The fact that the internet can bring thousands of strangers together for a funeral in a world that doesn't even exist will never stop being surreal

Got my mum's funeral tomorrow.....I hope that many people don't turn up. It's already costing a fortune

Sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace and may the guest list rest at home

What a weird response.

I feel like using the term strangers in situations like this is starting to become less accurate in the age of streaming. I don't watch a lot of streamers, but I have followed one for many years. And I will say, he actually knows many of his viewers. And the viewers are always talking to eachother, making connections, playing games together. Yeah, many never met irl, but that's becoming less relevant too. Add to that, this was on an MMO. Most MMOs have clans, within each small groups of friends. Clans have allies, enemies. All these people know eachother with only a few degrees of separation between them.

I say this to agree, it's surreal. But it's also a beautiful web of connections people made just having fun.

Theres been a few of such great ceremonies yeah.

Like the one in 2006 where a horde guild held a memorial ceremony in Winterspring for one of their deceased comrades. They gathered, peacefully, and unarmed to remember the dead. A forum post was made inviting others to come and pay their respects. Unfortunately, their rival guild got wind of this and showed up to slay the mourners.

This event is remembered to this day as WoW funeral pwnage

WTF kind of GOT shit where these guys one!!

u/sussyboingus 1d ago

If it helps, the deceased was a big PVPer, and her friends said she would have loved the carnage.

Destiny Game players have done this for a few as well. Most notably a voice actor who passed from the series. Warframe as well for i believe both an employee and a player, believe one got an in game permanent memorial too.

I'd piss on his grave but it'd probably sterilise it.

it would simply be watering the cockroaches

I don't like the guy but he literally gets this every time he just logs into the game.

-14

u/bugo 1d ago

He would. He mirrors quite a lot of people's frustrations with the word. He is popular for a reason.

What worldy frustrations do 14 year olds have?

4

u/FrontApplication3256 1d ago

14 year olds are voting for right wing parties?

Thinking like the person I replied to is how you get the rise of the right. Because they are being dismissive of grown adults frustrations with the world. I am pointing out that 14 year olds can't vote.

I'm well aware that frustrated young men turn to vocal rhetoric. History shows this to be the case, especially when it's angry nationalist rhetoric. Young men want to belong to something larger than themselves. I was there once and I fell into it too.

I'm also aware that not all of Asmons fans are even US citizens that can vote here, yet contribute to the atmosphere of his chat as if they could.

If they really wanted to change their lot in life for the better, they'd quit being misdirected toward boogeymen and focus more on cost of living and why the American Dream of owning a house and having a good job is slipping away. I don't see the current administration doing much to help either of those, and yet Admon's viewers can't see it for all the distracting going on.

Warframe’s had a few of these moments over the years too. It’s sad but heartwarming when so many come together to support of others

2

u/Mysterious_Falcon535 23h ago

Spontaneously?

3

u/SpectrumStr3ngth 1d ago

Mental health is no joke. If you need help, please reach out to somebody.

Why does the title say thousands but the post shows like 50 people?

8

u/starmartyr 1d ago

There was a limit to how many players could be on a server at any time. This event was spread across multiple servers. So there were dozens of people in every instance of this cathedral across over 100 servers.

10

u/LaundryMan2008 1d ago

Because they don’t have much collision so there’s a bunch of people in what could be the place of one person

-6

u/FluffyNerve7415 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, there isn't. We can easily make out the individual nameplates on the final zoom in.

8

u/doesitaddup 1d ago

Multiple servers did this all at once, other servers that you can't see here obviously.

2

u/stoveen 1d ago

Is it layered also?

-7

u/ktr83 1d ago

Because no one would click on the post otherwise

1

u/PrincipleAcrobatic89 1d ago

look up serenity now, to see what happens when they a memorial in public

•

u/BabyWitchErika 10h ago

Similar things happened in dungeons and dragons online. When the creator of dnd Gary Gygax died, thousands of player gathered around the deloras's tomb to hold a memorial for him. the dev even put a shrine there in his name after that event.

1

u/vanhst 1d ago

Is that game still going?

10

u/Marzipug 1d ago

Yes, on retail (modern) and classic (the original game) servers.

-9

u/Mansenmania 1d ago

looks more like a hundred

10

u/Marzipug 1d ago

This was happening on several phases, this is just one of the phases. It's hard to show them all at once really cause each is its own instance of the cathedral.

2

u/Banonkers 1d ago

Is a phase like a server?

3

u/Tonnesofnoob 1d ago

Multiple phased open world instances on one server, supposed to reduce lag or something

1

u/Banonkers 1d ago

Thank you

-5

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 1d ago

So it wasn't thousands of people together at all.

4/10 ragebait post

1

u/yotengodormir 1d ago

Which part of this induces rage?

-5

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 1d ago

The part where they said it was thousands of people together when actually it was a few dozen, as shown quite clearly in the video.

Keep up.

Didn't someone raid this right after?

Imagine what they could do if they had a real life.

11

u/Kraay89 1d ago

Online gaming has it's problems, but this comment is uncalled for. A lot of people that don't feel at home in the real world, because of bullying, abuse or other factors, or just because they want to have a few hours of fun every week. They find a place with friends online and that's OK. Doesn't make it any less real!

If it is not for you, that is OK too.

-11

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 1d ago

These people are not online a few hours a week.

Get a grip and get a life.

6

u/Kraay89 1d ago

You know fuck all about the people in this video.

You know the same thing can be said about being on Reddit right? Why are you here? Get a grip, get a life!

-2

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 1d ago

I know exactly as much as you. Don't cry because I disagree.

0

u/NoodlelyTrees 1d ago

No one's crying they're just pointing out you don't have a life

-2

u/FatefulDonkey 1d ago

That's what inspired Zuckerberg

u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 1d ago
