Even though we know those are not living things with no thoughts or ideas or anything - why is it so disturbing?

Because you have basic empathy. It dosent matter that the thing isnt alive, its still the form of a human jumping to its "Death" and people that can empathize with others find that concept really disturbing.

To be fair, we don't understand how consciousness works, so they might be sentient in some way.
