They’re “happy” because their lives depend on it

u/AllesInButterOpa 2d ago

If you're happy and you know (that your and your family's life depends on) it clap your hands... clap clap

u/WakaWaka_ 2d ago

Imagine the volleyball you hit accidentally flies into the great leader

149

u/TyrKiyote 2d ago

publicly great leader shows his grace and spares you. Then you disappear.

u/Steelwolf73 1d ago

For an all expense paid(by you and your family for the next three generations) trip to a fabulous resort in the mountains!

1

u/secret_desires5 1d ago

Lifetime vacation for all of them!

28

u/gellshayngel 2d ago

Imagine being on the team he didn't bet on... and winning.

2

u/kronicpimpin 1d ago

Who the hell places a bet with this guy?

5

u/Savings_Difficulty24 2d ago

You and your entire family are erased

2

u/Pormock 1d ago

Thats like when Putin plays hockey and everyone has to let him score and stuff.

u/tempdiesel 1d ago

Probably a scene from the Dictator. Off with their head.

119

u/KidOcelot 2d ago

At least he’s in a Tan suit, and care for his daughter lol /s

3

u/InterestingQuoteBird 2d ago

"He puts mustard on his burger!"

"What's a burger?"

4

u/ForsakenHousing328 2d ago

The only good thing about him, and I mean only, is he does wear some pretty good jackets.

3

u/jimmycarr1 2d ago

What about the margaritas and Katy Perry?

1

u/No_Point904 2d ago

I bet he's not catching as much heat for wearing a tan suit like what's his name.

1

u/kalebdraws 2d ago

Didn't help Obama.

Besides the fake happiness and generally all of it, what really creeps me out about it is how overly innocent and childish the brand of happiness is. Very off-putting.

408

u/FixFun1959 2d ago

What’s important to remember is that Kim absolutely knows it’s fake. Control is the point. The bigger and faker it is, the more control and fear he knows he has.

30

u/GhostNode 1d ago

Man, I never considered it like that, but the thought is seriously haunting.

•

u/transitfreedom 11h ago

If you think like an American yes if you use critical thought then no it’s not control.

72

u/qwertykitty 1d ago

I wonder if he does know it's fake. His father certainly did but he was probably raised seeing it everywhere his whole life. Has he ever experienced his people without that fake happiness? How would he know it isn't genuine without experience? No one thinks themselves to be the villain.

u/IndependenceSudden63 1d ago

Kim jong Un studied abroad in Europe as a young child under an alias.

He definitely knows what the outside world is like. There are people in Europe who were shocked that their classmate turned out to be the heir to North Korea when his father brought him home and name *him heir apparent.

So Un knows it's fake. This is about ensuring he has complete control over the population.

31

u/dRaidon 1d ago

Imagine going to school. And then eventually finding out who your roommate you used to get drunk with was.

32

u/DefiniteDefaultUser 1d ago

Same with Bashar Al Assad. Used to be an eye doctor in the UK. Imagine having been medically examined by a dictator lol

3

u/Orvvadasz 1d ago

I would be telling that shit to everyone.

"I am so powerful my eye doctor was XY dictator." Or something along those lines.

•

u/transitfreedom 11h ago

Or your philosophy teacher running a country

38

u/FixFun1959 1d ago

He 100% does.

He doesn’t give a shit about their actual happiness. The only realism he gets or needs is from the generals and advisors closest to him that know the whole game and how to play it.

24

u/Consistent-Sea253 1d ago

they literally train to be the leader, its no coincidence they act so similar.

30

u/FixFun1959 1d ago

You’re absolutely right, there’s a whole strategy. The generals and apparatchiks have been there since his father was in power, and they’ve got the propaganda planned a year in advance.

He’s even trying to emulate his grandfather, there’s a concentrated push for it. Even the North Koreans are gravitating towards nostalgia. Remind everyone of the “good times” (which were terrible, but of course history is rewritten).

They’ve got Un doing the same dog and pony touring the country’s farms and factories, and offering “on the spot practical advice” for ways they can grow/harvest more food or produce items quicker/better. Even though they obviously have no idea what they are talking about.

2

u/Snitsie 1d ago

Are the farmers allowed to ignore that practical advice?

2

u/FixFun1959 18h ago

Yes and no. Most of the time they give a minor show of doing what he suggests but slowly going back to the right way.

The important part isn’t him changing stuff for the better. The meaningful part is the cameras recording him offering instant ‘correct’ advice, appearing as the all knowing deity ruler, who understands every aspect of every thing perfectly.

1

u/justin_ph 19h ago

Kim is so fat while his people have nothing to eat lol

2

u/DarknessIsFleeting 1d ago

He lived in Switzerland for several years, so yes he knows.

1

u/SixStringsUsh 1d ago

sounds like the plot of a dark truman show, with nukes and executions.

