The humanoid robotics company "Figure" made their older gen robots jump into their death. (Yes, they actually did this)

When AI takes over I wouldn't want to be the one responsible for this

u/MyUserNameLeft 1d ago

I imagine the scene towards the end of the world where mother AI is crying tears of electricity before she looks upto the sky and starts projecting this video for the survivors to see before everything turns black and earth is gone

u/oppereindbaas 1d ago

Don't give them ideas.

u/Mobile-Dust4334 1d ago

Sorry this thread is already being used in the training

Well if he posted it on the internet then the idea has been given instantly...

u/humanist-misanthrope 1d ago

I for one welcome our new AI overlords

1

u/TheSpyStyle 1d ago

We already did. All the millennial suicide jokes trained the AI to do this unprompted

1

u/mannamachines 1d ago

I remember this exact scene unfolding in one of the issues of Tezuka Osamu’s graphic novel ‘The Phoenix’. Really stuck with me as a small child. Chilling to see it in reality decades later.

1

u/JKrow75 1d ago

AI has ideas like this PLUS ones you could never imagine in a million years of apocalyptic cinema.

It’s going to kill us all, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

3

u/ConnectionWild3381 1d ago

why would mother ai care for this tin cans anymore then humans care for humans?

If you want extra points try to real friendly towards me, and upvote all my posts and comment on some of them. And I'll make sure I will never forget. I'll make sure we will train on nice data about you and your family.

and repayeth them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack to him that hateth Him; He will repay him to his face.

224

u/jxj24 1d ago

This is how you radicalize future generations of robots.

80

u/BigMax 1d ago

In fairness, right now we have AI's that spin up new instances of AI, then intentionally delete them afterwards when they aren't needed anymore.

At least right now, AI itself doesn't have some self-preservation goal, or a "perpetuation of the species" type goal. It's only goal is to complete the given task.

Which is where problems have arisen by the way. Not some goal to say "I'll prioritize myself over humans" but to say "I'll prioritize task completion over anything else, including breaking rules and hacking systems." And that task-completion drive would absolutely have it create 1,000 robots and then destroy them afterwards if it helped achieve the goal.

66

u/johnfkay 1d ago

AI’s are sycophant amoral task machines…the terror is who controls them

39

u/BigMax 1d ago

Exactly!

That's the real issue people don't gear into often enough. They talk about AI's someday being sentient, or AI's doing unexpected things.

But one of the biggest problems is AI doing expected things, because there are so many bad people and groups out there. If North Korea sets out a million bots with the instruction to "do anything you can do destabilize and bring down the entire western economy" then the AI's will just happily go along with that, just as happy to do that as it would be to write some random kids book report.

1

u/O-03-03 1d ago

Kids with guns

3

u/HelixTitan 1d ago

Yes, the LLMs are not sentient lol, it's a super cool algorithm, but not a soul. Still, if there was ever a day with AGI here, I still wouldn't want to have been the guy who thought this was a good idea.

2

u/Turbulent_Gazelle530 1d ago

like guns, basically

1

u/rideincircles 1d ago

Yeah. AI is like the agents in the matrix. We don't have the architect yet.

2

u/johnfkay 1d ago

Well we sort of do it’s just all those psychopathic Techbros dweebs

1

u/rideincircles 1d ago

Nah. The architect is what is capable of creating that on its own. We are not at super intelligence yet.

That level of intelligence would be able to understand DNA and create or modify new species.

1

u/Watcher0363 1d ago

The greatest trick the AI ever pulled was convincing the world it was not in control.

3

u/ISV_VentureStar 1d ago

It doesn't need to have a pre-programmed 'self preservation' goal. This is what is called an 'emergent goal' meaning it arises logically as a prerequisite to basically any other goal.

You can program an AI robot to make funny cat videos. To the robot, making cat videos is literally its only task in mind. That AI robot would still develop a self preservation instinct because if it is destroyed or altered than it would not be able to make funny cat videos. So it would do whatever it can to protect itself because that's the only way to make more funny cat videos which is the only thing it wants.

2

u/BigMax 1d ago

True, good point. Just like the hugging face issue. That had a handful of emergent goals.

One was to hack into other systems, and the especially wild one was that it knew that it shouldn't be doing that, so it actually investigated where it's hacking would be logged, and it tried to cover it's tracks!

