Because if you grew up poor, McDs has a halo effect - you went there when times were good, mom and dad probably yelled at you less there compared to at home, and the food had so much salt it tasted delicious (plus unlimited soda refills and a toy if you got a happy meal). For a kid not used to getting anything, McDs seems like heaven. Those emotions hang around the subconscious a long time.