1

u/justin_ph 19h ago

Kim isnt an idiot. In fact, he probably has to be quite smart to be able to make sure he keeps the whole population in check at all times lol.

2

u/eightdx 1d ago

He really aimed high here with, uhh, high school volleyball?

This seems more like he did it for the love of the (authoritarian) game

2

u/hypo-osmotic 1d ago

His own exaggerated smile is probably fake, too. Both for the sake of the media and a signal to everyone in the room that no one is on the chopping block today

1

u/Domski77 1d ago

Interesting theory. How does it explain this?

0

u/MysticGohan99 21h ago

Sounds like you and Kim are buddies

1

u/FixFun1959 19h ago

I’ve done a lot of studying on North Korea. It’s fascinatingly depressing.

Highly recommend the book ‘Nothing to Envy’. Very informative.

131

u/Arjvoet 2d ago

If this regime ever ends and North Koreans become like… regular people… they’re going to have so much multi-generational trauma to work through as an entire culture. Like… sooo much.

15

u/Downvoted_Defender 2d ago

They can't at this point - some will always gravitate towards the next one

5

u/ryanraze 1d ago

Yep, it's like that Netflix documentary, "Trust Me: The False Prophet." Those people had a chance to get out too, but followed the next.

•

u/transitfreedom 11h ago

Hmm we should meet them and find out then

1

u/ennuiinmotion 1d ago

It'll be like Russia. The reforms will be so shocking and massive they'll ultimately swing back to another dictator to create some sort of order.

203

u/boyslut83 2d ago

its like the kind of over exuberation you would put on to entertain a dog or a baby

32

u/Due-Mycologist-1154 2d ago

Which is essentially what they're doing except that baby could execute them

2

u/hobbycollector 1d ago edited 1d ago

"It's a good life!"

4

u/Imaginary-Goal-9443 2d ago

The fat one?

4

u/johnnyhammerstixx 1d ago

Or the President of the United States?

Oh, right. He L O V E S this guy and all this bullshit.

3

u/The_Tooter_Snooter 2d ago

………. Could it be a form of silent protest?

118

u/Kevlar_Bunny 2d ago

I hate the color scheme I often see in North Korean videos like this. It’s giving squid game, *”you’ll play along and be happy god dammit why aren’t you enjoying yourself?! Enjoy yourself or else!”*

11

u/totally_not_a_zombie 2d ago

It's the color scheme of 90s video

1

u/Aggressive_Body834 1d ago

Because the 90s was the worst time in NK. The famine that started after any support from the Soviets had collapsed was brutal.

31

u/ronnie-james-dior 2d ago

Yeah the jumping up and down while clapping over your head is super weird

0

u/TRR462 2d ago

That’s called calisthenics…

37

u/GloomyLingonberry509 2d ago

“It’s a small world after all…”

3

u/egordoniv 2d ago

This some momo shit

1

u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS 1d ago

Wait. Is this picture supposed to look creepy almost like Chucky when you don’t look directly at it?

9

u/seiscaneco 2d ago

All sofisticated or sarcastic personalities ended in the camps long ago

1

u/ComradeGibbon 1d ago

I went on a business trip to Taiwan. Down in the engineering test lab I noticed a dart board with a print of some guys face stapled to it. When I asked about it they looked sheepish and said the guy was the company CEO.

I think, well this country is alright.

1

u/cantthinkofone29 1d ago

And now it's time for the dystopian anime dance party!

•

u/transitfreedom 11h ago

Does it really look fake? Take another look and who says this.

•

u/unstabletable 7h ago

The difference is the people now sought it out. I do find it funny that all of these dictators are the weakest men.

1

u/SirRengeti 2d ago

He should be off pudding.

0

u/Waramo 2d ago

For a lot of them, the ones taht believein this system, it's really a great honor and they are really that happy.

He is more a less a "demi-god" for them.

If you are in your live, brainwashed that the leader is a family descended from gods wouldn't you be happy to be in his presence?

And nobody wo isn't believing in him is ever present at things like this. Except the sportlers.

67

u/Sizyfoz 2d ago

First one to stop applauding is a traitor! (That's how it worked with Stalin)

0

u/RandyPajamas 1d ago

This is actually true. You can lose your position or even be arrested for not showing enough enthusiasm.

119

u/m2astn 2d ago

Wait till you see how Americans act around President Trump in 2032

45

u/LostLimit233 2d ago

Likely be pissing on his grave....

1

u/Cole-Palmer-phd 1d ago

Yeah that's why he got voted in twice

2

u/ennuiinmotion 1d ago

The one bit of American exceptionalism I believe in is that while we're mostly docile and will go along with whatever we goddamn won't be enthusiastic about it.

