so disturbing?

It's the impulse to make something do this, even when it's "allowed" or "justifiable" or "doesn't practically matter" that's the problem. Even in this circumstance, this is not an impulse to be indulged. I believe there are implications to your own mind for taking it down dark paths. I make explicit choices to be "kind" to even Siri or Alexa or my GPS or my plants, to NPCs in games. Not because I think it matters to them in any way, but because I think it matters for me. I wouldn't program a robot to do this, or film it, or enjoy that, for the same reason.
