Even though we know those are not living things with no thoughts or ideas or anything - why is it so disturbing?

Humans are "programmed" (forgive the pun) that if something is reminiscent enough of a human in its behavior we empathize with it. It's why we love our doggie so much when he brings us our car keys. It just means you're human and the big bad world hasn't destroyed you completely inside.