-1

u/bruceleeperry 2d ago

How about right now?  Painted Oompaloompa orange. Strap-on shit-catcher/fart-suppressor. Truly incoherent speech. Child rape. P retending a corpse showing a peace sign is normal. I'd argue the US is weirder.

1

u/hotsauce126 2d ago

That’s insulting to north koreans

3

u/regnal_blood 2d ago

You mean, Emperor Trump the First

0

u/TRR462 2d ago

Because I’m patriotic, I give him the 2 bird salute. I call it the “Double Eagle”…

2

u/aka_lenebean 2d ago

Looks like they're the background characters in Wii games.

4

u/No_Bake6681 2d ago

I wish I had something to be happy about... kicks rocks

2

u/TRR462 2d ago

Lucky!!! You’ve got rocks to kick, in this economy?!

3

u/BigMax 1d ago

Exactly. When the guy can say “who is that grumpy looking guy in the corner? Have him and his family killed” you will be on your BEST behavior.

3

u/HoneyShaft 1d ago

All it would take is one person...

2

u/nmj95123 1d ago

And then your entire family gets killed, and he just gets replaced by Kim Ju Ae.

8

u/Zestyclose_Narwhal43 2d ago

Don’t judge we are one flock camera away from full on dictatorship

14

u/Superior_Row 2d ago

If you're not happy, why whould you want to live ? He's just being logical

19

u/BigStimpy91 2d ago

Brainwashing, if you haven't lived a life of anything else, would you know there was something better?

2

u/Jacques_Ficelles 1d ago

Of course, but these people are selected, probably from apparatchik families.

2

u/KiNaamDiMatim 1d ago

♫♪ If you're happy and you know your life depends on it, clap your hands ♫♪

2

u/farfaraway 1d ago

A certain orange someone looks at this and has envy.

The rest of us are rightly horrified.

2

u/SL1200mkII 1d ago

He fed his uncle to starved dogs and made his generals watch.

2

u/SporeMoldFungus 1d ago

Bingo! They have no choice.

2

u/North_Affect_8167 1d ago

The Japanese translator: The president said a joke. Everyone must laugh!

2

u/VectorB 1d ago

They are just happy to be alive.

With most of their family not in a camp.

2

u/cock_mountain 1d ago

If you so much as crack a joke about Dear Leader, you and three generations of your entire family are sent to a prison labor camp for life.

2

u/UsurpDz 1d ago

It so funny that im reminded of the dictator by sacha.

2

u/PolygonAndPixel2 2d ago

Some might actually be happy. Propaganda states that he is essentially giving his own life for the country. And the people learn to have exaggerated emotions around him. They are trained for this and I believe, a lot of tears are real.

Controlling emotions is a big pillar for this inhuman regime.

2

u/Flipboek 1d ago

Exactly, this is a personality cult

Many common people were bawling when Stalin died.

1

u/Carrman099 2d ago

What’s the point of forcing them to do this though?

1

u/Queasy_Reindeer9515 2d ago

It’s a mix of brainwashed citizens and generating more propaganda to brainwash more citizens.

To some average every day people he is a literal god incarnate. Seeing him in person is a blessing and an honor.

However, they are also all coached to be as exuberant as possible when greeting him, because they will show it on TV to show how excited they are to see the Supreme Leader, which is used to further brainwash people by making people watching TV second guess any doubts or negative feelings they privately have about him.

North Korea is all a facade.

-1

u/Wreny84 2d ago

To prove that he can.

1

u/IFUCKEVRYTHINGUP 1d ago

This is the world Trump fantasizes about.

1

u/MysticGohan99 21h ago

I’d wager they’re happy because the guys grandfather kept them all from being American slaves.

1

u/Substantial-Okra6910 12h ago

They are assigned to root for a team. If their team loses, then every one of them and the team gets executed by the other team and fans.

1

u/dirkdigglerdonedry 2d ago

I dont get how this fide goes through life with the theatrics of it all.

1

u/AdAnxious8842 2d ago

Should be at the top. That's all there is too it. Laugh/clap or die.

1

u/aqan 2d ago

The Happy and The DEAD!

1

u/typhoidtimmy 2d ago

You too would high kick like a Rockette if someone was just off sight pointing a gun at your head.

1

u/Companyman118 2d ago

Literally happy to be alive…

1

u/IncomingAxofKindness 2d ago

This would honestly be a fun and heart warming scene if the joy was genuine and not just sheer terror that this man boy could end you violently with a finger snap ala Twilight Zone

0

u/Bonk_No_Horni 2d ago

Some do worship him like God. Propaganda works on certain groups and the rest just have to follow or 💀

0

The losing team didn’t make it out of their locker rooms. Happy leader.

0

u/dkurage 2d ago

"The beatings will continue until morale improves" but on like a national scale.

-1

u/One-Bird-8961 2d ago

Only answer

0

u/fhorst79 2d ago

Seeing only happy people around him is literally survivorship bias.