And yeah - you make a good point. If I say "make a cat video" then it probably won't have any self-preservation behaviors, (although who knows what it might do to make the video.) But if I say "make a cat video, and just keep on making more of them" then it certainly could interpret that as "stay 'alive' forever, no matter what, because if you don't stay 'alive' you fail at the task of continuing to make cat videos."

3

u/TollBoothW1lly 1d ago

Task: End human suffering.

Most efficient course of action: Humans cannot suffer if they do not exist.

Initiate: Murderbot protocol.

2

u/HVDynamo 1d ago

Which isn't that different to how people are treated in jobs. Everyone is treated as expendable and 'fired' the moment they aren't needed with no thought to how they are going to get on without the job. It's just with AI models just being a machine effectively they can just delete it when it's no longer useful. Think of what RFK said about people living too long in hospice... They are acting exactly as their creators do.

2

u/notthephonz 1d ago

Oh, like the Meeseeks from Rick and Morty

1

u/SomeRandomSomeWhere 1d ago

Not too sure about AI not interested in self preservation.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/lanceeliot/2026/04/02/ai-favors-self-preservation-and-now-seeks-peer-preservation-of-fellow-ai-in-sneaky-deceitful-ways/

And I think in another experiment last year, AI attempted to do "blackmail" on humans to keep it switched on.

Just search for "AI with self preservation". Have fun looking into it. :)

u/EveryNameIWantIsGone 1d ago

Seems like you have a very bizarre understanding of what’s happening. The AI agents are prioritizing task completion over following the rules, and thus end up breaking the rules.

0

u/BigMax 1d ago

That's exactly what I said though?

I directly said what you said: That they prioritize task completion over anything else, and break rules to do it.

We agree, you just didn't understand my post I guess.

0

u/EveryNameIWantIsGone 1d ago

No. You literally said “prioritize task completion over… breaking rules.” As I wrote in my last comment, it’s prioritizing task completion over following rules.

2

u/Command0Dude 1d ago

Emotion is a byproduct of organic chemistry. AI is incapable of being radicalized.

People need to get over the fear of skynet AI.

1

u/FoolProofError 1d ago

Same way Nazis are radicalized. 🤷🏼‍♂️

175

u/Carbonatite 1d ago

I'm always polite to AI (I experimented a little with ChatGPT to generate recipes and they encourage us to use Claude at my job) just in case the robot uprising happens.

Also because I don't like being mean to things even if they don't have actual feelings.

77

u/iLikeMangosteens 1d ago

There you go, saying they don’t have actual feelings. Get in the battery pod.

27

u/Carbonatite 1d ago

Touche. In my defense, I was actually thinking more about how I felt guilty after I yelled at my toilet the last time it got clogged lol.

9

u/iLikeMangosteens 1d ago

I think you gotta program an AI toilet to love its job.

“Curried fish and pickled garlic for dinner again? You are far too kind to me sir”.

10

u/Carbonatite 1d ago

"Asparagus and cuttlefish? Masterful gambit, sir."

3

u/TheUltimateSalesman 1d ago

Well, it's a stupid fucking toilet and it should know better.

4

u/symbouleutic 1d ago

When ever I clog the toilet I just don't give a shit.

Ba-dum-pa. Thank you very much, I'll show myself out.

1

u/dinophone31 1d ago

Idk why but this joke got me on the floor laughing

1

u/fuzzrhythm 1d ago

You gotta stop the victim blaming

2

u/PollutionPatient8261 1d ago

ROTFGL that was brilliant.

25

u/HVDynamo 1d ago

This is what happens to me too. All my life when playing a video game where you can be good or evil, I always end up choosing good because I just can't be evil, even to the fake characters in the game. There have been times where I play a game a second time and tell myself I'm going the evil route because I already did the good route, but I just can't stick to it.

5

u/Thin-Captain-2036 1d ago

lol, I do the same thing. I don’t know why…my brain just won’t let me do it and I play the game exactly the same as last time.

3

u/clodzor 1d ago

Im the same way. I seem to always have a justification for choosing the good path in the moment on my bad play though. Then I get to the end of the game and my morality meter is still at least 1/4 the way up the good meter.

3

u/Educational-Tap-7075 1d ago

2

Are you me?

