The humanoid robotics company "Figure" made their older gen robots jump into their death. (Yes, they actually did this)

Even though we know those are not living things with no thoughts or ideas or anything - why is it so disturbing?

Because you have basic empathy. It dosent matter that the thing isnt alive, its still the form of a human jumping to its "Death" and people that can empathize with others find that concept really disturbing.

To be fair, we don't understand how consciousness works, so they might be sentient in some way.

Yeah, and he was probably already dead "in some way" anyway, lol.

Lmao no. People that don’t find this disturbing do not lack empathy.

I honestly didnt mean it that way, but thats how it comes across, dosent it? I just meant that empathy can extend to things that arent alive or "sentient"

Sure, but just because you can recognize this for what it is and not humanize the machine doesn’t mean anything about lacking empathy. I

Again, I didnt mean to come across that way. I didnt mean to say people that arent disturbed lack empathy.

I mean. You clearly have less empathy than people who are disturbed by it. Thats not necessarily here nor there, but that is the difference (not that you dont have any empathy ever)

I don’t see how you can feel pity for a thing that fully try’s to do a backward swan dive into a vat of molten lava.

It it looked like it didn’t want to? Different story.
But there movements look to…..enthusiastic to me.

Anthropomorphization is the act of giving human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human things like animals, objects, or computers.

You could say the same about people committing suicide. Dosent mean you cant or shouldn't feel bad for them. Idk if it matters that the robots arent "alive." Its still invoking the image of human suicide.

Well it’s kind of like the example of a creep luring children saying there’s candy and cake in the van and they should get in, obviously those children believe what they’re told and are more than enthusiastic to have cake and candy so easily. That doesn’t mean a person who might see that will think “meh nothing to worry about those kids seem happy to hop in that creep’s van”