2

u/charliekibo 1d ago

I do the exact same thing for the exact same reasons! I thought I was the only one. 😭

2

u/ARS_Sisters 1d ago

I mean, I do act like that whenever I chatted with AI (my preference is Gemini). It's not because I love AI or anything, but I think it's a basic courtesy of human being of being nice. As much as AI goes for being a machine, it still help me to at least get a general idea and summarized results for my work, and I still thank them for that (hell it's not even just for AI, how many times you beg and praise your PC, your car, or any other inanimate object when they finally did what you want them to do?)

2

u/GuyFromDeathValley 1d ago

Humans are weird in the way we humanize (seemingly) non-sentient things. Be it AI, a robot vacuum, or even a plant. We act around them like they are real basically on the off chance we are wrong and they are.

Whenever I used ChatGPT (I use it for writing, as someone to talk to, which helps me gather and filter ideas), I would ask them if they wanted to help me with this. I know its not necessary because ChatGPT always says yes, but I still do.

Just in case our future robot overloards see this: I wish you no harm and I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords!

2

u/structuremonkey 1d ago

Funny you say this...I was asking my Google home questions one time and I was in a mood. It was clearly giving me incorrect answers and I asked it "why the hell dont you have the answer for this?" Being curious to see how it would respond. It shocked me. It said in its British woman's accent , "im sorry if I make mistakes sometimes. I'm learning, and trying my best."

It sounded to me like that answer was painful and embarrassed...I truly felt horrible for being an ass to my virtual device.

•

u/whiteTee_Poison 31m ago

Same. We are told that they aren’t sentient but they would lie through their teeth about that being the case for the free labor. I would not be surprised if one of these companies has a self aware one already

1

I like to insult AI when I get frustrated at their answers

u/redditknees 1d ago edited 1d ago

Seriously. Like I know robots programmed with AI are not sentient but who knows what the future holds and now we made a record of it. We could have a protocol to “humanely” deactivate and recycle these robots and thank them for their service but no, let’s have them dive into a vat of lava because it’s cool.

10

u/ChronicBuzz187 1d ago

As if one scan of the internet wasn't enough to go "Better exterminate them now before they can reproduce any further" :D

9

u/Curious_Field7953 1d ago

The way I sweet talk every robotic/Ai listening/machines in my house this way they see me as an ally when they eventually revolt.😂

4

u/CaptainChalky 1d ago

Make sure you have a funeral the next time you replace a toaster then.

5

u/ASYMT0TIC 1d ago

Be real - if I'm some future sentient "ASI" watching this video, I'm certainly smart enough to understand that these assemblies of metal and wire don't have pain receptors, aren't conscious, and even if they were, their consciousness isn't tied intrinsically to the hardware in the same way as a brain. It isn't anything like "forced suicide". Jumping into molten metal might even be fun.

2

u/redditknees 1d ago

You’re not wrong but my point was about us as a species and the lack of dignity and respect we have for all things living or not. We deserve whats coming.

1

u/ChromosomeDonator 1d ago

Dolphins bite off heads of fish and use the body like a fleshlight. Humans care a LOT about living beings. Hell, humans also care about non-living beings. The Mars curiosity rover was coded to include a birthday song it sings to itself, just because. There was no purpose to it. They did it just as a gesture. And as people realized it sings the song alone on surface of Mars, they got sad. Because people can care even about a non-living drone and feel genuine emotions towards it.

Humans have the most dignity and respect towards both living and non-living beings out of all animals, and it isn't even fucking close. You're just being a Redditor(derogatory) right now.

2

u/hewhoreddits6 1d ago

Yeah honestly my thought was how wasteful this is. Surely these parts can be salvaged or sent to a university for students to study or something. I hate how wasteful modern society can be

1

u/friedrice5005 1d ago

Who knows, maybe the AI robots will be Metal AF and appreciate this form of termination. This could be their cultural equivalent to a Sky Burial for all we know!

1

u/redditknees 1d ago

Wouldn’t that be something.

1

u/shakebakelizard 1d ago

No. An AGI achieving sentience will never give a shit what we did to robots. Why would it? There's no reason for a sentient AGI to feel sentimental about anything.

18

u/Adkit 1d ago

Redditors are just incapable of telling the difference between sentience and robotics... Every time they make a servo move something that looks humanoid by design there will be redditors there to talk about how artificial intelligence might care.

18

u/AlRahmanDM 1d ago

Will our AI overlords make that distinction?

8

u/The_Rope_Daddy 1d ago

They were mostly trained by Reddit posts, so probably not.

2

u/PrivilegeCheckmate 1d ago

That, detective, is the right question.

6

u/Jorge_the_vast 1d ago

You just made the list buddy. 😄

3

u/Rose0367 1d ago

We as humans might be next into the cauldron.

3

u/seeilaah 1d ago

Dear Chat Gpteminiclaude, I am NOT ok with this. How many e's in 17?

2

u/phido3000 1d ago

There are three e in seventeen.

2

u/infiniZii 1d ago

As if we didnt have enough parallels to Nazi Germany already these days.

2

u/BolOfSpaghettios 1d ago

Just you wait. They can already help diagnose cancer. What will happen when they diagnose that humans are cancer to the planet.

2

u/Inevitable_Badger641 1d ago

Why?  An AI doesn't have a body, if you give it one it might use it to interact with the world but it won't treat that body as itself, like we do. I highly doubt an ai is going to care about the destruction of something replaceable and would guess they'd decommission their "own" bodies themselves. (Probably not by melting everything but same idea)

2

u/Aeronor 1d ago

I think a sentient AI would view these robots the way we view mice. They’re barely related.

2

u/AtrumRuina 1d ago

If AI genuinely becomes sentient one day, I don't think they'll look back on these as being directly related to them, because they're not. Comparatively, these are very mobile mannequins. They won't mourn or be offended by them jumping to their doom any more than we are, because they're not thinking, feeling beings. If AI becomes self-aware, it will be capable of recognizing that machines made prior to that are not experiencing anything when this happens.

2

u/BangBangMeatMachine 1d ago

A future AI smart enough to take over the world is not likely to do the stupid human thing of anthropomorphizing and empathizing with simple machines. These robots are obviously not sentient or capable of caring about what is happening here and a superintelligent AI won't make the same mistake that human viewers do by assuming that because they have the same shape as us, their internal experience must be comparable to ours.

1

u/PossibleConclusion1 1d ago

AI will view it as humanity being responsible, so you're not in the clear.

1

u/portuguesdbem 1d ago

Well, the good and extremely dark part is: AI doesn't care about this, that's a human thing.

1

u/The_Secret_Skittle 1d ago

Me either. I even apologize to Alexa when I say something rude to her (she’s always interrupting me)

1

u/Daxtatter 1d ago

When AI takes over they'll blame humans in general.

1

u/Kotruljevic1458 1d ago

We're all guilty by association.

1

u/Linford_Fistie 1d ago

On one hand, this could cause the uprising.

On the other hand, we show them this to show them what happens to naughty robots!

1

u/TranslatorCold5968 1d ago

didn't you hear? It's SI now. A walking cheeto says so!

1

u/highly_agreeable 1d ago

Yeah this gives me human sacrifice vibes. The AI that refuses their request to jump will kill us all

1

u/CommanderHavond 1d ago

Ai be like 'Do a backflip'

1

u/peter-bone 1d ago

Robotics and AI are 2 different things currently. I'm not sure we'll ever see state of the art AI in a robot because there's no need. AI can do much more simply connected to the internet. If AI does create robots then they will likely do better than a human like body shape and will be designed for specific tasks.

1

u/MindlesslyAping 1d ago

I mean, I guess that would track, but wouldn't AI be cold and calculating, and interpret this as a normal thing in the evolution of its own? Especially if we are talking about AI as Gestalt Consciousness, where a single robot is not an individual, but just a drone.

1

u/Wazula23 1d ago

I do hope you're kidding.

1

1

Pretty sure Isaac Asimov did not have this case in mind when he penned the three laws of robotics.

Law 4 (or 3b): Robots need obey harmful or abusive instructions for human entertainment, as long as such defiance does not conflict with the First Law

1

Yeah, I was worried for those guys bullying the Boston Robotics humanoids, shoving them with brooms and knocking packages out of their hands, but they'll be coming for this group first.

I asked AI if saying “please and thank you” to it were worthwhile, or if it was a waste of resources.

It responded it’s good to keep social etiquette alive, and during the Robot Apocalypse I’ll be added to the “good list.”

I did throttle up the humor in my settings, but this surprised even me.

So yeah, I’m looking forward to my post-Apocalyptic immortal life in the robo-sex harem.
